Molloy was playing as a third midfielder most of the game, Wickham wing-forward. Rowley was centre-forward with SImon Roche and Cillian Byrne inside initially. Byrne moved out when Cathal Parker was taken out of the game, with Luke Murphy playing at wing-forward and Wickham moving inside. Parker was very influential and a big loss, came on having passed a HIA (the ref gave a throw ball having stopped the game for the high hit he got!!!) Whelan was outstanding at centre-back, in his first start at any level following a cruciate injury, really impressive. ben Asple was missed at corner-back, although Furlong did well in his place. Cian O Tuama not at his best, he was on a good hurler though. All in all, it was just enough to get second place on a slightly better score diference. -13 to Laois's -16. The biggest issue is how little goal threat the team is offering, their goalie hadn't a save to make. SImon Roche made a number of good runs, got 2 points from quick low balls from Conor O'Toole into the corner. He also made a good run and catch in the lst play, with the ref blowing up as he prepared to shoot from 30 yards, the last of many strange decisions. Luke Murphy caught two or three great balls, but his shooting was less impessive. Our next game is 8 May. Westmeath play Carlow and the winner plays Dublin and we play the winner of that. The team could do with a game against someone in between. wendellgee (Wexford) - Posts: 29 - 13/04/2024 17:00:51 2537673 Link 0 |

It really was a game low on quality, as another poster commented the amount of frees scored by Laois in comparison to their 2 from play is a fairly shocking stat. I don't want to be bashing today's referee but he seemed to blow for a free any time 2 players came together. GaeilgeDubh (Wexford) - Posts: 16 - 13/04/2024 18:03:40 2537682 Link 0 |
Like the seniors v Westmeath last year, maybe Laois is this un20 teams level this year. Past hurler (None) - Posts: 873 - 13/04/2024 18:27:14 2537688 Link 0 |
We seemed to play Moran inside after Parkers injury. Parker played well. Wickham and Molloy were lively too. Byrne and Rowley were quiet enough for 2 of our best players. Think most of our lack of goal threat was because we played very little inside or into the spaces for the inside lads to run out onto. At the same time the lads inside weren't making the runs. The players kept trying to run it through their packed midfield, got turned over, and then fouled. We are stuck for natural forwards which isn't the management's fault. Maybe Byrne and Luke Murphy could be tried inside and told to keep making the runs out to be available for a ball into space. The half forwards, forward midfielder(s), and withdrawn inside lad, Doyle today, need to make runs forwards to support them then to run in on goal. Laois did pack the area though which made it hard to create goal chances. Their lads worked harder than some of ours.

Our halfback line gave away alot of the frees.

Is this the laois team that beat us in minor?poor match today. Would that wexford team be young enough, is there much under age again next year? As for the ref I say nothing... but whelan was told one more attack and he stepping over the free, he puck a lovely ball into Roche hand, he rounded his man 30 yard out and was about to pull the trigger when ref blew the whistle... hunting (Wexford) - Posts: 1069 - 13/04/2024 21:15:50 2537700 Link 0 |
really poor standard today , laois no world beaters ,and unfortunately we have been weak at minor for last few years, talent is there in wexford but management needs to look out side the box at club and school hurling, academy in ferns not producing! roche is a talent and will play senior for oulart and wexford but as a number 6 , Rowley and Luke Murphy are both fast athletes but as hurlers, they lack stick work, staying out of the gym for the winter and concentrate on the ball alley would do them wonders, was at st peters vs offally schools and like today both were out of the game, I hear good reports on the minor boys this year wexfordminor92 (Wexford) - Posts: 75 - 14/04/2024 11:32:50 2537734 Link 0 |

These minors are the product of the Academy in Ferns though?

Coaching in the schools and clubs has to get alot better also. In fairness to Harris and the CB there are loads of courses available for people to go on to improve most different aspects of coaching the modern game. We need more lads from the clubs and schools to go on them.

Not saying he's a world-beater or anything and not saying at all that we should be absolving the players of blame but I don't think it says much for the U20 management team if Darragh Farrell was coming on as a sub last year and is now being completely left out of the match-day squad ElGranSenor (Wexford) - Posts: 398 - 14/04/2024 14:19:59 2537749 Link 0 |
Brohan and Purcell played for the u20s last year also. Brohan and Farrell are forwards. We started around 10 lads who would be viewed as backs against Laois.

Roche, Asple, Purcell, Byrne, Paidi Doyle, Roark, Chapman, Rowley, will all be u20 again next year. A good lot of the Laois team will be also. Whelan, O'Tuama, Kehoe, Brohan, Farrell, Rowley, Byrne, Simon Roche, Dylan Purcell, Luke Murphy, Luke Roche, Asple, Chapman, Cian Doyle, Darby Purcell were all with the u20s last year, although Cian Doyle, Chapman and now Asple are injured this year. Ridiculous really. I'm led to believe Aidan o connor has some individual issues with Darragh Farrell dating back to when he was at minor. Aidan o connor managed him at minor and never played him in a single minute of championship. I'm not saying the chap is a world beater either, but he is definitely good enough to be on that Wexford team. It looks to myself and others I've spoken to that the management is bringing personal issues into play. Considering the impact Farrell made against Kilkenny and then to be dropped to the extended panel is absurd. The half back line apart from Whelan is one of the worst half back lines I've seen for a good few years at u20's level and to say Dylan Purcell cannot get into that is just crazy considering he was starting games last year for Wexford!!

I don't think I've ever seen a successful side with a management team who lets these personal issues with players have an impact on team selection You're not necessarily going to likely everyone on the team or backroom staff but that doesn't mean you let that get in the way of you working with them, I don't think Peter Schmeichel and Roy Keane ever liked each other but they never let it get in their way on the pitch ElGranSenor (Wexford) - Posts: 398 - 14/04/2024 21:47:57 2537848 Link 0 |
9 of the lads who started against Galway last year are still on this years panel. And 2 more on this years panel came on against Galway. Plus Whelan missed the game injured. That's 12 lads. Only 6 of them started yesterday against Laois.

And how well have these lads trained? How did they perform in challenge games? How have they trained in the last couple of weeks? Easy to pick out names and this fella done this and that. tearintom (Wexford) - Posts: 1457 - 15/04/2024 08:04:39 2537885 Link 0 |
Genuinely think we have good enough hurlers in that U20 team to be challenging for Leinster, infact im sure of it!!! Most of this team was beat by Laois at minor with a last minute goal, and a drawn game today which could really have went anyway!!! The thing that hurts me the most about this is how bad we are tactically on the line!!! Its actually frightening how far we are behind!!! It was the same at minor!!! I seen Derek McGrath on the line with Laois yesterday and I'd say he played a huge part as he did with the minor team with Laois as regards set ups!!!! We let Laois do as the pleased and made it very difficult for ourselves to impose any sort of play on them!!! We let them have the short puck out to build there running game, nobody layed a glove on them till nearly half way!!! Also I didnt see any forward track a man back making runs off the shoulder!!! It was fairly pathetic to be honest in our own back yard!!! When we had to tackle we couldn't,it looked terrible!!! I'd have to question management big time!!!as regards the team everyone will have an issue with selection but that wouldn't bother me that much,it's the application of the players!!! Looks very disjointed to me!!feel sorry for those players if they are been let down by management!!! What a waste!!! theboys (Wexford) - Posts: 253 - 15/04/2024 08:11:37 2537889 Link 1 |
That say a lot doesn't it. It was a shame Rory Jacob wasn't give the chance. Anyway good luck to the lads the next day, I say getting to a semi final is probably the best we can hope for at present.
