Down Hurlers 2014

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Well folks, 2013 is now behind us, but what a great season it was. Paul Braniff hosting up the Christy Ring Cup on June 9th at Croke Park is a memory that will live with me for ever. What a great season it was. From the heart break in Newry against Kerry, dramatic draw in Trim, the great day out at McKenna Park to the heroics of Magic's injury time deft flick in the most dramatic of circumstances. Great stuff!

Hats go of to all the players and management. Down a half dozen in the final somehow they fought back and showed great character to come out on top. A true team performance, players like Johnny McCusker, Daniel Toner and Scott Nicholson all coming of the bench and chipping in with vital scores and plays.

Looking forward to 2014 and hope that the team get some more support and we kick on which will be tough. Monan is that man to lead this team forward.

Any new faces on the panel? Is Paul Flynn still involved? Kehoe Cup? NHL? Expectations for 2014 champagne?

It was a fantastic season and a little message to the rest of the hurling fraternity that hurling is still live and well in Down. The squad showed great passion, guts, determination and resolve all season. It was a great call moving the Meath replay to Ballycran and what great turn out we had that day by the supporters. Our first goal should be to obtain promotion in the league!

Winning the Christy Ring was a great success and well over due. As county we need to jump on the Ring success and try and bring the game to the next level. Bredagh and Carryduff are making progress but we need 5/6 additional clubs developing talent at the same level as the North Down clubs to take the county squad to the next level and compete with the likes of Laois, Offaly and Carlow etc.

Down vs. Queens Saturday. I'm assuming that there are several Down players on the Queens' squad?

Well done lads.....taking up where you left off last year...pity you did not get a crack at Antrim yet! Am totally disgusted that the Official Down facebook page has not even mentioned that the hurlers were in action this weekend...nothing on the Down website either. The twitter feed did copy the score from the Portaferry page. What way is this to treat All Ireland Champions??? It is STILL all football....pathetic as it is! Hope you get lots of support this year and that there are some matches in the Ards. Good luck for the rest of this competition....and the year ahead. DELIGHTED that Gerard Monan and his team have stayed on board.

I see we introduced several new players against Queens at the weekend. Fair play to Monan for using the Kehoe Cup to unearth some possible new talent. McGrath, O'Neill, Coleman, Dineen, Branigan, Donnelly and Benny Nicholson all getting run outs. By the names it looks like much of the team was made up of non-Ards players which is always good for the growth of the game in our county. Can some one please explain why Michael Turley plays for Rossa? Is he from Belfast or did he use to hurl with a Down club?

Fingal up next this weekend in the Kehoe Cup quater final. Good luck to the lads. Saulgael the fast majority of the team that beat Queens where Ards players - there was a handful of non- Ards players which I agree is good.

Coleman plays for Newry Shamrocks. Not sure where the other fellows are from including McGrath, Branigan, Donelly and Dineen.

I assume the Mc Grath is James Mc Grath from Ballygalget.Good to see new blood coming in and this is the ideal time for trying them out. Are there any retirements from the squad this year?

Brannigan is from Clonduff, McGrath is from Ballygalget, Coleman is from Portaferry - not Newry, Donnelly from Bredagh, Dineen is a Cork hurler transferred to Down (Ballycran I think).

Brendan Coleman I presume..

Youngish team and all good to see. Lets see how some of them get on with good heavy training over the next few months as some in the past have shown a deep dislike for it,

Should beat Fingal handy enough. This is a great competition to blood new players. Once we get to the semi final there will be stiffer challenges with the likes of Wicklow, Derry, Kildare and Meath etc. Then we'll get a better idea of where we're at and see what the new players can handle. Great to see Monan resting some of the notable experienced players. I see there was a couple of Down lads representing Queens as well. Good to see.

I see quite a few names missing from last years team, Johnston, Paul Braniff, McGarry, Conlon, Coulter, Flynn, Clarke, have they all retired or what?

Well one retired half way through the campaign, so he'll hardly be asked back. Not sure about Clarke or McGarry, they should hang up the boots IMO, Dule should rest up for a while, Magic is there AFAIK... Flynn was playing for Queens.

Hearing good things about our new signing, he might put Mata to shame in the coming months...
