2021 Hurling Championship

Hopefully our under 20s will win Dublin's first All Ireland county title since 1965 later on.

I think they can play better than they did against Galway, but will be up against a Cork team driven by a similar hunger. Munster has been the strongest province in the grade for a while now and Cork beat a fancied Tipp side.

Lay offs have been a factor in championship in senior, and Cork have been off since before Christmas. A good start by our fellas might put them on the back foot.

Replying To skirge7:  "Why is there a preliminary round in the hurling qualifiers?

There will are 7 teams knocked out before the finals. Just give one a bye?

Last year Wexford lost their first game, a semi final, and then we drawn in round 2 of the qualifiers.

Should the draw not be something like

Leinster 1 v Munster 1
Leinster 2 v Munster 2
Leinster 3 v Munster 3
Leinster 4 v bye

Seeing Laois play Antrim again is crazy. The winner will then have to beat a Munster team just to be at the same level that another team begins the qualifiers at.

I would also argue that in stead of a 'bye' the Leinster 4 team should play the Joe McDonagh winners (Most likely Kerry). The Joe McDonagh could have been played off at the same time and the Munster and Leinster Championships."
I think this preliminary round is also serving as a relegation play-off (loser going back to Joe McDonagh cup next year).

Hopefully we'll be back to the round robin/2019 format next year, which will mean that whoever gets the McDonagh final next year will go on to play in Liam McCarthy qualifiers.

Thanks for that Viking. Hadn't realised Wexford had not won an underage.

In other news, Laois hammering Antrim in preliminary in Parnell. Ten up at half time. They are the strangest team. Completely useless all year then pull one out, as we know to our cost two years ago. Actually pleased for them.

What a game!

Antrim have come from 11 down to 2 down in space of ten minutes!

Laois down to 13 temporarily and 14 for rest of game.

Very enjoyable game, great win for Laois, some super scores on show.
Hard luck to Antrim. Got some super results during the league, can't see how relegating them is helpful.

has to be done though sadly otherwise if teams keep coming up from joe mcdonagh it will become a poor standard with only a handful of teams

Yeah, we need to see a huge increase in standards before expansion is considered. I'd love to see an 8 team Leinster championship with Laois, Offaly, Antrim competing but we are a good bit away from that.

A silly comment about Antrim,

No love lost between themselves and Dublin and some right scelping over the years! Some great hurling people in the city and the glens and they've kept the game alive and often at a good level with huge obstacles in their way.

I didnt see any of the Laois lads rubbing their noses in it either, as they've been in the same boat themselves.

I honestly thought our hurlers had overcome the mental side of senior Championship hurling but sadly not. Unfortunately they are as still as weak as their predecessors. Two steps forward and 10 back in the space of a few weeks. Back to square one.

Congratulations Galway on winning 4 All Ireland Minor titles in a row..... the last 3 Finals Galway have beaten KK.
Thank you.

You'll be back. You have a lot of nice hurlers. You did some good things this year. Hang in there.

I thought they lost it very late after blowing the big lead in the first half. Great young hurlers on both sides. The future looks bright in the sport. Galway Abu!!!

Ya. Overall they were the better team in what was a good game of hurling.
But they should have been playing the last 18 minutes with 14 men.
A blatant punch to the groin by the Cork full forward on a Dublin player.

True. And there seemed to be a few points on both sides called wide which the players themselves were surprised at. Overall Cork were the hungrier team played with good intensity. Dublin did well to hang in there problem for them is that some of the players will concentrate on football at senior.

Can I say well done to Laois on their win over Antrim yesterday. They guaranteed their participation in the Leinster championship, in a terrific match with Antrim. After a terrible year Cheddar Plunkett and his players got it right yesterday. Hard luck on Antrim who go down to Joe McDonagh in 2022.

Cheddar is one of the best hurling brains in the country and a true gent to add to it. I reckon Cheddar's year was building to two matches! Yesterday's game to stay in the Liam McCarthy for 2022 & the NHL Div 1A & 2A relegation game V Westmeath which is being played as a curtain raiser to the SHC All Ireland final. Despite Antrim's valiant results earlier in the season it's now back down to Joe Mc for them in 2022. Laois now have the added advantage of playing another Liam Mc game next week….. and it will be one of the "big guns". There will be no pressure on them to win so hopefully they will put in a performance. This is invaluable preparation for their game against Westmeath.
So despite some media disappointment with Laois this year they might have a fairly successful year yet. This will let them build for 2022.
