Connacht Club Finals

(Oldest Posts First)

Haven't seen their opposition but what is the thinking on Corofin and Oughterard in their respective Connacht Club Finals?

Well done oughterard. I'd no plans so I decided to go support my distant neighbours. They are a serious outfit and will have zero issue fitting in our senior ranks

O Sullivan for oughterard was outstanding. He had one job and that was to mark the neales biggest threat and boy did he do it. Their could have been a streaker, a brawl or a bomb and he wouldn't have cared his eyes were locked on his man and he marked him out of the game. Cian Monaghan very impressive too. Controversial but I think if enda wasnt affected by nerves hed be the better free taker of the tierneys. When oughterard were ahead he took over many of the frees and he was knocking them over from every angle /distance imaginable. Matthew's very young so I hope his remains as calm under pressure as he is now. His confidence is his biggest asset

Went for a look last night. Great first half, very close at 0-7 each at ht. Oughterard took over in the second half. Matthew Tierney from what I've seen of him could be a great player...1-5 I think he scored last night. Oughterard well marshaled The Neales danger man Tommy Conroy. I feel the slow Neale kick outs meant their launchpad to get out of defense was slow and predictable which I had feared for them having seen them in the Mayo final.

Meanwhile in the junior final Kilamine were too powerful for St.Michaels of Sligo, a non contest.

I think it's Connacht vs Munster in the All Ireland semis, so Oughterard are very likely to be playing Templenoe. A serious task, given they have 4 Kerry seniors in their team.
Kerry clubs have a big advantage in intermediate and junior, since they have only 8 senior clubs. Their intermediate winners are very strong as a result. Kilcummin showed this in last year's All Ireland final.
Congrats to Oughterard and the best of luck in January.

Oughterard will likely meet Templenoe in the AI semi-final. Would be a tough game with Templenoe having 4 players I think on the Kerry panel.

If it's Templeloe most certainly it will be a tall order. But Oughterard look like a team that have thrown of the shackles and playing with little pressure which is testimony to the management. They look like a team that are extremely well prepared so who knows. Good luck to them anyway. Gaillimh Abu!

The very best of luck to Corofin in the Connacht Final and congrats to a great young Oughterard team on a fine win over The Neale. The Kerry champs will be very hard to beat but these Oughterard lads seem to keep raising the bar.

The thread title doesn't match the latest achievement, but it's definitely worth resurrecting to acknowledge Oughterard's fantastic achievement today.
Templenoe were unbackable favourites for this game, and not too many gave Oughterard a serious chance. I thought it would be a step too far, given their opponents had 4 Kerry seniors, but they tore up the script and deservedly won.
Kerry clubs have a massive advantage in this competition since they only have 8 senior clubs. Templenoe would be the equivalent of at least the 9th best club in Kerry this year.
I can only wish Oughterard the best of luck in the final and hope they become the second Galway club to take home the All-Ireland intermediate title.

Great achievement. Templenoe are technically the 10th best team in Kerry. Oughterard would be considered the 18th in Galway going by the championship!

Fair play to Oughterard, honest manager & a lot of very honest players, both on & off the field. Shows what happens when you have grounded, honest people who will bring people with them. They have succeeded where local clubs with ten times the resources & population have failed. Massive scalp, they can now go on & win it. A couple of very talented players that should be playing for Galway in the future.

Kerry have 8 senior clubs, so Templenoe would be 9th at worst. You could argue 8th as well, in place of Rathmore who got relegated from senior.
It's a phenomenal achievement from Oughterard, that shouldn't be underestimated.

I stand corrected! Just shows that Galway county have a wealth of talent. Hopefully P J can get the county to the next level. Kerry are obviously not ahead of us as in the pool of players available for the county set up. It is great to see a club make a break through. Even more so in a western club where the population ( like the rural clubs) is in decline.
