Replying To tearintom: "Yet we put our county players into a situation know where they are risking more injury by playing week after week without a break because of said split season? Rather than the opportunity of giving these players a break if they so wish, even if they still dont want to play football surely thats of more benefit, no? If Lee Chin doesnt want to play football this system puts him at more risk.
We have a situation where we have 3 clubs who won football County Championships in 2022 and didnt bother to put a team in this years football league. Off the top of my head teams who pulled out of the football league that would have played in 2022 include, Davidstown, Oilgate, Shamrocks, Fethard, Blackwater, Buffers Alley and Bunclody.
Most clubs are generally inclined one way or another with a lot of clubs being stronger in either code, thats always been the way and the players generally follow suit, the preference may not be strong but most players i know will have a preference in playing one code over the other. As i say it may not be a huge pull either way but even a lot of clubs who operate at the same level still pull towards one code. Most club players are inclined towards one code than the other." So what if they don't want to enter the football league ...Some amount of BS been thrown up about the existing structure..... yes it's condensed but what other issues are there?? At least club players know now when it'll start / stop and club players that are not on county panels are not putting their whole life on hold from January - October because of 20 county players and the success of Wexford. Yes if someone gets injured they miss a lot but how many has this happened to and injuries' happen all the time and it's the same for every club that enters championship across every grade.
Previously the situation was club players were at the mercy of county team and you'd be telling your partner, friends etc. that if Wexford win I can go away next weekend or go to that wedding but if they lose I can't as "we are out in championship". I know a lot of clubs including actually asked players (imagine that!!?!?) what they wanted and it was the players that voted for existing structure. Why Definite season/calendar regardless of Wexford success (For dual and single code players) 5 meaningful championship games in good weather Not trying to peak fitness wise twice in a year as was previous case when play round in may and then nothing until August Week on week games (which some on here seem to think is an issue - they would be training week on week anyway) One player that plays both said that hurling & football are 2 totally different games but need to be hurling all the time
Agree the league needs to be competitive but what's the solution ?? People saying that league was brilliant years ago...yeah playing league games in December (which happened ) to get them finished was great fun...At the end of the day at the start of each year every team wants to win their grade in championship. And I know for a fact a lot of players are delighted with current structure.

Replying To tearintom: "Just to clarify when i say the amount of games is too much i mean in the context of the shortened season where there is literally 16 weeks with no breaks for a dual player whereas a single code player could find themselves done within 5. Throw in the fact we now also have thrown in 4 u21 club games in the middle its like i said, an excercise in making a mockery of player welfare.
This problem has been brought on by the CPA which effectively exited stage left after creating this problem, this idea where its a good thing that we literally ban club players from playing meaningful games for the best part of 7 months of the year and then ask that they shoehorn in a club championship at some stage to ensure qualification for the provincial club championships!!
As i alluded to before its great to get as many games as possible in but we cant just create time and space out of nowhere unless the clubs actually start realising everything theyre voting for.
We reached al AI semi final in 19 which according to the CPA means the club players are going to be put out so much by this, cant organise a holiday etc we played the same system club system in 19 as we do know and the championship finished 13 days later than what this years will, we could do that because of being allowed play in march/April, however thanks to the GAA national split season we cant.
To be fair thats not a Wexford problem. It isnt a case of wanting less, but with the window we have what can we do?" The CPA wanted fixture certainty for club players so they could plan their years. And that's what they have now for the first time in over 20 years. The problems arose with the greed for more inter county games. If we go back to having max 6, instead of 8 or 9, championship intercounty games for any county in a given year there would be less calendar problems. But most of us, including me, wanted more Intercounty games. We are all part of the problem. And the current system is the solution that people agreed. Ideally players could be released back to their clubs for 2 weeks every month between March and September, and then the county club championships could be finished in October, in time for the provincial club championships. But then players playing for a top club in a top county might be playing every weekend from January til December. THE PROBLEM IS THAT THERE ARE TOO MANY GAMES THESE DAYS.

But im fairly sure its more of an incentive knowing that they might actually be playing championship games in July/August in football as compared to not kicking a ball until September dont you think?
As i said at the time that was an actual point raised by some of these clubs, that they didnt see the point in playing league football with such a gap between the league and championship. It was also a point that was raised at a subsequent football development committee meeting by reps from other clubs.
I mean i know of a football only club who didnt even train for this years league due to the gap to the championship.
Listen we can go back and forth on this all day (ps dont sit up till 1am on a forum arguing with username, not good for the head that :) but the idea that this current system is "cherishing our dual status" as was being made in the original post simply isnt the case imho.
I mean at the very least a club should have time to celebrate a championship win but as will probably the case in most of our grades this year they wont! Whats the point of it all?" ps dont sit up till 1am on a forum arguing with username, not good for the head that :)
Great Advice : )

Tough on the annes given what has happened over the last week. Thought Aidan Rochford was impressive for the Annes . What age is he now? Hopefully those 3 young lads push on and get more game time with Wexford next season

You could tell the Annes really werent on it, understandable really but it was a battle and to be fair to the Harriers they battled hard.
Its tough on both Clubs but what can we do as things stand?

Shiel looked very small and light any time I saw him play this year and didn't execute under pressure. Scallans hurling was pretty scrappy. All 3 have promise for sure but none looked like Senior intercounty players yet.

Will finish my contributions on this particular topic by making the same suggestion to you as I often make to people who seem to only see problems - come up with a proposed solution, bring it to your club and get support there so that it can be brought to county level, and then if it's good enough, it should get support there too.

I played in the Leagues myself as far back as 30 years ago, and even then, they were very much a secondary competition.
The only times I ever remember the Leagues being taken any way seriously was during the years when the championships were straight knock-outs, so you could be gone after just one match, and the Leagues were the only way you'd be sure of having a number of matches in a year.
And I don't think there'd be many in favour of going back to a straight knock-out championship just to improve the competitiveness of a secondary competition.

And we have done, and supported different structures, i still happen to think the Horeswood one (from memory i think it was them) was one of the better ones where they suggested interval blocks during the group stages, think blocks of 3 weeks and then blocks of 2 weeks which is then followed by playing one code to completion (quarter/semi/final) and then the other code to completion.
Personally think its one that is a good blend of both approaches.

IMHO far too many intercounty games and intercounty should not hold a monopoly for over 50% of the year

You should add that proposed solutions also need people to be willing to accept changes. I see entrenched but also populist views on so many issues in the GAA. People who in July want the All-Ireland in September will also moan if the club county finals are played in November when November comes around. People who want wider participation in hurling would die if a proposal which replaced the Munster round robin with a 2 x groups of 6 with relegation and promotion was the solution to improving hurling in Dublin, Offaly, Kildare, Westmeath. Its easy to be armed with popular soundbites, one particular pundit comes out swinging in 5 minutes on the radio every Friday with punishment beatings for the GAA without solutions.

I saw storeysstash making a case for the club player to have designated weeks throughout the year, from somebody who I gather was a recent player. It was not perfect, but how can Wexford expect to develop good players with 5-6 weeks of DECENT hurling per year? Dublin is even worse the championship won't start until the end of next month. I know the AI football final has something to do with that but even if Dublin were knocked out a month ago that would be the case. "IMHO far too many intercounty games and intercounty should not hold a monopoly for over 50% of the year" - NAILED IT. Either spread out the games and have a later final with club windows, or reduce the amount of games. I showed in my reply to that other thread that it can be done. But it'll need co operation of diktat managers who seem to have all the cards.

As matter of interest what way would you run the Wexford club champ next year if you had clean slate and inter county stays same as is.?
When was there ever a situation where club players were putting their lives on hold from January to October?? When did you play champ ??? When there were four rounds of champ in april/may so you were back slogging in Jan or in some cases December. and then nothing until ... you didn't know until when .... when wexford out of champ so you couldn't' plan anything...and then it was 10 straight weeks in a row anyway

You're missing the point - couldn't go in May as that was club month and it was the not knowing when you'd be out after that was the killer....oh if the footballers lose but hurlers win there might be a round of champ that week as team you are playing has 3 lads on football panel but no one on hurling panel...... at least they know now - sure Paudie even had his flights back from Oz booked as him along with everyone else knew when champ would be starting.... Also if you only play one code now you could go before football starts or when hurling over etc.
IMHO far too many intercounty games and intercounty should not hold a monopoly for over 50% of the year AGREE 100% and I even think the Fitz/Sigerson need to be got rid of, condensed or restructured as it's only the intercounty players involved too/b]

And I know for a fact a lot of players are delighted with current structure." And i know for a fact a lot of players arent, hence the fact that after 1 year of the current structure the support at convention for it has dropped considerably as per the 2022 convention. When was there ever a situation where club players were putting their lives on hold from January to October?? But i mean it has made a huge change in Wexford, i mean previously if you wanted to go on holiday/wedding/weekend away etc during the summer months and not miss a championship game for your club in hurling or football your only real option was to holiday in May or June and as things stand if you want to take a summer holiday/wedding/weekend away etc and not miss a championship game during the summer months your options have changed signifcantly to ..........ehmm May or June!! But i think you are actually missing the point, we can still have defined seasons etc but why the need to effectively ban a Club player from playing championship games for 6/7 months of the year and then in the case of a single code hurler/footballer give him a sum total of a whole 5/6 weeks of hurling!! How is that going to help develop players? IMHO far too many intercounty games and intercounty should not hold a monopoly for over 50% of the year" Single code hurlers or footballers are in a massive minority in the county. Would they even make up 10% of players? And the Leagues are what are supposed to provide club players who don't play intercounty with games to play. If clubs choose not to enter them then those clubs are the problem as regards the players missing out on games. Not the format.

Anyway, back to the championship at hand.
Looking at the games whats effectively on the line? Its funny looking at the change in the rules where more than 2 teams finish level and hearing a bit of kick back/whinge from clubs in regards to the rule change, it feeds into my belief that clubs dont even know what theyre voting for
Effectively theres something on the line for every team in group part from the Martins and Naomh Eanna. Annes are safe from relegation but not guaranteed a QF spot, meanwhile any of Oilgate/Glynn and the Harriers can find themselves in the QF/5th or in relegation
Not much on the line really in group B apart from an effective relegation semi final, other 2 games are effective dead rubbers.
Same in Intermediate group A only 1 game that effectively matters out of 3, in group B 2 out of the 3 have something riding on it, Horeswood already in relegation
Intermediate A group A is the same, only 1 dead rubber tbf and the same in the other group.
Junior also has something riding on 4 out of the 6 games
Junior A is more or less done really in group A , Glynn are in dire straits but Group B has somethign riding on each game.
I could be wrong but in terms of dead rubbers i think this year has seen an improvement?

How is that going to help develop players? IMHO far too many intercounty games and intercounty should not hold a monopoly for over 50% of the year" I agree 100% with you here. But it'll need co operation of diktat managers who seem to have all the cards."]Definitely need less intercounty games if we change the format to allow club games between the intercounty games.

In at the park last night, first of all conditions absolutely terrible and fair play to both teams who put in a serious shift!!! Harriers I thought should have been abit more ahead at half time chin missed a good few frees and harriers hit slot of wides too!!! Harriers seemed to be working that bit harder out working the Anne's all over the field,I think they got there match ups right Kyle Scallan on Liam og and Cormac Byrne on Dee did well,Richie kehoe was sweeping and was everywhere rolling back the years!!! For Anne's I thought Rochford as sweeper was good also whoever was hurling on chin can't think of his name now but he put in a good shift both days!!! With the new change with rules, with 3 teams finishing on same points it looks like it's harriers or barntown who will be in relegation!! Tough Goin on them if it works out that 3 teams finish on same points they will be in relegation

Replying To Afinestick: "Thought Harriers work rate was extremely impressive in tough conditions. Tough on the annes given what has happened over the last week. Thought Aidan Rochford was impressive for the Annes . What age is he now? On the Harriers side Lee Chin was impressive as always while Kyle Scallan , Josh Sheil and Conall Clancy showed a lot of promise. Hopefully those 3 young lads push on and get more game time with Wexford next season" Aidan is 31/32.
