Replying To OfficerDibble: "I think its an excellent grade, combining the free flowing hurling of minors with lads up to 21 playing all grades, including intercounty. The games I saw were of a high quality in my opinion as there were fewer men in their mid 20s or 30s who are better at turning these matches into a physical battle. Yes, it will always be a problem grade shoehorned into the calendar, but we would lose good hurling games if we get rid of it. I know all our lads, (senior, junior, junior b and minor) although out, loved it and remarked that it should be kept." Have to agree its a great grade to watch at club or intercounty.

Replying To Viking66: "Have to agree its a great grade to watch at club or intercounty." Enjoyed U21 when I was at that age myself, even if it's a long time ago now (30 years or more!). A last blast with the lads you'd come up through underage with, and the added bonus of being able to go for a pint afterwards, without anybody throwing sideways glances at "them young lads drinking" :)
For what it's worth though, way it operated back then probably wouldn't pass now. Eight teams per grade, and a straight knockout of quarter finals, semi finals, and final. Hurling usually around April, and football in November.

Great grade it might be but when do you play it? Isn't every grade a great grade in its own way? And if every player getting games in other grades, and its shoehorned in somewhere and teams such as Naomh Eanna end up giving walk overs what use is it? When I first moved down here our local club got to a final and it was played in January of the following year if I remember right.

Replying To TerribleFootwork: "There's no room for a week break as Leinster club championship starts October 21st." If thats the case we shouldn't compete (or enter the previous year's champion). If anything we are trying to do right with both sports at club level and being punished for it. Our county board need to start complaining a lot louder at Croke Park.

If anything we are trying to do right with both sports at club level and being punished for it. Our county board need to start complaining a lot louder at Croke Park." As previously pointed out, the provision to enter the previous year's champions in provincial competitions was removed a long time ago (twenty years or more).
As also pointed out, clubs were 100% against the idea of not competing in Leinster at all.
On the other thing, it's actually Leinster Council rather than Croke Park where the complaints need to go to, and Co. Board did in fact make strong representations on this. Particularly with regard to the Leinster Club Football Championships, where Wexford asked them to push the start dates back by a few weeks and then play the rounds week-on-week, instead of leaving two weeks between each round.
Leinster responded by pushing the start date back by just one week. Suppose you could say it was a small victory, but not enough.

Naomi eanna were beaten in preliminary quarterfinals for the premier grade and obviously weren't interested in going into the lower division after that. Showed a total disrespect to the competition.

I was looking at the referees appointed for the senior Quarter finals. I think 3 of them (Maybe 4) are refereeing a Senior Quarter final for the first time. Also looking at the appointments for the championship so far I count 15 different Refs have covered the 30 games to date. Definitely a lot of New faces at senior level. Any thoughts on the Standards of refereeing as a result. As a player I would hope that the best refs are being appointed. But it's good to see some new faces coming through. I hope we aren't discussing controvercies next week.

Having read the last few pages of this thread, it just shows how difficult our fixtures are in Wexford. It seems that there is such a difference in opinion and it is similar among clubs who usually vote in their own interests and not for the good of the county. The summary from last few pages is 1. We want groups of 6 in hurling and football 2. We do not want championships run off so quickly even though there is a deadline of October 21st for Leinster club championship 3.We want a gap week in each code even though time does not allow it 4. We want to fit in U21 but not mid week even though there is no other time to play it 5. We want to have our champions in Leinster club championship 6. We want replays instead of penalty shoot outs but don`t want the replays played mid week (even though there is no time)
It was interesting listening to Alex Lynch who is dual on wexford gaa tv who said he loves the system and then Cono O Leary from Oulart who is one code who wanted to change codes every second week which would suit Oulart. It just shows how difficult it is to sort the whole thing.

12 senior hurling teams
Split into four groups of three
2 group games guaranteed
Top group into q-final
2nd & 3rd placed teams into a play off round.
4 teams out of the championship after 3 games.

Senior: Martins v Crossabeg- Crossabeg competed very well in the group phase, are very well organised and if the Martins are off it could be a banana skin. I'd give Martins the benefit of the doubt last week, they lost inconsequential final group games in 2019,17 & 15 are ended up in the final, I think they'll have to much firepower and might win by 7
Rapps v Gorey- Probably 3rd and 4th in the pecking order for me so potentially game of the weekend, looks like 2 well balanced sides but I'd be swaying towards the Rapps slightly, think their half back line might club the Gorey threats like Dunbar and Cullen and help them over the line by 2 or 3 points.
Ferns v Oilgate- You'd have to be really impressed with job Pat Bennett has done with Ferns and I expect the likes of Byrne Dunbar and a few older heads who sat out games to return at the weekend. Oilgate look a well organised side under Mythen but I don't think they've the firepower upfront to get the result and I think Ferns will win by 5 or 6.
Shels vs Annes- Another difficult game to call, both sides mixed the good and the bad in the group phase so hard to know what to expect, I think this one might go to extra time and I think Shels might have the legs to get over the line in that case.
Intermediate Alley v James- If Jimmies get a few bodies back in from last week this could be very tight but I think Alley might shade it by 2 or 3.
Taghmon v Blackwater- Even though Taghmon were through after 3 rounds I don't think they really shot the lights in any game, not sure of you read anything into the last 2 games, Saturday will be probably show if it was a momentum killer or not, Blackwater showed seemed to mix good and bad in the group, I'm expecting another tight game maybe Taghmon by 3
Fethard v Tara Rocks- Another difficult game to call, Tara Rocks going by underage results seem like a club with ambition down the line and arguably team of the group phase, after a slow start Fethard seemed to find form as the group went on and I'm backing them to win by a point or 2
Cloughbawn v Askamore- As another poster said during the week looks to be the easiest Intermediate game to call, Askamore arguably have the in form forward in the grade in Tucker Kinsella but I think Cloughbawn have to much and might win by 8 or 9
Intermediate A Cushinstown v Davidstown- Cushinstown Ballygarrett v Martins- Based on the players Martins have lost to senior I'd slightly edge for Ballygarrett Crannford v Rosslare- Crannford after ET Monageer v New Ross- Monageer

Overall I think it's been ok, I think there are a lot of harsh yellow cards and there have been lots of sendings off which could have been avoided with a little bit of leniency.
There is 1 referee who is regularly getting senior games who would put me off going to watch a game with his carry on.
The newcomers I've seen this year have done well

By the way, that Waterford system is essentially how the "Covid Championships" here operated in both 2020 & 2021. Continuing that way was one of the options on the table when it came time to vote for structure of the 2022 Championships, but clubs voted overwhelmingly for a return to two groups of six instead.

Clare have groups of 4 and 5. I don't think anyone has as many games as us tbh. Just on the point of developing players for the Senior intercounty team, I'm not sure how having the 5 plus games with more of a gap between them would develop intercounty players better than if they are a week apart though.
