National Hurling League 2014

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

saulgael we've actually played 32 different players this year so far. Between the Kehoe cup, Ulster final and the fist two league games Monan has utilized a lot of different players. The young lad from Donnelly form Bredagh played early, but hasn't featured since. Who's the lad M. McCartan - where's he from? Also Johnny McCusker made a return yesterday great to see, was crucial in the CRC final with a vital score. It's nice to see different lads getting a chance. James McCartan should take note of Monan's methods! It a shame that we've lost Magic and Coyler, their experience will be badly missed.

Kerry are looking good and are firing on all engines - probably the favorite to win CRC - hopefully they peak in the league.

I thought down were never goin ta be beat by wicklow in what was a mediocre scrappy game. No yin stood out in the forward line, woods was good an wee hughes in the full back line was ok. Typical winter hurling stop start fumbling and sluggish. No real out let, or target men on the field for down.

Cahill not sure what you expected on Sunday we havent bate wicklow in quite a while, magic and james coyle out and paul b, andy savage, mcgarry and coulter all gone. Playing surface was appalling for both teams but would suit wicklow more than us so any type of victory was valuable as 2 points and head to head are vitally important to reach the final. I thought o neill, bailie, toner, johnny mc cusker and finty conway fought hard and will come good as the season progresses and you can see paul flynn influence on that team as we did last year in the Ring competition

Well said Tim. conditions were not great for either team though to be fair to ballycran the pitch was as good as it could have been given the awful weather of late and especially sat night/Sun morning. I thought Down did very well and when you consider the talent of those missing it was a great result. As well as those mentioned Michael Ennis is injured too and he is a strong leader on the pitch. The younger players are stepping up to the mark well and it is great that they are top of the table with a good points difference. cahill, why not try to be positive?? Support and appreciation go a long way in boosting morale. The wind was dreadful and the lads could have faced an onslaught in the second half but held Wicklow at bay. Great result and well done to players and management.

Tim and codown can I ask ye to read my post again. Was the game a typical winter match? "Typical winter hurling stop start fumbling and sluggish." Had down a player on the pitch who could field the ball with confidence? "No real out let, or target men on the field for down." Wer ye at the game? By no means am I puttin the win down far from it I think it was a gud win but for the life o me I couldny see how thon Wicklow team beat down last season.

Yes it was a good win on Sunday against a poor enough Wicklow in difficult conditions in Ballycran. Armagh weren't great the previous week. My concern is the ability of this Down team to retain Christy Ring, playing in Div 2B. Their main rivals are plying at a higher level in a league above. Not good to see Kildare, who beat Down in the Kehoe Cup, languishing at the foot of 1A with nil points. Same as last year I hear you say but last year we had Dule and Magic. The young boys are doing well and I know you can only beat what's put in front of you but our failure to get out of 2B last season could cause us problems when we step up to meet the likes of Derry and Kerry in the CR. We must get promoted this year and leave the likes of Armagh, Mayo, Fingal and co behind.

I'm in agreement with 12792, it will be ard to houl on to the Christy Ring. It was commented by spectators besides me that Down team were very small in stature, that was very evident throughout the pitch. I suppose the management will adopt their games to suit nay use hitting high balls inta wee men. The likes o Kildare and Derry wouldny cause me any anxiety Kerry will be the ones ta beat this year again.

It will be tough to retain the Ring. Get promoted and give the Ring a crack will be a great season. Kerry will be red hot favorites. Next year 2 A will be great preparation for the 2015 Ring. It imperative that we get promoted to help develop this young team.

Where are the two Carryduff players that where on the minor team in 2012? O'Callaghan (Captain), Goodwin plus the guy McMullan from Bredagh? Are these guys involved in any way with the senior squad?

Kerry have to be odds on favourites for Ring but winning promotion is more important for down hurling

Round 3 on Sunday against Mayo in Newry, hopefully 6 points on the board after this match and I hope a few more people turn up that were in Ballycran the last day

Good luck on Sunday against Mayo. Hope there are no more injuries before or during. Also hoping for a better turnout than normal in Newry. Considering the poor weather the turn out in Ballycran wasn't too bad ...now the Ards supporters need to show their appreciation by making the journey to Newry. Next home match is Ballycran though there is one away to Fingal before that. Hopefully another two points on Sunday to keep us sitting at the top of the league and in a good position to go up next year. The young players are certainly doing well this year.

Another good win today and an impressive 6 points from three games. Maybe too many wides today but we got the result. Thought the refereeing was dreadful....some very very strange one sided decisions. Some very good passages of play and a lot of possession. Onwards and upwards now....Fingal next week and then Meath in Ballycran....where hopefully there will be a bigger crowd than today.....just the usual faithfuls! Well done to all.

Unfortunately I didnt make Sundays match but I heard we were poor enough especially in the forward line suppose if you win even when playing badly its not a bad thing

All to play for now with us entering the business end of the league. Went to the game in Swords and it wasn't pretty at times. We'll need to improve a lot if we're to get promotion. We need to be playing the likes of Carlow, Westmeath, Kerry and Derry to take this young team to the next level and promotion is imperative at this stage. Wicklow and Meath are both not bad teams and we have our work cut out to win promotion.

Good luck at the weekend against Meath in Ballycran.

Saulgael do you think we will have enough for Meath this weekend the team seem to be blowing hot and cold at the minute

It will be a tough game especially without the lads form last year that are injured or retired. Monan has done a good job rotating the squad and keeping lads fresh. There look to be a lot of competition for places which is always good. Ballycran is a hard place to win, so I hoping that will be the catalyst for a Down win.
