Christy Ring 2013

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Perhaps the Meath and London games came a little too early for this young Down squad. If we had have played Roscommon, Mayo or Armagh in our first couple of games perhaps promotion woulnt be out of the question. Wasn't at the game on Sunday, but the score line looked like we dominated in the 2nd half? At this stage Kerry looks to be the form team for the Ring and we have them at home in the 1st round. Derry, Kildare, Meath and Wicklow will all be tough to beat and probably a head of us at this stage. Thoughts?

Is the Down team this year all that young? I don't know about a Christy Ring this year although I would love to see it. Kerry certainly the team to beat and Derry will be there or there abouts too. We beat Meath in the Ring last year but they seem to be going well too.. June will tell. Its good to see that we are now starting to put some results together.

It's hard to know how we'll do come championship. The teams above us are at such an advantage. Derry, Kildare, Wicklow and Kerry are all playing at a higher level with better competition which will stand by them come Christy Ring. If we can catch Kerry on the hop and then get some momentum you never know. Any word on how the Paul Flynn involvement is going - I'm sure it can only be positive for Down Hurling.

Great to see Magic back. He gives us a bit of size. Good result yesterday. Hopefully have a solid run in the Ring.

The Kerry game will be huge, but the good thing is that we are at home. I don't think we should fear anyone. We could have beat Meath in the league, Kildare and Wicklow are at our level. Kerry are probaly the favorites at this point and thank god the game is not in Tralee. Derry are a solid and hope we avoid them, but they can be inconsistent.

Well lads what are the thoughts ahead of the Christy Ring clash with Kerry in Newry next Saturday? Hopefully Down can emulate what the four Down clubs are doing in the Antrim Leagues. Any squad news ahead of the big game and has Monan added any new players since the league concluded? Should be a close encounter.

Magic played in the league. Is he hanging around for the summer or will he be jetting off to warmer temperatures. The Galget need him if they want to contend for the Antrim league division one title?

Kerry have always caused us problems but home advantage is a big factor. Unfortuantly we're not playing at home, the game is in Newry.

Kerry will cause problems no doubt. I have to say despite being from South Down I think the home games should be played in the Ards. Simple reason being, the pitches are far better for hurling.

Portaferry's pitch is excellent but you can't play championship matches at a venue with a road running between the pitch and the changing rooms.

The pitch at Ballycran has a hill and is fairly small.

Ballygalget is probably the best bet now with the recent work they have done on the parking

Good luck to the lads this weekend. I believe the tournament is wide open this year. Derry, Wicklow, Meath, Kerry, Kildare and Down all capable of winning. Mayo can beat anyone on the day, but not good enough to win it all, the same with Armagh - good, but not good enough.

Honestly Saulgael i think Kerry are probably the best team in the league and are probably kicking themselves for not giving the Liam McCarthy a lash a few years back when they won the Ring out right. Carlow, Westmeath etc have all improved making the transition to the Leinster Championship form Christy Ring. At least the game is at home (Newry) and wish it was in the Ards even though im not form the Ards i thing it should be played where the majority of our players and support are, but we will have at least 200 people in Newry Saturday and we'll see how it goes. Derry could play their games in Draperstown or Maghera, but they do chose to play them in Celtic Park. All the best this weekend and hopfully we can get the Win. Up Down!
