Fermanagh Senior Football Manager

Seems a good choice but he will need a good backroom support. The Marty McGrath suggestion as selector would be a good idea as he would have intimate knowledge of the ability of players in the county and probably best placed to be able to advise Pete. The problem Canavan had and his selector was they knew little about the players and it took them a while to get to know them but anyway they had the first class experience Pete McGrath has of intercounty football. The only thing worries me is the cost as the Fermangh Co Board haven't been great at fundraising. But anyway good luck to Pete and whoever he chooses to help him because Fermanagh needs a boost and of course their first Ulster title!!!

According to the Belfast Telegraph it has been revealed that

Pete McGrath was contacted about the vacant manager's post only on Monday and after a brief period of consideration met with county board officials on Wednesday night

Given the timescale, McGrath has yet to put in place a backroom team, but he expects to have this in solved within a week.

"It will take the next four or five days to set in place the full management team. That will be done in due course," he added.

In a twist of fate, McGrath had been an independent overseer of the process that saw Tyrone legend Peter Canavan interviewed and appointed in 2011.

It was revealed at the county board meeting that 14 candidates had been approached and four interviewed.

Interestingly, Marty McGrath's name is been banded about only in that last two days so the new manager must have an interest.

Why did the county board say that the say they that the decision was imminent last weekend and then let this 'manager elect' down by then this week approaching and appointing someone else? It's not a nice way to do appointments.

Pete Mc Grath...a decent appointment given the recent doom and names that had been mooted for the post...it will be interesting to see who the backroom team will be,hope its a strong one as every role within a county squad is vital, selectors, trainers!!

Was about time the county board selected as teams have already started training for 2014,hopefully this appointment will excite and motivate all the best players available to the county team to get involved and give 100% commitment for the next few years.

The county board yet again showed lack of respect to other candidates in the handling of this process. Anyone know the identities of all interviewed candidates bar GM??

macca999 is typical of those who sit-on-the-fence until they see which way the opinion is going before jumping. His delay in supporting the appointment of a first class manager is disappointing as is his swipe at the county board about the appointment procedure. The committee were acting in the best interests of Fermanagh football and that's what the people of the county would want them to do.

The appointment of the Down man will, I believe, will put Fermanagh on a winning course that Cansavan unfortunately couldn't do or was limited in success due to inexperience.

I would support calls for the inclusion of Marty McGrath in the backroom staff as he comes with valuable knowledge of the abilities and personalities of the players in the county so therefore would be a great asset in any incoming manager.

I wish all concerned in the new management the best of luck.

macca...apparently the four that were interviewed were Gerry Moane, Peter McGinnity, Michael McDermott and Pete McGrath...it appears that McGinnity was choice prior to McGrath emergence...lastly, good to see you came of that fence!

I agree with macca999 that Pete McGrath is a decent appointment given the recent player retirements and names that had been talked for the post...it will be of interest to see who the backroom boys will be as every role within a county squad is essential.

It's about time the co board selected as teams have already started training for 2014 and I this appointment will motivate all the best players available and that they give 100% commitment.

The co board once again demonstrated a lack of respect to other candidates in the handling of this process.
