Agreed. Although down have a McGurk cup game so they must be straight on after that game, surely there's more than one pitch available that has lights in Belfast. Hurling shouldn't been played this time of the year and it will be absolutely freezing and with the weather today the pitch will be horrendous. It won't be a good game due to conditions and I doubt even anyone wants to play at this stage!

Can it not be played before the Antrim league in March or April

Should be played alongside the Antrim u21s they seem to be able to organise it well enough

Down county board could learn a thing or two from other counties most of these fellas been training from January need a break they'll be back at it in a few weeks. Hopefully stays dry for tonight what's wrong with Downpatrick for this game ??

Downpatrick pitch is closed AFAIK and who'd want 30 odd hurlers mollicking on their pitch in the middle of December. The competition is a joke and that's no offence to the lads that bust themselves in playing in it but there's nothing to be gained/learned/developed in playing at this time of year. Well done the high stoolers, they'll not be sober till black friday.. bricktop (Down) - Posts: 2479 - 13/12/2019 11:46:18 2254639 Link 0 |
Portaferry beat Ballycran with ease last night in Belfast, even when the lights went out it couldn't deter Portaferry in their goal to win the U21 championship. Well done to all concerned. swan song (None) - Posts: 451 - 13/12/2019 11:51:49 2254644 Link 0 |
Well done our lads. A good win in difficult conditions. Bad time of year for this competition alright but it would have been finished three weeks if it hadnt been for a Newry & Bredagh makin progress in Ulster plus a sad death in the parish. We have little to learn from Antrim with u21s. They try to play it off in a week in the middle of July holidays. The final wasne even played this year FFS ! You cant play it before the Antrim league as somebody suggested cause of NHL fixtures. Maybe the competition should be scrapped I don't know. The players do like it thou. Theres just no enough weekends in the year to get everything played when the sod is dry. Seannie Og (Down) - Posts: 947 - 13/12/2019 16:57:25 2254709 Link 0 |
True. it's good for the young fellas getting more championship time gives them but more experience for the younger ones coming through hopefully can help them progress

In fairness the pitch didn't look to bad for time o year Ports just had to much all over the park and upped their game from the first match Some nice scores aswell ianog (Down) - Posts: 415 - 13/12/2019 20:28:35 2254746 Link 0 |

Honestly portaferry far better team,we were limited on the bench, plus our senior championship players were invisable, our management also out of their depth at best, not good enough, dark days ahead crannumber2 (Down) - Posts: 334 - 14/12/2019 16:39:51 2254831 Link 0 |
Was young Savage playing for the crans the other night? If he was he didn't show any dominance , poor cran mid field. Young Smith was dominating over Martin, one for the future. CJ wasnt allowed to play. Ports forwards were very good and still had 15 wides. Young Kelly fept a good goal. Ports missed to many frees, but on the whole an acceptable and gratifying win for those young lads. swan song (None) - Posts: 451 - 15/12/2019 15:59:00 2254986 Link 0 |

Will be an eventful year, hopefully the crans can start to push on a few young fellas throughout the year and get a few up to standard. There are alot of men on our team who have families and have entered their 30's Ports will be some force too, but having so many on the county and so little I assume training, maybe they will fall behind. Galgets are a young squad with alot of potential, in my opinion they need their boys from Australia back Antrimroad (Down) - Posts: 93 - 18/12/2019 13:25:39 2255476 Link 0 |
