I don't understand why the Championship games arent played in Ballycran? Why can't they be played in Downpatrick even - is the RGU not are second ground? At least that would be closer for the majority of players instead of hiking the whole way to Newry. Perhaps the players like the Newry venue, is that the simple answer to this question? The whole thing is so confusing. Why are the NHL games played in Newry?

Probably a county board decision, with the management not questioning it so as not to rock the boat!!!

I say thats a fair comment about management long john but do the ards clubs form part of the county board do they not

I'm not sure about the county board set up. Maybe someone can clear that up. I'm thinking each club has a representative, so since there only 3 clubs in the ards, they would be out numbered in any decisions i would think.

L john thats correct but problem is ards clubs rarely go to meetings apparently so how can you influenece decisions if your not there . The rest of the county dont really care about hurley so would go along with any reasonable arguements they would suggest

The Ards clubs do go but they are shouted down by the football only brigade.

Ards clubs DO attend these meetings. But we only have one vote, and all footbal clubs generaly vote along with majority of others to keep games in Newry. County Board have long held the directive that all county games to be held in Newry as per directive from Croke Park, but I have it on authority that no such directive exists. They have been asked to show this letter, and it has never been seen! Only reason they are there is so as Down get grant allowance/ benefit for hosting duel code events at Pairc Esler.

Ballycran was listed as County Ground, and if not anymore it is County Board who removed it.

Wouldn't mind at all if hurling supporters treated same as football supporters, but last I heard not even shop opened during hurling matchs to serve tea to the 30 or so patrons who attended league matches in freezing cold during the winter. . Don't know where other reports of over 100 or so attending! Can't be for the gate money that they open it up for the hurling, so must be some form of grant etc from Croke Park.

I suppose that is a valid point. Maybe the ards clubs need to make sure they attend and send representatives who aren't afraid to raise their arguements.

I didnt know ballycran was delisted what were the reasons for that does anyone actually know. It is wrong to say they attend co board meetings that implies attendence by all clubs all the time and thats unlikely. Some attend on a reg basis some never and some hit the minimum threshold to guarentee there ticket in september. Football clubs are not concerned with hurling the same way hurley clubs cudnt care less about football that just the way it is - anyway good luck to dule and the lads in crossmaglen this weekend

It's a joke that the games are not played in the Ards. It's even more of a joke that we play our home games in Newry due to some grant allowance. If we had have had the Kerry game in the Ards we probably would have won, the extra distance for Kerry to travel plus more of a home field advantage might have pulled us over the line. Newry = Neutral Venue in Down Hurling Terms & Not Home. I will be in St Oliver Plunkett Park tomorrow cheering on Dule and the lads hoping they progress to the 1/4 final. Up Down. Also Crossmaglen is a lot closer to the nucleus of Armagh hurling than the Athletic Grounds, again forward thinking by Armagh county board something Down are short sighted about.

Who cares where we play. The venue should be no excuse. Correct me if I'm wrong but I think Newry is the best playing surface in Down for Hurlen? Good luck against Armagh this weekend which will be a tough game. Glad to see Monan not taking the Orchard Men lightly. They are a fit, physical and a very organized outfit. Is the Portaferry fella McGrattan still on the Armagh panel?

Good win for the county today. Well done to all. I think this team wont be that far away in the Christy Ring. Hope they get a bit more backing.

Great result and glad to see that they didn't show any complacency as Armagh aren't a bad side. Hope we avoid Derry in the 1/4 final, they are always are boggie team.

How'd the team play? Whos playing well and do you think they can progress?
I think the boys can beat all the teams, hopefully if they can get through to the final, they could beat Kerry!

Good luck to all on Saturday against Derry. You deserve to win having been very unlucky against Kerry and playing well against Armagh. Best wishes to Management and players. Just make sure you start well and open up a gap! Hopefully you will have good support.
