20 years now since a division 2 team won an all Ireland. I think Armagh won in 2002 as a division 2 team Mayo reached the final last year as a division 2 team leitrim4sam (Leitrim) - Posts: 742 - 27/04/2022 21:52:26 2413750 Link 0 |

What restructure should happen that would actually make a difference? Other than the usual "Champions League format"? Despite what people think I've never seen how it would benefit anyone outside of the top teams?

There should be a separate c championship for division 4 teams in reality most of us in the basement have as much chance of winning the A as the B which is zero. Barrowsider (Carlow) - Posts: 1751 - 28/04/2022 09:27:13 2413764 Link 0 |

The provincial championships haven't a fair structure, that is obvious when you see the difference in the amount of counties in each province competing. But it has benefitted Kerry for over a century for example. So you either re align the provinces into 4 sections of 8, which will be shot down of course, or you scrap the provincial championships as a route to the all Ireland, come up with a champions league format or a proper league format, two groups of 16, or just a straight 32 team knockout cup like the FA cup. This was tried with the Tommy Murphy cup and the counties didnt like it. Theres no fun in playing the same counties in both league and championship. carlovia (None) - Posts: 1556 - 28/04/2022 10:14:26 2413785 Link 2 |

Any excuse to take a shot at Kerry. Again how does the opening draw or whatever you want to call it actually benefit anyone outside of the top teams? oneoff (UK) - Posts: 1651 - 28/04/2022 10:47:03 2413802 Link 0 |

Yep, down the Shannon a bit, many in Longford are excited for a Summer of games in Tailteann Cup, rather than another pointless Leinster campaign. Sundays outing against Westmeath will be our 160th Leinster Championship game ever. According to link we won 51 of 159 so far, reached the Leinster semi final only twice since 1970 and our record this century is 10 wins out of 35 in Leinster! So the provincials are dead and buried for a lot of us who are past being impressed by temporary glitches to an otherwise permanent state of pointlessness for a county of our size and resources. Can't wait for the Tailteann Cup and a chance to make progress with attainable silverware at the end. I also think we can have a solid go at it too. We seem to rise to the occasion in championship once Leinster is out of the way! Those qualifier wins against Monaghan and Down in 2016, Derry in 2012 & 2014, Mayo in 2010 and getting to Round 4 against Kerry in 2004 were pure magic! If the Tailteann Cup produces days like that but with attainable silverware at the end of the rainbow, it will be a roaring success!

Nah, that is the AI junior competition really and that was a micky mouse as larger counties still had it sewn up by being able to field senior standard players so they were right to make it an overseas competition. And as already stated above, you wont improve without the chance to play better teams and challenge yourself as well as no fun/interest in playing the same 7/8 teams every year. honestly think this current state needs 5/10 years to see whether it works, people are always gonna complain when their team is not winning, i personally would rather look internally rather than blaming the powers that be all the time gaelsboy (Leitrim) - Posts: 830 - 28/04/2022 13:41:04 2413866 Link 1 |

If Leitrim for example, who were pushing for promotion to Division 3, win the Tailteann Cup this year. They will be respected for qualifying for the All-Ireland Last 16 stage. Winners are respected. The Tailteann winners will be getting the top reward of Last 16 qualification. May the best county win!

Agree two levels sound about right, it's championship, there is not that much of a gap between top and bottom of football in div 3/4. The 4 teams would all fancy their chances.

In fairness, think they meant it was "the competition to avoid" as in the competition that counties towards the foot of Div. 2 of the League (like Cork, Offaly and Down) would want to avoid by way of keeping their Div. 2 status. Don't think they meant that the national broadcaster should avoid it completely!

The GAA are focused on the elite in hurling and they are finally getting to do the same in the football championship. Currently we have the Munster hurling championship being televised where teams compete against one another. From a media perspective it is the only show in town. BCC are covering the Ulster football championship. The weaker counties are not and never will be part of this scene regardless of what way the championship is structured. Until there is investment made to bring these counties in line with a certain standard they will never get to the top table. There is too much stacked against them. If they had the internal know how, expertise they would be at that level by now; they don't. The GAA will get to a stage with the football championship where it will reflect its hurling equivalent and you will have a super 8 playing each other like division 1 in the nfl; the rest will not be in the picture and will probably drift further behind. This is about money and about tradition. I guarantee there will be a lot of media coverage when Kerry are playing cork - tradition even though Cork are a million miles off Kerry.

It isn't a shot at Kerry, it is just a statement of fact in comparison to Ulster. The open draw would have fairness attached to it, equal amount of games, if you get picked against a top division team well that is the luck of the draw like the FA cup. Maybe have home advantage for all div 4 teams in first round unless they are playing each other in a game. Leitrim_12 (USA) - Posts: 207 - 29/04/2022 12:06:45 2414041 Link 0 |

At the start of the championship I would have seen about 12 counties capable of winning a provincial championship and 12 counties capable of winning the Tailteann Cup. The GAA seem to have found the right boundary point. 12 counties with a low league ranking have a realistic possibility of being in the All-Ireland group stage next year. When people see the reality of that reward, they will want to be a part of it. legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 10075 - 29/04/2022 12:07:02 2414043 Link 1 |

I really don't see this as being accurate at all. A 16 team top tier just isn't really that exclusive. Whammo86 (Antrim) - Posts: 4731 - 29/04/2022 13:19:06 2414055 Link 1 |

I don't see a down side to this for the weaker counties. A chance to win something realistic. If played on All Ireland final day and properly marketed by the organisation I'm sure people will buy into it Rhyne_Stonecowboy (Longford) - Posts: 52 - 30/04/2022 08:41:42 2414106 Link 0 |
