Cavan Seniors 2022

A win by the tightest margin and more than likely promotion but a campaign that has done little to suggest this team will make any progress in the Ulster championship when we come up against real opposition….. A win in the league final would set them up for a tilt with Antrim but I wouldn't be putting much money on this set of players against any opposition the way they have struggled through all Division 4 games so far….

Replying To RHF:  "No excuses can be made for this team/management combination. Its the worst league performances the last 4 years and an embarrassment tbh."
Not one to target players/management, but have to say I agree. We have been tactically inept all year. The team has regressed significantly for the last three years. Gone from a division one team all be it struggling, to a division 4 team in three years. If that happened in any other sport the management team would be out on its head.

The only saving grace was an Ulster title, which was great but if you look at the performances even that year, Antrim could have easily beaten us in Breffni, Monaghan threw away a seven point lead and the Down game was similar (threw away a seven or eight point lead). We had one complete performance all year against Donegal, who by all accounts overlooked us based on the year before.

I don't understand the decision making, caomhin Reilly taken off at half time.. Cormac Reilly taken off not long into the second half (both lads looked fairly dangerous). Last week against tipp we had two forwards to score from play, caomhin and Gerry Smith, and Reilly got taken off not long after half time.

Stats seem to have taken over in the set up. More interested in how many tackles a forward makes than how much they score... They seem to be happier with lads around the middle if they complete a few handpasses rather than transitioning the ball at pace into the forwards.

It's sad to say but I think the best football Cavan have played over the past five years was under Mcgleenan in the division 2 league when we got to the final.

Replying To tenyearplan:  "We re not promoted yet - If Cavan were to lose their final game against Waterford, Tipperary draw with London and either Sligo or Leitrim win their clash, then three teams will finish on 10 points, which means score difference would then apply and a six-point defeat at home to Waterford would see Cavan miss out, in that unlikely scenario."
I remember us slipping up against Waterford before when we were "gauranteed" promotion.

Cavan are a long way from the top table. We struggled to beat a very poor London team. Where do we go from here. We definitely need a new manager. This set up has failed spectacularly. That Ulster Championship win is a distant memory. Those Cavan players need a new man with new ideas. After our championship is over in a few weeks Mickey Graham should move along. Cavan at the minute are unwatchable. Is CCB going to let this management continue. Hopefully they see the light. Also with the U 20s getting pummelled most weekends the future is bleak.

Agreed - if anyone can snatch defeat out of the jaws of victory its Cavan !

Northern sound up date Magnificent Cavan one step closer to the double League Champions and Tailteann Cup winners after another convincing display.

There hasn't been a consistent level of performances in a good while. In 2020 Cavan were beginning to get some momentum in the League after a really bad start, but then lost to Clare before the lockdown in a really poor performance. Then lost the 2 games when the games got back against Kildare and Roscommon,

They won the Ulster after that but that was with heroic comebacks and 1 huge performance against Donegal. Donegal it was said were focusing on Dublin, but Cavan deserved it.
Roscommon a similiar size County could be going back to Division 1. They don't drop from 1 to 4

Couple of things. It wasn't a very poor London team. It's a team at home, with some very good players from strong counties in there. They've won 3 games in the league, and are good at home. Yes, we should be beating them by more, but they're not a very poor team.

And are you really wanting a change of manager based on league results? Haven't his Championship results been very strong, and isn't that the main thing for us? Be mad about the league surely, but lets not get ridiculous at a time when we're looking like we're getting promoted. I'd much rather get results (even with bad performances) in the league if it means we're better for Championship. How often do we see teams go hell for leather in a league, and die on their feet in Championship? It's a delicate balancing act not peaking too early. Lord knows we did it ourselves the years we were getting promoted to Division 1. Great all Spring, poor in Championship.

Maybe just wait until Championship before going on a rant against the manager, one who has got us to 2 Ulster finals, winning one. Are you actually near solid here?

I agree with your point in general but I am pretty sure Roscommon were in Div 4 in the last 10 years as they came up in that stat about only one team ever (Derry) winning all there games in Div 4 since the leagues were restructured. But yes, Roscommon have maintained a high level consistency as have Monaghan with a similar sized population to us.

Surely London will be up there with the likes of Mayo and Dublin contending for Sam later this year?

Think we have shown at times that we can play great football, when we want to. The first 15 mins yesterday were brilliant. 1-5 up and motoring. I don't know is it concentration or what, but we don't keep our foot on the throttle and allow us to be comfortable. Jeez it's bad when we can go 8 points up, but we go to sleep and allow teams back in. Is this a mental thing, or what, or not killing themselves/showing our hand fully in the league? I know teams can't keep the foot down for a whole 70+ minutes, but we seem to turn the tap off and then are not able to get it back on again. The thing is, if we do come out to play our best, we can play some outstanding football and I'd say we could put it up to most teams out there. We just so rarely put it together for long enough.

If we can just get a performance in the league final, and get a run into Championship, then maybe we time things well as I think we're so close to clicking. If we get a good Championship run with good performances, then it'll be good. I'm really hoping it's a load thing, and when we get to the red hot heat of a Championship game then we can put a 40/50 minute performance that will win you most games. The 10 or 15 minutes we play right now sees us fall over the line against Div 4 teams, but needs to be far far better and consistent into the late Spring/early Summer.

Of course you'd be along to be ridiculous. I am clearly not saying that. Is there no middle ground somewhere between very poor and All Ireland contenders? All I'm saying is that they're not a very poor team, and they've some decent players

Time to stop making excuses and making out the opposition are decent, these are the worst teams in the leagues and we are just about getting over them and lost to one at home.

Either the players we have are not good enough ( i believe they are a lot better than performances to date have shown) or the management are not good enough and tactics and game management are not working ( this is the issue i think).

There were lots of people who wanted rid of a manger who was just after getting us promotion to Division 1 and his replacement has brought us right back down to the basement and is getting more or less a free pass because of the Ulster final win. If he wasn't a Cavan man he would be gone long ago.

Do you not think London cut us wide open in that first half and had 2 great goal chances . 1 went wide a Galligan saved the other. You conveniently fail to mention that.
Our full back line was poor where a big London full forward out jumped our backs on many occasions and if he had help we would have been In trouble.
We are too fond of lateral and backward passing as if we were trying to beat an offside trap.
Let the ball do the work , it's travels faster than any player.
We brought Thomas Galligan on 2nd half and kicked 1 ball into him which he messed up as he was only on the field. Then we abandoned that ploy when it didn't work once.
Crazy stuff at times. GmcKiernan head and shoulders above anyone on the pitch.

Who's making excuses? I've already pointed out above how bad we were. Simply pointing out that London look decent and have some good footballers and are not a very poor team based on their results this year.

And not disagreeing. Don't think it's a case the players are not good enough, they have repeatedly shown us in Championship that they are. And at times this league campaign they've shown glimpses at times when it clicks, like the first 15 yesterday. The problem is we then zone out and don't put a full performance together. We're winning games by playing for 10 minutes, but that's not enough for later this year. Jeez we need to start putting things together.

But here's my point, you seem happy with a manager (McGleenan) who had us running well in the league, but he did practically nothing in championship. We then have another (Graham) who has been very bad in the league, but have performed very well in Championship. Which is better? Which do you prefer? I know myself I'll take Championship wins and titles any day over a manager who has us well in the league but doing nothing in the summer... You think Graham would be gone long ago simply based on League? That's actually crazy talk...

Oh they did surely. I didn't conveniently fail to mention it, I just didn't dissect the game in detail. I more looked at our lads, and how we went fully to sleep after we went 1-5 to 0-0 up. Just because I didn't break down every single play didn't mean I was ignoring it pal...

Yeah he was alright, Paddy lynch was good at times too.

Hard to know how our performance levels have dropped so much in recent times….. Our dropping down the divisions certainly doesn't help but our players who won us an Ulster title have not suddenly turned into bad players…. I suspect we are not as good as we showed in that Ulster Final and a few of our team might have got overinflated opinions of their ability… What we need now is a league final win and a good performance (win hopefully) v Antrim…

I think its fair to say we will all be delighted once this league is over, it has been nothing but frustrating for everyone.
At the start of the year I would have felt division 2 was the level of this team, but on reflection I don't think we are as good as we think. I actually feel we have regressed so much in the last 2 years and even since last summer. Since that game v Donegal in 2020 we haven't put one decent performance together in league or championship. You would need to seriously question where the team is going in the long term. The whole thing just looks stale at the moment.
This summer will be a defining one for the management, if we were to lose to Antrim and not make a serious tilt at the Tailteann cup I think all parties will need to evaluate the situation. History will be kind to Mickey no matter what, but are we actually a better team than the team he took over in 2018? That was a division one team who were knocked out in the qualifiers by Tyrone after a really brave and gutsy performance.
I know we won an Ulster championship since but we could realistically be the worst team in Ulster at the moment and most definitely in the bottom 3. Take nothing away from 2020 it was one of the best days as a Cavan fan but we want to challenge like that every year not just every 25 years. I'm losing faith that Mickey is the man to lead us to long term and sustainable success. I hope I'm proved wrong but this summer will be huge.
