Fair assessment there. The 1st half of the Taghmon Blackwater game was particularly poor. There was a swirling gusty breeze, that was more noticeable out on the pitch that I think didn't help all the players on both sides as regards shooting. Both freetakers missed a couple of frees which would be unusual for Doyle and Lillis. Mossy Murphy looked very strong for Blackwater. I suppose the quality of Stephen O'Gorman and Cathal Doyle up front, coupled with some great defending from the 6 backs is what made the difference for Taghmon in the end. 4 1 point wins this season now!

Only solution to that problem is have smaller groups and less group games then.

If we went back to alternate weeks most of our club players will be playing and training in a completely different sport between their hurling games. How exactly will that improve their hurling, first touch, speed, intensity etc?

I think it reflects where our Senior championship is at. And reinforces the view that one of the reasons our Senior intercounty team is poor is because of the apparent reluctance to look at players playing in Intermediate and Intermediate A, who have had more success in Leinster than their big name counterparts in the Senior championship. It's a fact that it's many years since the Intermediate Hurling Champions went straight back down. Viking66 (Wexford) - Posts: 20706 - 07/08/2023 15:00:31 2499384 Link 0 |

Antrim always have had. That's why they have a better record in the All Ireland club championship than we have.

Wexford clubs voted for this structure, as was discussed a few pages back. ExiledInWex (Dublin) - Posts: 1635 - 07/08/2023 16:02:54 2499395 Link 0 |

Is being poor in the Leinster club championship all that important?

Again, the long gap doesn't stop Ballygunner!! I don't think the split season is the best format but it's not the cause of poor hurlers. Waterford have a split season with four groups of 3. As someone pointed out here recently, what our CLUBS have pushed for isn't workable and if any of the semi finals end in a draw then it'll be chaos!

Players selected for intercounty, underage or Senior, or play Fitzgibbon are playing hurling near enough all year round. For everyone else the Leagues have to be given more priority. Maybe clubs could be incentivised by prizes being offered to division winners, and penalised for not fielding at all, either by themselves or combined with other clubs if they don't have the numbers.

If they didn't put the effort in to their championship they likely wouldn't still be Waterford champions. Plenty of other clubs gunning for them!!!

Spot on SMR. Our clubs have largely performed poorly on the National stage since the 60s. Our best 3 teams who have won most of the Wexford club hurling championships in the period when there were Leinster and AI club championships, Rathnure, Buffers Alley and Oulart, have won 1 solitary AI club title in well over 50 years. And less said the better about how we have fared at football.

I've seen this referee before. It's funny that he is mentioned here. He did one of our matches and everyone said how great a job he did. He actually sent off one of our players but came over after the match explained why he had to send him off, shock hands and that was the end of it. Let the game flow aswell for both sides, very impressed.

How many times have those Intermediate champions who didn't go straight back down actually go down the year or two before they came back up?? Other than Crossabeg it's basically been yo yo up and down .

Was in Bellfield on Saturday, Eoin Whelan was outstanding. Definitely one to be involved in the county senior setup next year.
