In the club u16 competition last year they sort of finished 7th or 8th in Div 1 in a 8 team group just as a gauge, naturally you'll have stronger years at underage and not so strong. Shels, Annes, Crossabeg, Ferns and Cloughbawn are other Senior clubs at adult with nobody in the 34.

There's just 4 players out of an extended panel of 34 from the main population centres in the county. Compare that with Kilkenny panel of 24…. There's 10 players from the city teams. Could be just one of those years but from memory the harriers had no one involved with the minors last year neither.

I think we'd be better off bringing in Conor Mac for either Cathal Dunbar or Richie Lawlor, would start the rest of the team as named otherwise ElGranSenor (Wexford) - Posts: 439 - 26/04/2024 12:58:41 2540747 Link 0 |
Mad thing is I know lads in Kilkenny who see that as a bad thing and rural clubs are struggling for them, City clubs dominate underage generally up there, Ballyhale I gather rather than produce excellent underage teams produce some brilliant individual players and let very little fall through the net. Another thing to remember for Kilkenny is the 3 city clubs catchment extends to rural area's close to the city, Shels catchment goes in as far as Wexford bridge, glynn goes into Wexford racecourse, Martins in Drinagh as far as the cinema and Zurich Insurance and Crossabeg's goes in as far as Ferrycarrig Bridge. Those lads from KK think Dicksboro could potentially become a 'super club' of Kilkenny with alot of housing developments either going on or in the pipeline in their catchment area. Actually was told 18 of out of a panel of 33 or 34 was from 3 clubs for Kilkenny (James Stephens, Dicksboro, Castlecomer). Your right though about the towns in general, New Ross is becoming a write off almost when it comes to GAA.

Other side of that coin is there are sometimes complaints in Kilkenny that lads from "country clubs" don't get a fair crack of the whip at minor level, and there's too much emphasis on city clubs. Anyway, no disrespect to the Harriers, but I presume the question here is how come they're not producing hurlers good enough for the county minor squad, rather than why are the minor management overlooking a number of Harriers lads who should be deemed good enough. That team had to be named for Wednesday for the programmes to be printed.

Heard the same. Dicksboro have massive underage numbers. Even more than Barntown.

I see the young lad from Martins that was named on this earlier in the week is starting tomorrow.

On the one hand it's great to see a spread of clubs making up any inter county panel but the harriers should have inter county standard players at all age groups when they more or less have Wexford town to themselves. (They had 6 players on the 2019 extended minor panel. Granted that was an exceptional group winning All Ireland Feile and numerous underage grades all the way up). Same applies to the rapps and gorey. As forNew Ross…………

Id have Byrne starting instead of Casey. I feel we'd get more out of Byrne than Casey although he has been great in the league I just feel Byrne is more of a threat inside with his pace and accuracy

Not sure Cians any faster than Seamus tbh. They are different types of player though, Cian would be more of a wide player. Thought Casey was hard done by the last day, nearly no ball played to him, the lads kept targeting Chin and ROC, who were also operating in the space Casey was running out to during the League. If we are going to play like we did against Dublin we may as well stick Mac inside. We went away from the way we were playing the last few months.

He's starting a teaching job in September. We played Crossabeg Tuesday in the Rackard League and I got told he would be back for the club championships. Oisin won't be back on the pitch any time soon.

There are 8 players on the squad from the greater Gorey area including Castletown, 9 if you include Ballygarret. 3 in the squad from Rapps, 2 starting. And New where?;-)

Remember seeing an off the ball episode on Ballyhale and Tommy Shefflin (Henrys older brother) said there is a huge emphasis in Ballyhale on developing players between the age of 17 to 21 so they can become complete senior hurlers for club or county. He said Ballyhale play a Roinn C level mostly underage as they don't have the numbers to compete with the big city clubs. Past hurler (None) - Posts: 903 - 26/04/2024 15:55:09 2540788 Link 0 |
