Wexford Club Hurling Championships 2023

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Was in Bellefield and the Park today, missed 1st half of Rapps/ Rathnure with the overlap best individual performer in my opinion was Charlie McGuckin(at wing back) followed by Liam Schokman, Liam Og and Kevin Foley. Oilgate were on top on 1st 20 mins particularly in the middle 3rd but Gorey got 3 goals in the 10 mins before half time to turn the game on its head, Oilgate and Rapps both had sweepers in Mini Heffernan and Ryan Mahon, Damien Reck started centre forward but moved to wing back in the 2nd half picking up Dunbar. Annes and Martins was awful stuff in the 1st half with wides sucking the life out of the game but bar a Martins purple batch when they scored 1-4 without reply Annes were excellent in the 2nd half( No Dee for them today), Eoin Ryan did a great job on Rory O'Connor, Martins were really flat and will be hugely disappointed. Rapps were 11 up at half time after playing with the wind and despite conceding a couple of goals always looked comfortable (Rory Higgins goal was a cracker), Larkin their goalie took all the frees around the 65 range which is unusual for hurling while Oisin Pepper, took the closer in efforts. Ferns Shels was a very stop start game 1st half especially, Shels in fairness to them battled back manfully with 14 men, I reckon there's definitely a stronger and weaker group this year with Crossabeg, Oulart and Rathnure the 3 weakest at senior this year in my opinion.

Replying To Viking66:  "Wins as expected for the Alley and Jimmys. Big win for Gusserane against Horeswood. Tara Rocks off to a winning start too. Anyone at any of those games?"
Was at the Alley game. Poor enough game to be honest. O'Leary good on frees, thought Cormac Walsh has potential around the middle and was surprised they took O'Hagan off. Young wing-back for Blackwater was lively, and their two corner backs hurled a mountain of ball. Mossy Murphy has regressed a bit, looked to be one for the future 3-4 years ago but hasn't pushed on.

On this display, I don't know if the Alley will be in contention, although long way to go yet.

Replying To Yellaman:  "Yes Viking, I watched the Rocks v askamore game. Decent enough game but askamore lost their way when PJ Nolan went off injured. Young ? Curtis was lively and v good on frees for the rocks. Devitt showed his class too. Nothing much else to report !!"
Thanks Yellaman! PJ Nolan is still a class hurler he was probably their best player in last year's semifinal too. Tompkins and Tucker were good too. Where did Devitt play? 6? Or midfield?

Replying To WexMurph:  "Fair, maybe last ten years then :L
I'm my opinion John Leacy has been one of the best club hurlers in the county last decade or so, pity he never really got a consistent run with Wexford , and I could nearly say the same for football"
Agreed.

I can't understand why lacey never made the grade.

Glynn barntown are funny like that though. They produced a fantastic group that won Premier at 16/minor around 06 I think and looking at the team last night only got 3 seniors off it

For the like of oulart and rathnure they seem to do much better keeping lads together.

Eoin Ryan must be carrying his form from last year into this campaign so far so. He definitely should be considered for the county set up, especially when you see that a supposed county lad could only come on for Martin's.

What's wrong with the psyche of Rathnure? Or are they just poor defensively? I thought the relegation final was the kick up the backside they needed to recalibrate, but it seems they still have desperate starts to games in their system. I see Eoin Larkin has swapped the black and amber of Kilkenny for the black and gold of Rathnure and maybe they'll find their groove as the group progresses, and surely are eyeing up the ties vs. Crossabeg and Oulart to gain the points. But they need to be tuned in from the first whistle.

Replying To JT22:  "I made it in to Ross today for the Adamstown and Jimmies game. Overall it was very poor game, the Jimmies always looked like winning but never really pulled away. I think there a good side and have a couple of new faces this year. It'll be interesting to see how they get on over the next few weeks.

Adamstown looked very poor, I think they lost 4 during the game to injuries. I think they could be in trouble this year if the injury's, a couple of them did look serious enough. I know they will have a couple to come back in but overall they did look quite weak to me."
Thanks JT22! Thought Adamstown might struggle this year ok.

Moan ahead.
€10 for a video of a club match is too much. I would love to buy 2-3 of the club matches this weekend where I know lads hurling, and my own club.
Could they not do a €20 "weekend pass" and allow it on one device and one device only to stop code sharing?
Maybe they are raking in the cash for the streaming services, my guess is not.

Replying To tearintom:  "Of course it would.

But clubs feel like they are getting one over on other clubs who concentrate on one code even if it is to an overall detriment. We are now in a situation where it's game fold by recovery followed by game, very title training done, no opportunity for a fella breaking through to work his way into a team.

Shaun Murphy picked up a hamstring injury last night, simple enough injury, if we have alternate weeks ands it's a 2 week timeframe he misses one game now it's double, worse again if it's a little more severe, possibly misses the bulk of the group stages, but hey as long as those great hurling clubs like rathnure and oulart are being inconvenienced a bit.

The fella who hurls only is hampered by this system and as for the chap who plays football only, he might as well give up which some are. Alternate weeks or two week blocks suits all, so what if a club get in an extra training session or two in either code compared to others? is that not what we bloody well want and need to develop our players? And anyone it's up to each club to prioritise what's best for them.

People moan about is not developing enough quality players, how can we in this system and then rail again changing it becaus they think they have a bit of an advantage, we need to start deciding what's best for gaa in Wexford overall imho."
You got it Tom, but you can imagine the football guerilla's on the county going mad at those pesky hurling clubs and the big advantage they get because Shaun Murphy gets a chance to get over an injury.
Wexford want better players alright, but it has to suit a code a vast swathe of the county hasn't much interest in. Like it or lump it, its how it is and while I'll wake up tomorrow to a volley of responses, everybody knows its true.

Joe O'Connor picked up a hamstring injury in the league final I suspect that's why he didn't start, he actually played really well at midfield when he came on.

Couldn't agree more. And to be honest the easiest solution is one that no one in the whole county would get behind because every club bar 2 or 3 in each code are dual clubs. But I'd love to know if it was put to a vote in each club that they had to choose either to be a hurling or a football club, how many clubs would choose just hurling? I'd imagine it would be the majority choosing hurling

Huge interest in football in most clubs including those dual clubs that will be in the last four of the senior hurling championship. Rathnure and Oulart will struggle to stay up this year.

Devitt played mostly as sweeper, which seemed strange playing down the ( Patrick's park) hill, with the breeze, in the first half. But he cleaned up well, and managed to get forward for 2 or 3 long range scores.

I just think Rathnure aren't good enough at the moment to compete for top honours, they've been down the bottom end of Senior for the last 2-3 years, only won 2 championship games since 2020, Harriers in 2021 and relegation play off last year.

Haven't had a great run of things but think they still have the potential to kick on a bit further this year. Have the forwards to cause any defence trouble but the ball doesn't seem to stick well and there is a lack of work rate up that end to win it back. They also give away way too many frees think the Rapps only scored 1 point from play in the second half. Don't think they're likely to threaten near the business end but with Crossabeg and Oulart in the group I do feel they could kick on for a Quarter Final this year although both those teams will feel the same especially with a point each on the board. Last 5 minutes of the first half was disastrous for them yesterday went from being 5 down with that wind to 11 down killed the game as a contest. They did improve in the second half particularly when AJ and Michael Redmond came on but still well off the pace of the likes of Rapps Shels and Ferns in their group.

They Probably would choose hurling. I would too truth be told. And it would stand to our intercounty hurling team. But wouldn't be true to the ethos of the GAA. And the many young lads that enjoy underage football.

Does anyone know if the draw for Leinster club championships have been done or provisional dates set? Obviously would give a good indication of the window everyone is working in to get the championships in both codes run off.

Went to the double header in Kennedy Park.
1st game was a little scrappy and disappointing, especially from a Fethard perspective, although if they get their short game clicking better and hit less wides they will pose problems for anyone down the line. Quite possibly they were not wanting to show their hand to their rivals so early. Cloughbawn were more efficient, did the basics better, Flood got on alot of ball til he went down injured in the 1st half after which he operated closer to goal for a while until he ran the knock off , and Kehoe was very good on the frees, unlike Cian Byrne who had an uncharacteristic off day on them.
The second game started with Bunclody looking a good bit sharper than Taghmon, making space around the middle and generally hurling a little better. Ben Martin and Sean Kenny both got on alot of ball, and Regan looked sharp in the corner. As the game went on though Taghmon started improving slowly, until from the 10th to the 20th minute in the 2nd half when they scored 8 points in a row without reply, which basically won the game. Cathal Doyle was particularly impressive and finished the game with 10 points 6 from play. Even more impressive when you consider he missed 8 weeks training up until last week with a hamstring injury. The backs played well largely throughout, although the 2nd goal in particular was a poor one to concede. Jack Dunne was solid in goal, and a fitter, bigger, Stephen O'Gorman bagged 3 points from play. Conor Murphy got 2, and superset Stephen O Keefe clipped over 2 excellent points also. Probably aside from Doyle the standout performance was from Adam Sinnott, who like Doyle had only returned from injury this week. Heads up hurling and a great motor, covered every blade of grass.
All in all the 2 points were what all 4 teams came to New Ross for, so Cloughbawn and Taghmon will be the happier camps this week at training. Both have loads to work on though.
