Tailteann Cup 2022

The end result has to be some sort of All Ireland medal to keep the interest among players that might usually go to the States or elsewhere during the summer . An intermediate All Ireland medal sounds more attractive.
From a Cavan man's prospective Tailteann refers to Meath and it wouldn't cut much ice with me whether we won it or not or even played in it.

The GAA have had a reluctance to call lower tiers intermediate and junior. My humble suggestion was "National Championship".
Connaught Championship
Leinster Championship
Munster Championship
Ulster Championship
National Championship
All-Ireland Championship

I think if we have it at all it should be the All Ireland shield competition, and have an actual decent sized and nice shield as a trophy, not one of these tiny cups that seem to be the gaa's favourite at the minute.

Nothing kills the pedigree and allure of a competition faster than the word Shield. Not to say it couldn't work with epic PR and the worlds best looking trophy, but it would take a Wimbledon Ladies or Community Shield type design to get over the stigma. I agree on the cups comment - the yokes that have been produced in recent years for Division winners in lower leagues and for colleges competitions are cat altogether.

In every sport a team who dropped down are relegated. What other word should be used?"
I fully agree with you.. relegation is the correct word.

Who wants to be relegated?

Would've been alot more appealing a name. They could still do that. Like the All Ireland Senior Football Championship is played for the Sam Maguire Cup.

No one I would say. But counties get relegated in the league every season players would also be relegated at club. So what word should we use so as not to upset people?

It seems Everton want to get relegated.

Hopefully the relegated teams can get over the disappointment of being in the competition and get something from it..

Should be a belter.

Anyone know when the GAA are planning the launch?

You would think alright. Just shows that having money doesn't guarantee anything.

The way I see it is that the GAA has to provide some platform for weaker teams to progress and the world has moved on from the time when the chance of a run in the qualifiers was enough to get players interested.

The Tailteann cup from 2023 provides an opportunity to get more games in for teams if they want to engage with it properly. Any team finding themselves in Tailteann is there for a reason, if they don't buy in to it and use it as a development opportunity it's on them.

Will it be a success? Who knows but it's worth trying.

It also helps facilitate more better quality championship games at the Sam Maguire level. Teams like Meath and Galway can fall behind the Dublin and Kerry's of this world when it comes to quality championship fixtures.

Is it the only potential system worth trying? No, but something had to change and it deserves a chance to see if it works.

Seem to see lots of bashing of the Tailteann cup in this forum. I think the creator of it intended it for ppl to discuss the possible winners of it etc not for people to be giving there opinion on whether its a mikey mouse competition or not. I for one am very excited for the summer ahead. Normally our summer is hoping we draw london/NY only for us to draw one of Galway, Mayo or Roscommon get beat out the gate go into qualifiers maybe get a win against Carlow, Wicklow etc. Then meet a Kildare/Derry in 2nd round and get beat out the gate. This year we've had a great weekend in London, we go to Salthill Sunday week as massive underdogs, more than likely we lose but then we will go into the Tailteann cup as strong contenders. So some of you bigger counties may label it as a mikey mouse competition but for the Leitrims of the country it is welcomed with open arms and we look forward to hopefully a long summer of football ahead.

The only people bashing the Tailteann Cup are people that think there county is above it. The reality is it'll always be a Division 1 team that wins the All-Ireland and in rare circumstances maybe a Division 2 team. Somebody good with statistics might be able to say when a team outside Division 1 last won the All-Ireland but the reality is that gap between Division 1 and 2 is bigger than ever, never mind 3 and 4 and the majority of teams in 3 and 4 are there for years. This gives them something to compete for.

Totally agree.

Its such a GAA thing that we knock a competition before it begins.

Lets see in a few years how it goes.

also agree, cos that is essentially what it is, the junior championship is back but its now for overseas teams (and Kilkenny).
like club, junior/inter standard teams cannot jump up and down and say their players want to play senior cos they are not interested in their level, find players that are and work with them.
If players would rather go abroad and work/travel for the summer once out of provincials, i encourage them to go cos you are only young once, no time for the old fashioned rubbish that football is everything and travelling in winter is just not the same

On that basis so it is pointless having provincial championships too, as it is nearly always div 1 teams that win them. So why do we continue with them? Either we restructure the championship completely or not at all, not this half measure.

The basis that people are bashing it is that the B All Ireland and the Tommy Murphy cup both faded away interest wise.

It all boils down to how serious managers and players take this Tailteann Cup. The most important competitions i see for Div 3,4 teams at the moment is the league. It allows teams to develop/improve and if good enough move up to Div 2 and challenge themselves against higher ranked teams.

The way this competition is advertised by the media will be important. Thus far not a word about the round 1 draw or when the competition will get its launch. Looking at the TV schedule of SKY and RTÉ the only matches that will be live is the semi finals. Will GAAGO step in to stream the early round games?

West Ham want to win the Europa League to qualify for the Champions League. Leicester City want to win the Europa Conference League to qualify for the Europa League.
All around the country, intermediate clubs want to win promotion to the senior grade. Junior clubs want to win promotion to the intermediate grade.
Why would counties in the Tailteann Cup not want to win it, when winning it provides qualification for the All-Ireland Final 16 group stage?

Semi Finals and Final are on live TV.
The 3 Leinster 1st Round games weren't on live TV, 3 of the their Qtr Finals won't be, the 2 Connacht Semis won't be, probably only 2 Munster SFC games will be.

All those games will get a few minutes of highlights will RTÉ do the same for Tailteann Cup round 1 and quarter final ties? RTÉ pundits throughout the league dubbed it as the competition to avoid.
