Huge game between Oulart and Rathnure at weekend. Both at historical lows atm. I actually think the Oulart team that did get relegated is a better team than the current one. But still crazy to see them play what is essentially a relegation semi final. Remember saying even if Oulart came up straight away to senior they weren't safe. Them winning last year was almost like they were up from intermediate forever and they didn't deserve to be down there, while that's great and builds the whole team up for getting back up there, the same issues are there that lead to them being down there, no one goes down without deserving it. Not a dig at one of the great hurling clubs of Ireland, still fancy them to best rathnure. Rathnure have been close to the relegation trap door more than not the last 8 years or so. Think I've mentioned a bit how I don't think they've adjusted to modern demands of hurling at club level not to mind some of their lads not feeling it for county level either, seems to be behind in fitness levels and conditioning over the last few years. Already said all the before and don't want to be repetitive in critisms of them, it's only hurling and not the be all and end all of life. This game and the Glynn v Olygate games are the biggest of the weekend, most other games are just about where they finish in the 1-4 quarter final draws. Yet we put our county players into a situation know where they are risking more injury by playing week after week without a break because of said split season? Rather than the opportunity of giving these players a break if they so wish, even if they still dont want to play football surely thats of more benefit, no? If Lee Chin doesnt want to play football this system puts him at more risk. We have a situation where we have 3 clubs who won football County Championships in 2022 and didnt bother to put a team in this years football league. Off the top of my head teams who pulled out of the football league that would have played in 2022 include, Davidstown, Oilgate, Shamrocks, Fethard, Blackwater, Buffers Alley and Bunclody. Most clubs are generally inclined one way or another with a lot of clubs being stronger in either code, thats always been the way and the players generally follow suit, the preference may not be strong but most players i know will have a preference in playing one code over the other. As i say it may not be a huge pull either way but even a lot of clubs who operate at the same level still pull towards one code. Most club players are inclined towards one code than the other. tearintom (Wexford) - Posts: 1699 - 26/07/2023 15:09:16 2497097 Link 0 |

For TearinTom's benefit, on his claim that more and more clubs aren't even entering the Football League any more... https://hoganstand.com/Forum/FindPost?MessageID=2468607 link It's a post I put up back at the start of April to show that this simply isn't true. The post was actually aimed at him at the time as well, but maybe he either missed it or has chosen to ignore it. Pikeman96 (Wexford) - Posts: 4052 - 26/07/2023 16:12:48 2497113 Link 0 |

I often wonder about that point - knowing what you have to do before you go into the final game - in a group of 6 where the lowest goes to a relegation playoff and the top four will play a QF based on where they come in the group, there is only one team where the the result means nothing. How relevant is this argument anymore.

it was always week on week on week pre intercounty split season too from July or August right up to October, I think in 2017 before the April club month came into being, St Martins reached both Senior finals played 14 weekends in a row, that year we got to the hurling league semi final so there was only time for 1 round of club action in each code in May between the National League and championship, the thing that makes Wexford different from most counties in the single code players are the minority.

Agree most players would prefer one or other but most players would prefer to play both than only play one. By a large majority . I looked back through our posts and another thing we seem to agree on is that there are too many games for the amount of time we have to play them. But the clubs almost unanimously voted to keep the 2 groups of 6 set up. I do think the standard of hurling and football has improved in our championships with the split season. Because most players are dual players you would expect that to be the case, as they are able to concentrate on one code at a time. Also our football champions seem to be doing better in Leinster as a result as they are playing only football in the run up to the Leinsters. Likely if we alternated football and hurling 1st our hurling champions might do better in the years hurling came second. As regards teams not entering League teams did Pikeman not already point out that most of the same clubs didn't enter the League pre split season championship? No i seen it but even your post confirms less teams are entering so what was the point in replying? As i said in my reply today there are less teams playing league football than there were in 2022, youve basically confirmed there are less teams playing than there was in 2019 also. Yet you say its simply not true despite actually putting up proof that it is??? there are less teams playing football in 2023 than there was in 2022 and there are less teams playing in 2023 than there was in 2019 but not to the same extent. So which is it? tearintom (Wexford) - Posts: 1699 - 26/07/2023 16:23:32 2497120 Link 0 |

Okay, I see now that you're comparing 2023 to 2022 as regards the Football League, while I was making a different comparison in that other post. But still, your statement of "we have 3 clubs who won football County Championships in 2022 and didnt bother to put a team in this years football league" is a little disingenuous. The three involved are Fethard (intermediate champions last year), Buffers Alley (Junior 'A) and Oulart-The Ballagh (Junior 'B'). Fethard didn't enter because of how they were still in Leinster and All-Ireland competition until January. Basically, while others had a break from October through to January of February, they decided to take a similar length of break from January onwards. Buffers Alley haven't entered the Football League in donkey's years, and to the best of my knowledge, Oulart-The Ballagh have never entered it. The split season and the consequent long wait between League finishing and championship starting is hardly the reason they didn't enter it this year either. Have been senior since 1941 - they won the Junior Championship of 1940 (was no intermediate at the time), and so entered the senior championship the following year. They've never been relegated.

All runs come to an end Tearintom. It's a cyclical thing. Adamstown won 11 Senior hurling titles between the 20s and 40s and are now in an Intermediate relegation final again. Buffers Alley and Oulart, the next 2 most successful clubs after Rathnure with 12 and 13 wins, both have been relegated after prolonged periods of success also.

But true, No? The fact is we have less teams and players playing football in the space of a year. We can debate whether the split season is the sole/main/partial cause or not, that's a matter of opinion. The original post I replied to was on about cherishing our dual status equally when in reality it hasn't. And imho coupled with the sheer amount of games involved is doing nothing in helping us develop players for our county teams, it's an excercise that makes a mockery of the idea of player welfare. tearintom (Wexford) - Posts: 1699 - 26/07/2023 16:58:51 2497142 Link 0 |

Thank god someone on here speaking sense. I put up a post ages ago which showed a lot less teams participating now on the league over the last few years. Football league is getting worse ever year. A player gets injured and that's it. Gone for for rest of championship. Our club plays both codes but I know most players in our club would prefer alternative weekends. Be interesting to see at the end of the year for the Wexford GAA congress

@tearintom - you're missing the point in all sorts of ways, but I'm not about to start explaining them at this hour of the night (it's roughly 1 a.m. as I type). Pikeman96 (Wexford) - Posts: 4052 - 27/07/2023 01:04:28 2497194 Link 0 |

Good win for the harriers last night scrappy game by all accounts but they got the two points in bad conditions. 3 day turnaround for both teams will be a big ask. However lots of permutations on the line should be an action packed weekend in all grades WexMurph (Wexford) - Posts: 369 - 27/07/2023 08:58:51 2497211 Link 0 |

Just to clarify when i say the amount of games is too much i mean in the context of the shortened season where there is literally 16 weeks with no breaks for a dual player whereas a single code player could find themselves done within 5. Throw in the fact we now also have thrown in 4 u21 club games in the middle its like i said, an excercise in making a mockery of player welfare. This problem has been brought on by the CPA which effectively exited stage left after creating this problem, this idea where its a good thing that we literally ban club players from playing meaningful games for the best part of 7 months of the year and then ask that they shoehorn in a club championship at some stage to ensure qualification for the provincial club championships!! As i alluded to before its great to get as many games as possible in but we cant just create time and space out of nowhere unless the clubs actually start realising everything theyre voting for. We reached al AI semi final in 19 which according to the CPA means the club players are going to be put out so much by this, cant organise a holiday etc we played the same system club system in 19 as we do know and the championship finished 13 days later than what this years will, we could do that because of being allowed play in march/April, however thanks to the GAA national split season we cant. To be fair thats not a Wexford problem. It isnt a case of wanting less, but with the window we have what can we do? tearintom (Wexford) - Posts: 1699 - 27/07/2023 09:27:10 2497212 Link 0 |

Ive no idea. But im fairly sure its more of an incentive knowing that they might actually be playing championship games in July/August in football as compared to not kicking a ball until September dont you think? As i said at the time that was an actual point raised by some of these clubs, that they didnt see the point in playing league football with such a gap between the league and championship. It was also a point that was raised at a subsequent football development committee meeting by reps from other clubs. I mean i know of a football only club who didnt even train for this years league due to the gap to the championship. Listen we can go back and forth on this all day (ps dont sit up till 1am on a forum arguing with username, not good for the head that :) but the idea that this current system is "cherishing our dual status" as was being made in the original post simply isnt the case imho. I mean at the very least a club should have time to celebrate a championship win but as will probably the case in most of our grades this year they wont! Whats the point of it all? tearintom (Wexford) - Posts: 1699 - 27/07/2023 09:56:33 2497218 Link 0 |

Too right, the CPA got the split season which has now made it even worse for the club player. The new setup only works in counties where there is only 1 game, Liam Griffin must not have thought of his own county when forcing his agenda through and how it was going to impact. I proposed on other page a solution to have club weeks all year. I don't think it would happen, but something has to be done to end this madness for the clubs, even if it is better than what went before.
