Replying To alwaysasub:  "Cloughbawn bet the Alley well and are looking like they will bounce straight back up again. No one seems to be getting close to them in intermediate at the minute. Fethard finally seemed to click giving Gusserane a good beating at the weekend and if they defeat Horeswood this coming weekend, could be looking towards a quarter final spot with having done little hurling in their first two games. Taghmon and Tara Rocks leading the way in the other group but I think the opposite group looks far stronger with Cloughbawn, alley and fethard all potential semi finalists with maybe Tara Rocks.

Horeswood looked poor again at the weekend.Normally teams that come up from Intermediate A do well but I think at the minute there is a bit of a step up, no different to an intermediate team going to senior. I would have had Adamstown as certs to go down but they put up a strong performance against Tara Rocks. So it's looking like them and Horeswood in the relegation final. Adamstown seem to always come good in those matches tight matches."
Cloughbawn look to be the team to beat alright, but don't be surprised to see Taghmon, St James, Buffers Alley go close also. Fethard are ultimately missing too many of their main men in my opinion. The main thing for the teams in the other division is to avoid a quarter final v Cloughbawn or Buffers Alley. Tara Rocks v St James looks like being the key game in that division that will determine who meets who in a quarter final.

My current view on the championship

Senior: very hard to be overly confident on a particular team winning it this year, I think there's 5 teams you could make a strong argument for them winning. I was keen enough on Gorey up to the weekend and despite getting bet by the Martin's I would still back them. I think either of them will win it. After watching the rathnure and crossabeg last night it would be very hard to see Rathnure staying up. Oulart should beat them based on the weekends performance and I'd fancy whoever is bottom on the other side to beat them. Oylegate and Glynn in the final game will be very interesting.

Intermediate: Again you can make a good argument for a number of teams here. Although Cloughbawn would have to be most people's favourites. Tara Rocks, Taghmon and the James have all started well. They all have to play each other still so that'll give a good idea of where each team is. I thought the James were very good against Taghmon and conceded two very sloppy goals in the second half, other than that they hurled well and if they can get MOH back they will take beating. At the bottom it looks like it'll be the loser of Adamstown and Bunclody this weekend who will be in the relegation, although Adamstown seemed to hurl well against Tara Rocks the weekend I would still expect them to go down.

Like I said on the other side Cloughbawn look very good, despite have picked injurys to some key players. Fethard not winning either of their first two games was abit of a suprise, they took a while to get going the weekend but really blew Gusserane away in the second half. Hard to really know where they are at but will give anyone in the division a rattle if they click. Gusserane are blessed they beat horeswood in the first round, have been dreadful in the two games since and will struggle to pick up any more points. I think Horeswood were missing afew players the first day and have hurled ok in the two games since. I think losing that game to Gusserane will have them finish 6th but have a feeling they will stay up.

Intermediate A: I think Cushinstown would be my pick on this, that side of the group certainly looks the strongest side anyway. Beating Liam mellows the weekend was a good result. The other side doesn't look as strong hard to see either St Mary's or Geraldine's competing in the business end of it and both are currently second and third.

Junior: I think the winner will come from Group A here. St Pat's beating the Shamrocks well the weekend caught the eye, between both of them and Clongeen going well too I think it could be between them 3. The other side has 4 second teams in it, Ferns do seem to be protecting their second teams by not bringing on any subs for the seniors. Possibly that or they just ain't good enough but it will still give them a good shout. The fintans and Kilmore are always competitive enough and will be a match for anyone but I still expect the winner to come from the other side.

I wouldn't know the club scene in Wexford as well as you all would, and I don't go to club matches as a neutral I spend mid-week trawling to matches here there and everywhere with the children. I try to get away from GAA on Sunday's instead of seeing more. That might change as my children reach adult grades.

Anyway, my question. When I first moved to Wexford, clubs like Shamrocks, Duffry Rovers, Monageer, Marshalstown, Davidstown were all in or around senior hurling, or at the top in Intermediate as the club I joined back then was. Now, all are in the bottom rungs of Intermediate A and Junior. They are traditionally hurling focused clubs from what I would understand, and always seem to have decent enough underage teams with a couple of really good players. Is it just that they had well by their own standards generational teams back then and senior was 16 teams and now they are back at their normal level? Genuinely curious here, rather than trolling.

Both Adamstown and Horeswood are badly affected by lads gone travelling or injured also. Adamstown usually do well in relegation games for sure though! Cloughbawn have looked good so far. Fethard have a strong 1st 15 but might be a little light on the bench. Buffers Alley are definitely a coming team but I think this year might be too soon for them. Hard to say which group is stronger though as the clubs in each haven't played eachother yet. Last year Oulart were a good bit ahead of everyone else but people reckoned at the time the other group were stronger. But then come the QFs Askamore were the only club from that group to win their QF, and they lost their semifinal convincingly after that. We won't really know which group is stronger until the QFs this year either I'd be guessing.

I think smaller playing numbers hasn't helped most of those clubs you named, while Shamrocks have to compete with Rapps for the best hurlers in Enniscorthy. Duffry had a very good team in the 90s backboned by the Fitzhenrys. Think they are improving underage now again.

Also other clubs more traditionally thought of as football clubs have upped their game as regards hurling.

Couple of factors really.

The success of the Rapps/Starlights have definitely affected some of these clubs, notably the Shamrocks and to a lesser extent Davidstown and Marshalstown.

If you look at the areas of both parishes where theres been population growth its occurred in areas where its almost as quick to get to Bellfield as it is to get their respective pitches Farmleigh and Boolabawn. (a factor here could be not having the GAA pitch in the village which always helps imho) Also a lot of people from the town have moved outside of town and continue to bring their kids back into Bellfield. People who have moved from other areas of the country/county to these areas dont have a connection to the area and therefore again see it just as handy to bring kids to town.

Duffry are a little different, its a very remote area that hasnt had as much population growth as other areas close to Enniscorthy.

Monagear to be fair never really fell too far down the pecking order compared to others. Also when it comes to hurling particularly underage other clubs have caught up that wouldnt be called traditional hurling such as Ballyhogue in the enniscorthy area, both them and Oilgate would have probably beneffited most from people moving in to the area and settling as part of the respective clubs.

A lot of these clubs though have been making strides underage, davidstown and Monageer notably and a few green shoots up in Duffry also.

Shamrocks though are a different kettle of fish altogether, it just isnt happening but the improvement in facilities there may help in the long run.

Cheers for the update. Away for a few weeks so have seen no action at all.

Few front runners emerging but any team just a few injuries away from a bad run such is the set up.

Based only on results and not seeing a game. My picks:

Senior. Martins, shels or ferns.
Intermediate. Cloughbawn, tara rocks or taghmon.

I will narrow it down further once i see a few games this weekend.

Aint the weather a real pity. Should be great games on fine summers evenings. Instead rain and a strong breeze impacting games. Same for everyone i suppose.

I'd say Sean Nolan particularly is a big loss to them, seem to be relying on Foley and Myler for scores.

The way I'd view Senior is the Martins have the heighest ceiling as shown in the last 20 mins particularly on Saturday but in a knockout game about 5 or 6 others could beat them, Gorey have all the talent on paper but a bit like Galway at intercounty can fade out at crucial moments, Ferns are definitely in the mix again but going back to back is extremely tough, Rapps 1st 15 fit and available are very strong but lack panel depth, Shels are a contender too but might lack the marquee forward like a Rory O'Connor, Chin, McGovern, Morris etc. Annes will make the knockouts but not sure if they've the overall quality to win 3 knockout games back to back, very disappointed in the Harriers so far, their last 3 championship games last year vs Annes, Cloughbawn and Rapps they really impressed performance wise but they haven't built on it all and are way to reliant on Chin.

Have you seen many games Viking? I miss a lot of evening games as milking, Wex Facebook in fairness give great reviews of the senior games with the lads outside Sharky's. There Intermediate coverage could only be described as a joke, Two lads who haven't a clue who don't go to matches and reading notes out of a little book. Don't know players names even. Taghmon and Rocks be a right game.

A good summary tbf, I won't write as much!

Senior - Shels seem to be tipping away nicely, they'd be my pick. There are 5-6 teams capable of winning it, but am going to side with the Shels.
Rathnure for the drop, reputation can't keep a club Senior forever.

Intermediate - Always a tricky grade. Cloughbawn are flying, and clear favourites. I'm going to go with St James to spring a surprise in this grade though. They seem to be getting good results and are without Matt O'H to date. If he gets back for knockout stages they could be dangerous. Adamstown will probably relegate someone, Horeswood maybe.

Inter A - St Martins are flying and probably won't lose too many to Senior team. I'm going to predict a local derby here though for a final. New Ross v Cushinstown. That would be fiesty, with Ross maybe to shade it.

Junior - Knowledge here would be average, but I'm going to predict a first team will win this grade. St Pats and Shamrocks should go close, while Clongeen are flying it. However, I think Kilmore are a good side, and might take all the beating.

I get to a couple every weekend but it's hard at this time of year as I'd have lots of bike runs all over the country to go on also.
I did say to Michael after the 1st show that he should print out the stuff bigger and get the camera man to hold it by the camera, so it looks like he knows the stuff. In fairness to him it's great that Intermediate is getting any coverage at all, and with him being from Gorey and the other lad from Enniscorthy they are having to learn about the grade as they go along. The 2nd show was definitely better. Haven't watched this week's yet.
Looking forward to the Rocks game. Whoever wins is guaranteed 1st place. Not sure exactly will both teams go all out to win it though as both are qualified and both could meet in the knockout stages. That decision would be up to the 2 managers.

Shamrocks have a great set up now, and in a county full of grounds in idyllic locations with a view, ironically their ground in the middle of a town is one with one of the best views! I'm heading up there this evening for an underage game hopefully the rain stops! Their u12s are undefeated in 6 hurling and football games this year, winning 5 and drawing 1, so they must be doing something right up there!
