Your apparent surprise that there are no longer any FG players on the Warwickshire team is surprising in itself. Whether Warwickshire sought permission to play them this year or go with what it has within the County was a decision it had to take. It presumably considered the medium and longer term future of the County team and not just the next few months. You have to accept and respect the decision it took. Good luck to all of the FG players and particularly those who represented Warwickshire, but things move on and changes occur. On a slightly different point: Once the Provincial Council had amended the club championship this was always on the cards. The Warwickshire Hurling Championship has been undermined and some of the clubs competing in it decided to drop out. Even in the dark days of the late 1980's Warwickshire kept its hurling championship going, even when it was down to a couple of teams, the County team couldn't buy a win, its clubs were being well beaten by their London & Herts counterparts and then with the Gloucs, Lancs & Herts championships folding. To see one of its competitions treated like this by the Provincial Council asks a few questions of the value placed on it at Provincial level, but hey ho............................FG and JM are replacing 140 mile round trips (Birmingham/Manchester) with journeys to London to play in the Provincial Cup, which will obviously be their priority....................that will encourage young local lads to take up the game??!?!! The real promotion of hurling in the rest of Britain will mainly be done by the other clubs (such as RC, SB, EGB in Warwickshire) where novices will get a chance to play matches and learn the game without getting taken to the cleaners (I appreciate JM's record of local born players but they will have to opt for tried & proven for FG or London games)................and their reward? patrick (UK) - Posts: 52 - 28/03/2014 10:54:33 1566101 Link 0 |
