We are likely to play Dublin in a Quarter Final. If we make a semi final I think we could win it even though we will be underdogs, as it would be unlikely to be against Kilkenny with the no repeat pairings if possible. If we don't get our act together we won't even make a semi final though.

I agree with you Teraintom. There is Some really poor content on this forum about Under 20s in particular and hopefully when the minors start it won`t be the same. It is clear that there are a few people with agendas and maybe even involved posting here. The bottom line is a committee loed by Adrian Fenlon put a management team in place last year and once that happened everyone in the county should have got behind them. Instead of that we had some people talk up people who did not get the job as if they were the new Liam Griffin when they really have done nothing as a manager. There are strong rumours that a few lads on the panel from one particular university up here did not buy in at all. If that is the case they should be rightly dropped and I suspect we won`t see them play senior for us either. I was in Abbotstown on Saturday for the Celtic Challenge game v Down and the young lads played really well winning by 5/6 points. The wexford 15s had played Dublin earlier and again apparently played really well. wexfordwin (Wexford) - Posts: 188 - 15/04/2024 09:55:55 2537921 Link 0 |
Dont like being critical of management teams but id agree with everything you said there

In fairness to management Whelan was out all year up to now with an LCL injury. Cillian Byrne is not long back. Dylan Purcell isn't fully fit apparently. Darby Purcell and Luke Murphy didn't work hard enough v Kilkenny and got dropped. At the same time there seems to be some sort of issue between Farrell and the management, as there was at minor. He's not Henry Shefflin but he's better than some of the lads on the team, Luke Roche and Tadg Brohan haven't played at all. Brohan, Luke Roche and Farrell are forwards, yet he started 4 lads who play as backs for their clubs, and previously for the county, in the front 6, Wickham, Molloy, Doyle and Roche. In fairness they worked harder than some of the other lads, especially Wickham and Molloy, but then so did Farrell when he came on against Kilkenny. Cillian Byrne is probably the best inside forward we have, but he looked lost at centre forward on Saturday, he's not the biggest lad. He did OK in midfield against Kilkenny, but he's surely better inside than the 2 backs we started there against Laois before Moran got moved inside. I know we don't know how lads are going in training, but if a squad, that contains at least 12 lads who played for last years team that got to and narrowly lost a Leinster final, can't be selected, set up, coached and motivated to be more competitive this year than we have been, surely the fault for that lies with the management? Set up, coaching, selection and motivation are surely their primary jobs. Viking66 (Wexford) - Posts: 15077 - 15/04/2024 10:05:35 2537930 Link 0 |
Only 3 lads applied for the job. The one who the HAC apparently thought was the 3rd best application initially, ended up with the job.

I don't personally know anyone who was on any of the 3 tickets that applied. I'm not at u20 training. I'm only commenting as a Wexford supporter on what I'm seeing on the pitch, and basing my comments on what I've previously seen of this squad last year at u20, previous years at minor, and playing for their colleges and clubs. If the 5 lads I think you are talking about aren't motivated then why is that? Isn't that one of a managers jobs? The one who started on Saturday showed truly pathetic work rate at times btw, and I know he's better than that as I watched him play in a college game earlier this year. Another was our best player in one of the u20 games against Kilkenny last year. Viking66 (Wexford) - Posts: 15077 - 15/04/2024 10:16:32 2537937 Link 0 |

Its a bit rich you complaining about the comments around management yet your throwing those young lads under the bus, its obvious which college your talking about. I don't know anyone player or management personally that's involved and have no agenda but I do think weather its the players or management responsibility that's this panel has under performed in the 2 games so far. Leinster was always going to be tough at this age group this year with Kilkenny, Offaly and Galway all at a high standard but I firmly believe for example Kilkenny shouldn't have been able to swat us aside with ease like they did.

Johnny Murphy the ref for Sunday, he did the league final where for the most part he did a good job, to me only made 1 really poor call which was the penalty, I actually wouldn't be critical of him for the Mullen yellow, at 1st when I saw it live I taught it might be a red, didn't realise until I saw the replay it was a perfectly timed shoulder. Really looking forward to Sunday now. Was talking to one of the lads on the panel over the weekend training has gone well and they are looking forward to the game . Hopefully we get a big Wexford crowd in to support the lads. Fully believe this game will make or break our year

Agreed. Others were approached to express an interest in the u-20 Job but declined to apply. Performances just not up to scratch so far. Yellowhelmet (Australia) - Posts: 118 - 15/04/2024 11:50:50 2537979 Link 0 |

One thing I do think is I'm not sure we are getting things right in terms of the gap between minor and u20. tearintom (Wexford) - Posts: 1457 - 15/04/2024 12:00:20 2537985 Link 0 |
Anyone know if Sundays game is on TV anywhere? Or will we have to endure Mr. Spratt for the match? Davidwex (Wexford) - Posts: 11 - 15/04/2024 12:10:20 2537991 Link 0 |
No your 2 options are go to the game or listen to Spratt and have no idea what's going on...

But our u20 hurlers were very competitive the last 2 years, things aren't right there this year so far for whatever reason, the team might not be of the same quality as those 2 teams but I think they should be doing better with the players available. U20 football is a tricker one, I suppose another factor there is dual players are still a thing at u17, 3 years ago at minor 2 of the standout players were Eoin Whelan and Darby Purcell and I know a few of the other players on the u20 hurling panel and very decent footballers.

Hopefully there's a change but as things stand on April 27th Minors play Kilkenny at home at 2 and Seniors are playing in Belfast at 3. TerribleFootwork (Wexford) - Posts: 1760 - 15/04/2024 12:40:43 2538011 Link 0 |
Louth Wexford was a late edition to GAAGO coverage but id say that was only because it was scheduled in Portlaoise after Kildare Wicklow which made it easy for them to broadcast then

Agreed that's been a problem here for years. There's not really a gym culture here among our young people for some reason. As regards the hurlers apart from the full back line the majority of the u20s will still be u20 next year also though.
