Agree 100% although it was demonstrated well in the Davy era that if your opposition is expecting you to be running the ball all the time the occasional route one ball causes absolute mayhem. We looked excellent in the league and were developing a really promising crisp diagonal ball into open spaces out in front of our quick forwards. We were extremely hard to beat. When Chin came back he was amazing, but our forward unit got worse which cost us dearly when we met Kilkenny and Clare. Chin wasn't on his game so we totally collapsed. We can't allow that to happen this year. Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 3223 - 19/12/2024 19:07:23 2584135 Link 0 |
I'd agree with the game plan that we had in the league suited us well, but let's be realistic about it the league is a different thing altogether than cship!!! All teams have a different agenda!!! We were trying our bollox in the league, imagine our best player in the league was Casey!!!! He never got a look in after the league, chin was good in the league rory the odd day!!! When we met the better teams we got destroyed exactly like championship!!! The game plan in league worked because we trained really hard for it other teams weren't up to our level we got time on the ball to do it!!! In reality we tried it in championship games and we got turned over nearly always or it just broke down!!! What I'm trying to say,ya need lads who are comfortable on the ball and can hurl under pressure,we haven't enough of them to do that, infact some of them don't want to hit the ball!!! Chin was unreal against the poorer sides in Leinster and nowhere to be seen after that unfortunately lads we are in big trouble here in Wexford!! Leinster is wide open I agree but we will still struggle and in reality if lee chin and rory get tied up,I don't think we can win games because we won't get enough scores,I think Dublin Kilkenny will, not sure about Galway yet but they have hurlers no doubt or Offaly really yet!!! Come outside of Leinster and we'll see what happens, the usual a good trimming!! I think that's the reality of it!!! theboys (Wexford) - Posts: 240 - 20/12/2024 07:52:47 2584168 Link 0 |
For sure. But occasional is the important word there!

Was the Clare team of 13 or this year always amazing? What made Limerick special? It was revolutionary coaching. Why can't we spend a winter doing that? We're not going to win the all Ireland with this group. Could we win Leinster? Absolutely. Will commitment, discipline, the right attitude and a bit of luck you can do an awful lot. I don't agree that we tried to develop that game in the championship either. I believe we totally abandoned it. I distinctly remember the off the ball runners just stopped running in the Dublin and Antrim games because they just weren't being given the ball. It drove me and those around me absolutely cracked because we had opportunities to absolutely tear them apart. I think you overestimate Dublin too. They only have one hurler that would be certain to get in our starting 15. Sorry two. Their keeper is better than ours as well which got them the result in croke park in 23. The proof is in the pudding. In spite of the fact we've underachieved we have a better record in round robin than either Dublin or Galway in terms of qualification, and a better record than Dublin against Munster opposition. In spite of that, the fact we haven't made a Leinster final since 19 is really really poor, and mainly down to not being able to put a run of performances together. Jackie Tyrrell put it very well. "Wexford have no middle gears. They're either very good or very poor" If you actually break it down looking at the last 3 years in a block Dublin a draw and two defeats in spite of being on winning positions Antrim a Dodgy win and a defeat in spite of dominating both games for long periods Westmeath a draw and a defeat due to total capitulation Kilkenny two wins and a narrow defeat with consistent performances Galway we blow very hot and cold. A draw, a resounding win and a resounding defeat in a game we struggled badly. We need to figure out why this keeps happening. It's much more complex than the lazy assertion that we just aren't good enough. Two quarters with Clare then, should have beaten them in 22 but let them off the hook. Were well beaten last year, although Rory was a major factor, I still don't think we'd have found a way through when it came down to it. Reflection on this suggests it's a psychological problem rather than a capability one. Hurling is a very simple game. If you're struggling to win primary possession in a more traditional way (almost nobody is doing this now) you need to find another way. Strength is easy to fix with time. Better decision making requires intensive coaching. With a few results your confidence grows and you start making your own luck. That's the bit we're badly missing. The only good trimming we have got off a Munster team in Championship in the last good few years, apart from 2020 when we were woefully underprepared, came last year. But we were holding our own when we had even numbers on the pitch. Yes, it's a fact we haven't beaten a Munster side in Championship in nearly 10 years, and while we didn't lose most of our championship games against them by more than a few points it has to be said we never really looked like winning most of them either with 10 minutes to go. The obvious 2 exceptions being 2019 and 2022. 2021 possibly also, as we had most of the momentum in the second half. Viking66 (Wexford) - Posts: 14123 - 20/12/2024 08:46:15 2584172 Link 0 |
