Tailteann Cup 2022

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Replying To legendzxix:  "At the start of the championship I would have seen about 12 counties capable of winning a provincial championship and 12 counties capable of winning the Tailteann Cup. The GAA seem to have found the right boundary point.
12 counties with a low league ranking have a realistic possibility of being in the All-Ireland group stage next year. When people see the reality of that reward, they will want to be a part of it."
As someone from a traditional strong county, why do you think weaker counties finding it so difficult to make a breakthrough; is it a lack of tradition, belief, money, structure or all of the above? And do you think a team winning the Tailteann cup could go on to win an All Ireland or not a chance it will ever happen?

I think it's a bit of everything. But it really comes down to county boards at the end of the day.

I've used Kerry and hurling as an example before but I would say it's similar elsewhere. They'll gladly take funding etc that's supposed to be used for hurling but how much is actually used?

I would say in some counties where hurling is the main focus it happens as well.

It also goes back to underage level and schools level.

I'm not up to date with Leinster colleges but what level does schools from Wicklow for example play at? I know they were quite strong where there was an intercounty Vocational Schools championship and won in it in the mid 2000s.

The reality is there is a maximum 4 counties that could win the all Ireland, maybe six at a long stretch. So you are talking about 26-28 teams who should be in this tailteann cup because it is the only meaningful 'national' championship trophy they have a hope of winning, that would be all div 2,3,4 and some of div 1 also.

How does the open draw you and others think is the answer going to change that?

It would be a fairer system than what is currently in place, it is luck of the draw

The nonsense of a "32 County open draw" is very far off the GAA's radar thankfully.

Replying To kentuckytucky:  "Get rid of NY out of the championship, scrap provincial championships, open draw of eight groups of four, seedings based on league. Top two make it to the last 16, bottom two are finished.. There's every chance a team from div four could make second spot in that scenario. There isn't that much difference in level between most div 2-4 teams. The div 4 team gets home advantage guaranteed against the div 1 team in the group. Every team gets a minimum three games."
Yeah, no. I want New York to stay in the Championship. They're coming closer and closer to winning and advancing than a lot of bottom tier footballing counties in Ireland are to advancing in their respective championships. Your idea is a bad idea all around in my opinion.

In the last 18 months i've been trying to get some facts around what is happening in Wicklow. I have spoken with some reliable sources and i am led to believe that a huge amount of the problems in the county relate to the county board as you point out. Things like the county board being a closed shop to outsiders looking for change, out of date practices that no longer work and individuals being in their roles for too long to name a few. I am led to believe that there was no Wicklow schools entered into competitions in Leinster since covid began which if true is mind blogging. You are right we had a good record in the old vocational schools competition plus there was a decent representation from Blessington on the Naas schools team that's been so succesful recently.

I think a team who wins the Tailteann Cup can gain the momentum to win a provincial title. It has happened before. Leitrim won an All Ireland B in 1990 and then won Connacht in 1994. Clare won an All Ireland B in 1991 and then won a Munster title in 1992.
Limerick have been unlucky not to win a Munster title on at least 3 occasions in the qualifier era. A Tailteann Cup win in the qualifier era might have given them the momentum to have converted some of those opportunities that got away.

Confirmed teams:
1. Fermanagh (3.5)
2. London (4.5)
3. New York
4. Antrim (3.4)
5. Carlow (4.7)
6. Offaly (2.7)
7. Laois (3.7)
8. Wexford (4.6)
9. Longford (3.6)
10. Waterford (4.8)
11. Sligo (4.3)
12. Down (2.8)

Down, Antrim and Fermanagh are probably the current favourites to utilise the Tailteann Cup to qualify for the All-Ireland championship 2023 final 16 group stage.

They don't qualify for the group stage if they win this year.

Agree 100%. And entry to these game should be no more than €10. This Competition should not be seen as a money making racket by the GAA. Crowds will be small so € 10 is plenty.

The McDonagh Cup tickets are €10. It'll be a fair enough price for the early Tailteann rounds.

The reasons people try to use against this are getting more and more petty. If it did cost €10 you'd say it should be €5.

And the name? No matter what it was called you and others would want it called something else.

Even the Tommy Murphy Cup for those who think it didn't work had it's benefits. Wicklow won it in 2007 and had two of their best championship seasons in 08/09. Antrim who were also in those finals got to an Ulster final on the back of it.

Now of course people will try and claim it had nothing to do with it and it would have happened anyway...

Clare footballers lost last night but are into the qualifiers for the All Ireland because they are a division 2 team. Tipperary a division 4 team beat another division 4 team Waterford. Tipperary a division 4 team now play Limerick a division 3 team and the winner will at worst join Clare in the qualifiers. In the Leinster quarter final Westmeath a division 3 team beat Longford a division 3 team. Westmeath must win there Leinster semi final and reach a provincial final to qualify for the the All Ireland series. Otherwise the win over Longford means nothing. League positions are now more important than championship victories. Provincial imbalance is also a big issue as Cavan may find out. It should also be noted that the loser of Derry / Tyrone are still in the Sam Maguire race as they are both division 1/2 teams. This game is an Ulster quarter final.
