Ah stop they're the one team I'm praying we avoid in the qualifiers. James Owens did us or Clare no favours today…

Every foul is a goal scoring opportunity then! There's no justifying that decision. If it was made by a lad who never witnessed a field sport before you'd still be fuming! Ban (Westmeath) - Posts: 1479 - 04/07/2021 17:39:26 2356087 Link 0 |

Absolutely disgraceful. The penalty/sinbin rule should only apply within 20 yards of the goal.

Lovely comment Tash, especially about the people back at games again. I agree with you about the game, it certainly could have gone either way in the 70 minutes. With extra-time, it seemed to me the Wexford players were tiring faster than Kilkenny, more of them dropping with cramp. I initially thought the KK players are fitter, but that wasn't it, then I thought WX must have worked harder than KK in the 70 mins. But no, that was nonsense, both teams had giving it there all. It is as you say, KK had good/great players to bring on off the bench. Wexford could have easily won the game. Looking at all the results so far, there is not much between anybody on the day, with the exception of Limerick who are probably a bit ahead of the pack; but 'on the day' they are beatable. Wexford now go into the qualifier rounds, and though there will be some other good teams there, they have as good as chance as any of them. The players need to realise, and I'm sure Davy will let them know, they matched and were possibly unlucky in losing to a very good, and resilient KK team. Hold your up. The GAA are doing their utmost to destroy hurling. Unnecessary water breaks, banning overhead pull, needless countless frees, and now this penalty rubbish. Introduction of mandatory helmets, face guards, light ball and elimination of ground hurling has been to detriment of this great game!

Also Wexford's running and short passing style of play is very energy sapping. Wexford were out on their feet in extra time. When Tipperary beat Wexford in the All Ireland semi final in 2019, Wexford had an extra player for much of the game but it was them who were out on their feet at the end of that match.Shocking decision by a Wexford referee against Clare today. Never a penalty and sin bin because it was never a goal scoring chance . That's as bad a decision by a ref as I can remember in a gaa match. It did seem to change the course of the game. endgame (Roscommon) - Posts: 2596 - 04/07/2021 18:10:22 2356106 Link 1 |

you'd have to feel for clare today as the penalty was the turning point in the game. it was a disgraceful decision and players who puts their lives on hold deserve better than that. munsterchamps (Limerick) - Posts: 1151 - 04/07/2021 18:12:53 2356107 Link 3 |

This is just the beginning of it, the new rules are going to be fully tested in the championship and when mistakes are made by refs there will be huge criticism. Remember referees have only had two games to road test these rules and easily could have had a game where there were no black cards or penalties. Ref was unquestionably wrong today, never a penalty and the double punishment crucified Clare. Blatant Clare penalty too ignored. This was not the reason black card in hurling was introduced. The Murphy incident was clearly a penalty. The Wexford player was brought down bearing on goal.

Its up there joint first with Joe Sheridans try against Louth in the leinster final. How in the name of jaysus can everybody watching a match can see how wrong these decisions apart from the ref? Its high time they got linesman and umpires more involved with helping referees with big decisions. Bon (Kildare) - Posts: 2632 - 04/07/2021 18:33:30 2356125 Link 1 |

Some interesting games over the weekend some expected wins for Limerick, tipperary and kilkenny. The biggest surprise was Dublin beating Galway. We will only know how good a performance that was after the leinster final. The most disappointing team has to be wexford after their collapse in extra time after going a goal up and kilkenny reduced to 14 men. This was a total bottle job by wexford they were diabolical to a man, nobody wanted to drive on and horse into the cats they just threw in the towel. Some of their players were more interested in coming off than anything else they looked like they were happy to take it lying down yellow bellies for sure. Now that the Irish government require mandatory quarantine for visitors from UK and presumably Northern Ireland... theoretically counties traveling into North for games, should quarantine when coming back! What a joke! Whole country is soft.., no wonder Luxembourg beat Ireland in football. In saying that, the Tipp /Clare game and Wexford /Kilkenny was top drawer. Haven't seen a better player than T.J Reid... his longevity and general all round play is unsurpassed! Rockies (Cork) - Posts: 947 - 04/07/2021 18:43:36 2356136 Link 0 |

Can we have some sort of understanding and sympathy for referee's decisions. He (or she) make split second decisions on what they see in a moment in time. Unlike the vast majority of us, they do not have access to replays (slow motion) from different angles. Cockney_Cat (UK) - Posts: 2866 - 04/07/2021 18:46:14 2356138 Link 0 |

Whats worse is that the game was played with very few frees and some fantastic defending and disciplined hurling throughout the field. When a ref makes a decision like this he really puts the boot into all the hard work teams have put into playing to the new rules. Not only did he destroy Clares chances he ruined a great game aswell. Unlike Jackie Tyrell who seems to thinks there should be no rules at all, I think the rule is worth keeping but something need to be done about the interpretation of the rule outside the penalty area and D area. Your asking for sympathy and you tell a Clare man here to go off and follow his footballers!

What is wrong with the GAA in this year of 2001? There are 7 officials involved in a game and the ref does not consult anyone before making a decision before giving a match changing penalty and a sending off. To those who don't want video replays how about agreeing that consultation should take place. Especially the lines man is also a ref. Tipp won and that is their good and not responsible for refereeing. However in my opinion incorrect decisions decided the result today and that is not what you want to happen. Mistake will occur but how about doing everything possible to avoid them. Consultation between officials can not be too much of an ask and then let the cards fall where they will.
