We need to focus on creating and sustaining 7-8 strong juvenile teams, some of those will be amalgamations just like in other counties......if we had 7-8 good teams at each age group that would be an improvenent on where we are currently and each adult club would be getting 3-4 lads a year who have played at a good standard to supplement their adult team......need to start thinking outside the box as numbers are continui g to fall.....

Hate to say it, but minor club hurling in Down is in a bad state just now. Far too few teams competing and teams struggling to field/withdrawing from this level of competition."
No way the Ports should be getting walloped by 17 points, is Freddie managing them??

Paudie,
I hear what you are saying and there's merit in it , but all clubs suffer from attrition all the way through juvenile, the Ards clubs are no exception. We rely heavily on 15 year olds to make up our minor team and that's not uncommon.

The trick is to get as big as base as possible and work from there.

Take the first P4/P4 blitz that will be held in the red high, we'll be there, galgets will be there. Ports will be there, Bredagh and Carryduff in all likelihood will be there, Kilclief will be there also and have had decent teams at these for the last few years.
The rest of the clubs in Down, maybe... Castlewellan, Clonduff, CPN, Ballela, Liatroim, you see once in a while, but never sustained.

Where are these players supposed to come from if we don't see them developing in their formative years?

Only after that all the way up to U12 which can be 11 aside should amalgamations be considered and then only two clubs together if the spadework has been done earlier otherwise you're just kidding yourself.

Caught the second half of the game in Cherryvale last night. Although Bredagh are still not at full strength they looked a strong and well balance side with some very handy hurlers. Could be dark horses for the championship

Should be favourites to win championship following on from their u-16 success 2 years ago. They had a large panel and hope most are still available or have they abandoned ship?

Unfortunately panels are extremely small in the non Ards hence when 2-3 lads are missing it has a disproportainate impact...........we had bare 11 last night and 3 of them were walking wounded from minor football the night before but look we still fielded and played so fair play to the lads who turned out as easy option was to call game off/ concede........

This years championship may benefit a 'rest of Down/Armagh' team rather than subject the weaker teams to soul destroying defeats. It would also save time, money and effort as well as free up a usually late finishing competition . Start them in a preliminary game against one of the big 4.
