Westmeath will hopefully get the handy draw to meet the winners of Meath and Wicklow and get to the Leinster final

Replying To loughree:  "Clare footballers lost last night but are into the qualifiers for the All Ireland because they are a division 2 team. Tipperary a division 4 team beat another division 4 team Waterford. Tipperary a division 4 team now play Limerick a division 3 team and the winner will at worst join Clare in the qualifiers. In the Leinster quarter final Westmeath a division 3 team beat Longford a division 3 team. Westmeath must win there Leinster semi final and reach a provincial final to qualify for the the All Ireland series. Otherwise the win over Longford means nothing. League positions are now more important than championship victories. Provincial imbalance is also a big issue as Cavan may find out. It should also be noted that the loser of Derry / Tyrone are still in the Sam Maguire race as they are both division 1/2 teams. This game is an Ulster quarter final."
Should provincial draws be based on league ranking? Should the counties who get a bye to provincial semi-finals also be based on league ranking?

Yesterdays matches showed the need for a second competition. Dublin Wexford and Roscommon Sligo both over after 20 minutes.

And quite right too that league positions are now more important - a lesson Cavan indeed do need to learn. It will be even more obvious next year when getting to a provincial final will only have major significance for Div. 3 and 4 teams as it will allow entry to the Sam Maguire. For teams already qualified via the league, being a provincial finalist will only influence the seedings in the groups.
It does mean also that a team's position in Div. 2 will be critical as, unlike this year, those near the bottom that don't get relegated can't be sure of their place in the SM until the provincial finalists are known.
What it means is that effectively next year we have the champions league model (albeit a single round-robin version with three qualifying from each group) that has been advocated for so long (it's a bit ironic considering the champions league is moving away from that model) with the Tailteann Cup being akin to the Europa League.

Replying To oneoff:  "The reasons people try to use against this are getting more and more petty. If it did cost €10 you'd say it should be €5.

And the name? No matter what it was called you and others would want it called something else."
Well what's Tailteann about? What does it mean to players in Ireland?
Call it the All Ireland Intermediate championship and be done with it.
I'm not pushed about being associated with something from Meath same as a Meath man wouldn't be fond of playing for the John Joe Reilly cup for example.
It's a national competition . Give it a National Title . End of

Tailteann is a national title and has been used as such for millennia.

The Sam Maguire is named after someone from Cork has that stopped Kerry from being "fond" of it? Same thing with the Liam Mccarthy Cup has that put off Tipp or Kilkenny? You do realise most cups are named after someone or something?

The split season will help the Tailteann Cup. In the days of the Tommy Murphy Cup, club managers would be after the inter county players to return to the club.

There's an astounding level of ignorance in your post. Closely followed by immaturity and a complete lack of knowledge of your history.

You think? I reckon you'll see much weakened teams as players take advantage of the shorter season and head west to New York, Chicago and Boston.

Some of them have already made the arrangements.

The GPA have been supportive of this structure? Fermanagh, New York and London trained this week in preparation for the Tailteann Cup??

Am I right in thinking that if Tipp beat Limerick and assuming Kerry beat Cork, then Cork will be into Tailteann Cup? Or if Cavan beat Donegal or if by chance Leitrim beat Galway?

In fact just to stretch this, could Galway end up in it if they lost to Leitrim (I know) as well if Cavan meath and Derry get to their provincial finals?

What about calling the Championships like this
The Senior A All Ireland Championship for the Sam Maguire cup#
The Senior B All Ireland Championship for the Tailteann Cup
Would that give it more of a structure

I think you answered your own question in the first sentence! Maybe time people started not to take GPA recommendations as Gospel.

Good win for your hurlers today legend. Puts them in a good enough position to make the final.

No. All Division 1 and 2 teams (for 2023) are guaranteed a spot in Sam Maguire. If a Div 3 or 4 team makes it to their provincial final and earns a spot in Sam Maguire, it's not at anyone's expense; they simply add a preliminary round to the qualifiers and leave one spot free in the Tailteann Cup.

Cork are guaranteed a qualifier spot this year. Extra qualifier spots are available this year, if a team outside the league 16 qualifiers makes a provincial final.
If Leitrim, Cavan, Tipperary and Westmeath all make their provincial finals. Only 13 teams will enter the Tailteann Cup.
