Championship 2019

Looking bad for Darren Hughes unfortunately, reported in the Irish Times as a broken ankle which will put his participation in serious doubt for more than the Ulster championship. It's a real shame for him, he gives a huge amount to the team.

I can't really see Niall Kearns playing at all this year so midfield is going to be a struggle. Poor enough of the management not to have at least given thought to a few more options here. If Fintan Kelly is suspended for the Cavan game it'll be a struggle. Kieran Hughes if he's fit has to be an option because Cavan will have 2 big men in there and will try to dominate, slow the game down, frustrate Monaghan and turn the screw as per usual. It's going to be an even tougher game for Monaghan than it would normally be.

Seems to be confirmed in media this morning he is out with broken ankle. Best wishes to him in his recovery owes Monaghan nothing massive loss. Kieran Hughes hopefully be back for breffini as will be needed round the middle now.

Let me guess you would have your own club man dick clerkin on ahead of him on Monaghans best 15 over the last 20 years.. I think I know who 99.99% of people would pick......"
No I would not pick my own club man. Darren is more skillfull. So you think you speak for 99.9% of people- doubt it

We need Kieran Hughes now more than ever, let's hope he steps up in his brothers absence and does a job in midfield for us.

Since I have posted maybe 6 times in total you could hardly say I'd be posting a different update every day. As for being a know all you're entitled to your opinion, but as I said on half a dozen posts you could hardly know.
My original point was against the perceived disrespect I saw towards Darren, which I felt I was entitled to call out since I was actually at the game and saw him stretchered off. If that's being a know all so be it that's what I must be.
Since mick clarified his comment and what his point was I would have thought that was the matter closed.
But I will always oppose people disrespecting any of our county players regardless of their club or how they are playing..... they give up a lot for not much reward so a bit of respect isn't that much to expect

So without Niall and the 2 Hughes things not looking good. But still believe there is more than enough in that team to take us back to super 8's. Bit of rest will do Darren good and hope he has a speedy recovery.

Hardly resting with a broken ankle. However he did require a rest previously. Playing him in Jan in the McKenna Cup after all the years going flat with with club and county was crazy. Body can only take so much.

Re K Hughes Does anyone, anywhere know anything about 1. his fitness and 2. his availability.

McKernan will own midfield in Cavan without with him or Kerans present, unfortunately.

Midfield is looking like it will be Kelly and O'Connell now
Completely agree on Darren Hughes being rested and being brought in gradually through the league,
Sure we arnt in the best position to rest key players but i'd far prefer we blooded some young lads in, gave us more options and had key players getting rest for the championship.

Anyhow it's a testament to him too, had a great league and was one of the most consistent after coming off the back of a long successful season with the club.

Will there be anyone drafted into the squad now? Surely there is some midfielders in Monaghan who could potentially offer something to the squad now?

Best of luck in your recovery Darren

Not only is Darren a massive loss in the middle, its more his defensive role that will be the killer loss. The way he falls back in the pocket and sweeps, positions and stops runs and his tackling will be a loss. I would say mc adam would be his repalcement but dont think he has the speed or awareness to play that role, maybe Doogan but than likely Kelly will drop in and do it or Vinny.

All the best to Darren and his recovery and all going well he might just, might just play a part

Has to be Kelly & O'Connell in the middle for Breffni unless K Hughes fit but rather see latter at FF

I would rather wait and see who is fit come may 18th. If Kelly or O'Connell are injured before the 18th who will replace them?

Midfield options, other than Kelly and O'Connell, Hughes x2 and Kearns

Neil McAdam (the Shadow)
James Mealiff
Jamie Walsh
Tommy Kerr
Gavin Doogan
Peter 'Andre' O'Hanlon
Aaron Lynch
plus
D Byrne
G McGurk
J Coyle
J McElroy

No shortage of options. Picking just 2 will be the problem.
