Realistically who do Glynn Barntown have to come back that will make a huge difference to them. The absence of some of their older players from senior all at once seems to be affecting them big time eg o regan, Doyle, Moore. Just shows how quick things can turn would have tipped them as a top 4 team a couple of years ago will be very lucky to stay up now. St martins overturned yesterday but ultimately they will be judged on their knockout games. Expect st Anne's to beat shels think they might come good at the right time. Ferns to beat oylegate in a close game and rapps to beat Gorey. Gorey like the martins always take their foot of the gas in the last game be interesting to see how it affects their momentum. Think martins will win comprehensively

Going to be some craic if one of these quarter finals ends in a draw and we have an outcry about playing weekend/midweek and then weekend again if they get through with Clubs reps saying they werent aware, this is unfair etc etc. tearintom (Wexford) - Posts: 1699 - 31/07/2023 15:29:04 2498096 Link 0 |

Yeah, that's another example of clubs not properly thinking about what they're actually voting for, despite being warned about what it would mean in practice. Weekend fixtures were circulated to clubs earlier this afternoon. Don't know why they're not on the website yet. Anyway, senior quarter-finals are both double headers in Wexford Park: St. Martin's v Crossabeg/Ballymurn - Saturday 5 p.m. Naomh Eanna v Rapparees - Saturday 7 p.m. Ferns v Oylegate/Glenbrien - Sunday 5 p.m. St. Anne's v Shels - Sunday 7 p.m. The fixtures also confirm that a replay of a Saturday match would be the following Tuesday, and replay of a Sunday match would be on the Wednesday. Was debated at length at Convention / County Board meeting .. Fixtures Committee stressed that they didn't want replays for the exact reason outlined that if a team draws after extra time in a Q/F or S/F then they would potentially be out on a Tue/ Wed and then the winner the following weekend .. Very few club delegates wanted penalties and were willing to take the chance of a replay. So yes it will be very interesting and I'd be very surprised if at least one of Q/F in some grade doesn't go to a replay .. That said alot of U21 players were involved in games at weekend, games on a Wed night and games the following weekend so what do you do!

I cannot for the life of me think how it would be to play 3 championship games in a week. You could not possibly recover in that length, its hard enough in 7 days. StoreysTash (Wexford) - Posts: 2172 - 01/08/2023 09:55:25 2498270 Link 0 |

The clubs didn't want penalties so that's what we have now.

Agree StoreysTash but no different to putting the under 21 championship in middle of adult championship - Clubs with small numbers and that have a lot of under 21's on their adult team had to play 5 championship games in 14 days !!!

Far too late now to make a change. In any event, the two alternatives you suggest aren't actually allowed for in the Rule Book, and would have to go all the way to National Congress to be approved. Might sound harsh, but this is a case of the clubs having made their bed, and now they'll maybe have to lie in it. Pikeman96 (Wexford) - Posts: 4052 - 01/08/2023 11:31:08 2498309 Link 0 |

Worth pointing out too that replays would apply even in the case of a County Final finishing level after extra time. Pikeman96 (Wexford) - Posts: 4052 - 01/08/2023 11:34:16 2498311 Link 0 |

And the reason that the only players left playing u21 are also playing adult is because u20/21 has been treated as a sideshow for years and therefore after u17/18s players who do not want to play adult have given the game up. U21 was on a knockout this year - whats the point in a lad continuing to play if they are 17/18 if all they get is a couple of games for the year. When will clubs relaise they are their own worst enemies when it comes to retaining players in the game.

I 100% agree with you. Clubs in a whole lot of cases really dont have a clue what theyre voting for and have this attitude that ah sure they'll just change things down the line if its an issue. Clubs just singularly vote for what benefits them and nothing else whether thats good or bad for the GAA overall in the county they couldnt care less. I do wonder whether clubs should be allowed vote at all on certain things at all. tearintom (Wexford) - Posts: 1699 - 01/08/2023 13:31:23 2498345 Link 0 |

Yup. I strongly suspect that in this particular case, clubs didn't really believe that there'd have to be midweek replays and the next round just a few days later, and instead told themselves "ah, they wouldn't really do that, they'd find a way to put in an extra week somehow". But simple fact is that there are no extra weeks available. Championships have to be played week on week if all's to be finished in time for football champions to play in Leinster. Putting things back a week would mean no football teams in Leinster, and clubs were 100% against that idea. Only other alternative would be to put in an extra week for a hurling replay, but then have to fix an entire round of midweek football fixtures to make up for it. So you'd be putting out every club in the county for the sake of the two clubs involved in the replay. And not only that, but to have midweek fixtures in late August/early September, you'd either have to start no later than 6.30 p.m. or else have every fixture in a floodlit venue. Then if you get another replay in a semi-final and maybe even a final as well, you'd have to do a second or maybe even a third round of midweek football fixtures. Simply not feasible. Not sure what your point is zinny.... 17/18 year old should be getting plenty of minor games.... then almost every club has 2nd,third teams when they leave that grade. It was treated like a sideshow this year too as teams didn't field and pulled out because of the timing. Putting under 20/21 in the middle of adult championship is not the answer and it won't be finished until October/November anyway.

In fairness to Zinny, he was talking about lads after U17/U18 who don't want to play adult, or who presumably aren't up to it yet. And while he has a point, those lads are probably very much in the minority. Most players are well able to step up to the adult grades, particularly now that minor is back to U18. But overall, I've said it before, and I'll say it again....U19/U20/U21 has always been a problem grade, and always will be: - Can't play it early in the year as clubs would be without their inter-county U20 players - Can't play it in May/June due to college exams and Leaving Cert - Play it midweek during the adult championships in July/August/September, and you get what happened this year, and lots of other years too - Only other option is to not even start it until late October or November, and then hear complaints about "terrible making those lads wait all year for a match". Whole thing is farcical. Clubs training for up to 5 months for a championship that is 5 weeks long. Doesn't sit right with a lot of people. countyman2022 (Wexford) - Posts: 1093 - 01/08/2023 16:45:01 2498405 Link 0 |

Should u21 be for players not playing adult hurling only? It might help player retention and keep those slipping away involved. Could be 13 a side to help clubs field. ExiledInWex (Dublin) - Posts: 1635 - 01/08/2023 16:45:21 2498406 Link 0 |

Totally agree I made the point to Beano when they complained about them being on in midweek during championship that if they were played later in the year people would give out the games being in bad weather, he never replied.
