Tailteann Cup 2022

Replying To Onion Breath:  "Am I right in thinking that if Tipp beat Limerick and assuming Kerry beat Cork, then Cork will be into Tailteann Cup? Or if Cavan beat Donegal or if by chance Leitrim beat Galway?

In fact just to stretch this, could Galway end up in it if they lost to Leitrim (I know) as well if Cavan meath and Derry get to their provincial finals?"
No only Division 3 and 4 can play in Tailteann this year.

There will just be more teams in the Sam Maguire draw (preliminary round considered for this)

Next year though that would a possibility - though on a seeded basis. So teams who badly in division 2 but not get relegated might get shunted out if a Div 3 or 4 team make provincial final.

No! Teams from division 1 or 2 do not go into Tailteann Cup. Also teams from division 3 or 4 that reach a provincial final do not go into Tailteann Cup.

What is the craic with the name? Who or what was Tailteann?

In Bronze Age Ireland, large sporting gatherings known as funeral games were held. These were athletic competitions held to honour a recently deceased person. The name Tailteann derives from the Aonach Tailteann (the Tailtin Fair) held in the townload of Teltown in County Meath. According to the Annals of the Kingdom of Ireland, the fair was established by the legendary king Lugh Lámhfhada (reigned 1849 to 1809 BC) in honour of his foster-mother, Tailtiu.

The Tailteann Games were re-established just after independence as a sport championships for Irish people or those with Irish ancestry. They were held across Ireland in 1924, 1928 and 1932. Launched to celebrate independence, the Games were first announced in 1921 but due to the Civil War the Games were postponed until August of 1924.

In 1924 and 1928, the Tailteann Games were held shortly after the Summer Olympics, allowing athletes that had participated in Paris (1924) and Amsterdam (1928) to compete. Additionally, some Olympic athletes who were not of Irish ancestry were invited to compete to increase the competition and attract audiences. The Tailteann Games were held in various venues across Ireland, centred in Croke Park. Events were held in athletics swimming and other aquatic sports, rowing, boxing, rounders, yachting, golf, tennis, gymnastics, wrestling, weight-lifting, billiards, chess, Gaelic football, hurling, handball and camogie. There were events beyond sport too, with Irish dancing, music, painting, crafts, writing and storytelling competitions.

In the 1930s there was less will to continue with the Tailteann Games. In 1937, a committee was formed to explore the possibility of holding further games, but with the beginning of World War II, the games never took place again.

The cup is named after those ancient games.

The full 17 teams won't be known until Sunday 15th May. So far 13 teams known in Tailteann Cup (link), and the 4 remaining teams likely to be Cavan and Leitrim on Sunday 8th, Tipperary on Saturday 14th and Cavan on Sunday 15th (assuming all lose their respective games). The one pre-lim game is on 21st may and first round games are then on 28th May. So draw might be on evening of 15th or morning of 16th May I guess?

Donie Kingston is to be back for the Tailteann Cup. Hogan Stand article. Wise people recognise the currency of qualifying for the Sam Maguire group stage.

Some Diwn player spouting nonsense that he's only interested in playing for Sam.
Him and his team are in Tailteann for a reason.

"I want to be in an All-Ireland, and we need to be in that situation, we need to get ourselves back into the stage where we can compete for competitions, and obviously we're not doing that at this moment in time."
The funny thing is that if they challenge for the Tailteann Cup, they will be competing for a competition. It will also qualify them for the Sam Maguire 2023 group stage! Some people need help joining the dots!!

He's entitled to his opinion. Which was All Ireland series qualifier carries a lot more interest to players, Managers and supporters than Tailteann Cup.

Yes I read that interview and it was a lot of rambling about nothing. Surely it's all about representing your county as best you can in whatever competition it's in. It always baffels me why the so called weaker counties are so against a competition they might have a chance of winning. They would rather take a hammering in provincial championship than play at their own level. Surely its better to build up a bit of confidence by winning a few games than been beaten badly. If they want to compete at a higher level then get into division 2 and prove your good enough

For the one week that most counties will be in it.
Div 3 and 4 teams are better off away from the qualifiers.

Ah its better to be playing for sam though when your wearing your county gear around the place. That's what really matters.

The dots join up to ensure the gap in standards between the stronger and weaker counties will get wider. A couple of teams fluctuating between Division 3 and 2, Tailteann and Sam Maguire, won't improve the standards of the bottom 14 counties, playing the same poor standard of football in league and championship.

But in recent times there's been players leaving once their team goes out in the qualifiers. So thr idea of them not wanting to play in a second teir doesn't wash either.

It's easier for some to try and claim their not getting fair treatment. What some within these counties actually want is for it to be made easier for them to play at a higher level than actually improving themselves.

Sadly there are plenty in smaller counties like my own who would rather have the instant gratification of one surprise win in Leinster once in a blue moon, than be in a second tier competition which might enable progression and which they might aspire to win within someones lifetime. It is baffling. Longford reached the Leinster semi final stage only twice since 1970 (See link).... I mean seriously, it's a dead duck for us!!! Seems like a form of Stockholm syndrome to defend the tradition of the Leinster Championship (despite the hammerings) but complain about the futility or flaws of a secondary competition like the Tailteann Cup. You see the same odd reaction to language like 'relegated' or 'down to' when talking about Tailteann v Sam Maguire, as if people might combust if confronted by the reality of some counties being on a different level than others (i.e. the literal structure of the league). It's an odd combination of cognitive dissonance and memory loss.

Louth 5 -10 Meath 4-13 Kildare 2-22 Dublin 1-24 Cavan 1 - 20 Meath 4 - 13
Carlow 0-10 Louth 0-12 Louth 0-12 Wexford 0-4 Antrim 0 - 10 Wicklow 1 - 12

The similarities between the hammerings dished out in any of the above games are very similar other
than the Dublin and Wexford game.
Wexford came along and beat hot favourites Offaly by 1 - 15 to 1 - 12 Dublin then hammered by
Wexford 1 - 24 to 0- 04

Louth came out and hammered Carlow by 5 - 10 to 0 - 10, Kildare in turn hammered Louth by 2 - 22 to 0 - 12
Wicklow then beat a very fancied Laois by 5 - 15 to 4 - 12 and Meath thumped Wicklow by 4 - 13 to 1 - 12

Creating another competition to contain the weak and the very weak counties all 16 of them is in not way going to
improve their standard of football one little bit 16counties with similar ratings playing together throught out the year
is going to cause stalemate.

It's my view they have the cart before the horse.

Division 3 and 4 teams never give out about playing in the league. Listening to managers over the winter, they saw little in the Provincial Championship for them..
The TCup approach was tried before and failed.

Maybe at some stage there will be a culture of learning and listening rather than protecting one's own interest i.e. Provincial Councils
