Replying To Doylerwex:  "Not intend intended as bait at all.

Just thinking out loud really.

There are more transferable skills in football is my point.

Hurling is very much out on it's own.

If it was my choice there wouldn't be football or anything else for that matter, but thankfully it isn't my choice"
Surely u mean u wish it was your choice if you ve no time for any other sport if not you are admitting u are wrong in your thoughts we could hurl all year round week in week out . I d have no problem with that but unfortunately hurling is nt everyone's first choice
All sports have transferable skills in fairness .
All sports need time put in outside ser training sessions . 2 or 3 x 1 to 1and1/2 hour sessions a week won't get you close to the top . It's the extra u do because you want to that makes you better abd an achiever
Bit like fishing posts

Replying To camánouttathat:  "Yeah I'm 50/50 on increasing senior teams to 16 but would be more leaning towards not increasing it to 16 teams just as I feel the intermediate championship is in a good place at the moment with fethard, cloughbawn, oulart, oylgate, crossabeg all teams who would be competitive in senior and any of them could go up or down each year. Take 3 of them out of intermediate and do the others improve? I don't think so.

I would agree our championships are poor standard. We get wake up call when playing outside our county. But even our standard of refereeing is so poor.

A serious talk is going to be needed and some hard decisions to be made whether we want to improve standards which will help our county teams or keep competitive championships of poor quality"
What about 3 groups, 2 of 5 teams 1 group of 4 teams
Top 5 of previous years groups in top 2 groups . And bottom team relegated into third group for first year to set it up
2 intermediate finalists also go into group of 4 for next year year
Leaving 2 groups of 5 for intermediate also.

Qualification works like this Top 2 in group 3 promoted to senior championship 1/4 final v 1st in group 1 or 2 an open draw 2nd plays 3rd in other 1/4 finals
. And following year regardless they are in Top 10 split into 2 groups of 5 again
Bottom 2 teams go into relegation final s 4th in group playing 5th in other group losers are relegated to group 3 for following year . Bottom 2 In group 3 play in intermediate 1/4 final playing 3rd place team in intermediate groups 1st plays 2nd in other group again 4th plays 5th in relegation semi final losers play final only 1 team relegated to intermediate A .
Again the intermediate finalists are promoted to group 3 so you get a good chance if in the group of 4 to stay up there and build .
Would mean all games are taken very serious .
A week off in group stages for each team at different stages run the risk and possibility of teams knowing what they need to do in last game but that happens either way . And 2 teams idle for first and last rounds in the top 2 groups. Minimum of 4 games depending on progress of poor year . In group of 4 you could have play off 1v 4 2 v3 to see who goes into senior or intermediate to ensure every team gets at least 5 games .
Better balanced groups more at stake in each game giving 14 teams a chance of winning senior championship and same at intermediate . Could prepare the best intermediate teams to give them in theory a chance v the weaker senior teams you should get very competitive games I would imagine very little room for errors .
Might sound complicated the way I ve worded it but it's not really if you understand it ..
Effectively 10 senior teams and 4 in between intermediate and senior .
Suppose it's similar to winners of Joe mac Donagh getting a shot at the all ireland

I'd say the 2 Intermediate finalists should be closer to the 2 teams finishing bottom of Senior than the Joe Mac finalists would be to the 3rd placed teams in Munster and Leinster but I get your point. Would that format save any time though or would we have time to run it off?

Replying To Formertownie:  "Ha ha what a statement a great cast with the old rod there lot a bait on that hook .
Problem with hurling in wexford at present young lads don't train themselves enough in the finer skills of hurling in their back gardens .
Some day we ll make it to the top table in hurling if we keep blaming football . Welll at least we are playing a higher level I suppose . Definitely close to being the 10th best hurling team in Ireland at present not bad condmsidering there prob only 12 counties that actually care about it unfortunately.
Get real lad we are not in great shape in either code at present . Answers to all the questions pondered upon why this is the case are very complex.
But basically at present we don't have the players to compete does nt mean we are losers if we enjoy both codes.
If success is measured on titles we are in even more trouble. Get your children playing and improve it but most of all enjoy it ."
This post sums up the prevailing attitude in Wexford GAA, or at least how I saw it and still see it from a distance of 20k miles. I could sum this up in 1 line:
"I know we're not great at either, but that's where we are and though I don't have the answers but lets all go out and enjoy ourselves and that is all that matters".

Also, do people think clubs in Wexford playing football for 5-6 weeks is going to do something for football in the county?
In many clubs, I would hazard a guess a football has hardly been seen yet. Once the hurling is over, clubs might try a bit but in many clubs the effort will be nowhere close to the effort to win hurling championship.
Do people really think that that helps Wexford football somehow?

A bit of a throw away comment there. Every club player will be trying his best to win a county medal regardless what the sport and what the grade.
There was a lot of very happy Oulart men walking off the pitch in Ballyhogue last year, the same Oulart players who wanted to keep training football despite being asked to stop for the Leinster intermediate championship.

I am admitting that I'm wrong.

I adore hurling. I think it should be prioritised above all else. Its not a sport. Its who we are as a people.

I'm also realistic enough to know that mine is a minority view, and I have no right to enforce what I think should be done.

Again, not a fishing post. That's a little insulting.

My time on this forum going back decades supports the fact that I've no intes3t in arguing.

I just love wexford hurling, and there's little I wouldn't sacrifice to see us do what Limerick have

Our lads like most others played a full football league programme and trained for it alternately with the hurling. Agreed most won't see a football now until we are gone from the hurling championship but their hurling will be better as a result.

Don't know what club you are from but there'll be plenty of clubs from Junior to senior training just as hard to win the football championships

It does nothing for them.

There were clubs who put in a token effort in football following the hurling championship last year and followed that up this year by not even bothering to put in a team in this years football league which they had previously taken part in.

And this year theres even less of a break between the championships, literally 1 week. There are clubs who wont have seen a football since last September and depending on how well the hurling side goes will possibly pick up a football 3 days before the championship starts if they reach a hurling final. Thats if they play at all, it will be interesting to see what happens in that respect.

Bar the football only clubs the last time a football would have been seen in the majority of clubs would have been around the middle of May apart from teams who finish 5th in the championship the earliest a team will be finished hurling would be the weekend of the 6th of August (hurling quarter finals) with football scheduled to kick off on the weekend of the 27th.

Something has to give really, we dont have the time for this many games in 2 codes and have clubs taking part in Leinster Club Championships

For sure. Otherwise we would be like Kilkenny already.

Talking to a number of ppl involved with different clubs and most of their views are similar to my own in that alternative weekends, while not ideal was the best way to run the championship as it was the fairnest way and allowed players of injured to still make it back for either a football or hurling championship. In years gone past, If a player went travelling he still could come back for the business end of the championship. If he is hurling now he has no hope.

Yes we do need a gap weekend, but I think the suggestion of playing a hurling championship from quarter finals to conclusion and Same for football is a good one.

As someone said above everything should be looked at

Sad to see nothing has been done with the place since Collette died. It was a joke post Doylerwex. Knitting needles to burst all the footballs in the county; )

Nearly every club entered a football team in the league that entered a football team the last year before the split season got introduced Tearintom. Our last football game we beat Ferns in a relegation game by a point on the 19th May. So the lads have been concentrating on hurling the last few weeks for sure. And obviously will stay concentrating on it til whenever they are knocked out. Or hopefully win it out. Then it's back to football and see can we win that after getting to the semi final last year.
Agree about the number of games which, along with getting more players exposed to a higher standard of hurling and football, were the main reasons why I put a proposal forward for 16 team Senior, Intermediate and Junior grades doing away with Intermediate A. This would mean a couple of games less in hurling and football and therefore more time to complete the championships in time for the provincial championships. The proposal got very little support either here or at Board level.

The thing is though that Limerick are invested big time into football also.

Limerick are spending the money investing in the youth, making their players fitter, faster, stronger than everyone else.

Would take the same time only every team in top 2 tiers get a week off . . And after round Robin series every team still has at least one very important knockout game to play be it a
senior 1/4 final
senior relegation final as 2 drop to group 3 .
Intermediate 1/4 final
Intermediate relegation semi final and then final .
Gives every team a reason to stay focused and up to speed . No facile anti climax end to the usual 5th place team as is niw . Should keep all groups competitive right to the last minute . With only 3 qualifying fir 1/4 finals proper.

Think you need to read it again. The main reason we are nt at the top table in either is and I know this as a coach of both codes . The children themselves and their parents are not as committed as they need to be Full stop and those that are are in the minority . Its just one if the problems at present . These players make dev squads and from u13 up are very unlikely to be dropped more likely to walk away or play an opposing sport as they are multi talented . Lack of competition for places on these teams is our biggest problem complacency sets in very quickly and if you are not challenged you will not improve to any great standard . . Colleges Schools are mediore at present too . From 20k miles away u can see all this I presume . I do everything I can to raise the standard. To do this first and foremost the sport needs to be enjoyed and taken seriously . Come back and help if you feel that strongly about it like the rest of us .

Yes agree on on 2 intermediate teams just trying to emphasise point of getting a chance to win senior as comparison

Look, there is a world of difference between fielding a team and actually being committed to the game. I would say many clubs in Wexford field football teams because 1. There's a few of the football "guerilla's" (to rob the term above) in their club who would kick up blue murder at the AGM if not and 2. Well, what else is there to do from mid-August if not?

I get people might say "Look at St. Annes Rathangan and how well they do in both" but that's just a handful of clubs and to be fair, I bet if Oulart or Rathnure committed 30-40% of their time to football they could be a good dual club and might win a couple of Wexford football titles. Instead, their ambition was higher and went all out and won Leinster titles and Oulart definitely should have won more. Rathnure if I remember right came up against a really great Kilruane McDonaghs team in the late 90s?

What Wexford are trying to do now is unsustainable and is not conducive to Wexford adult teams winning Leinster and All-Ireland titles. The county is big enough to sustain both but not in the current guise. If we want top players, and top Wexford teams in both codes, something has to give but that is the changing world we live in and the pursuit of top level achievement.

Players need to be playing more games, more meaningful games and having a championship which lasts longer than 6 weeks. If Wexford not being in the Leinster championship is the fall guy to allow our championships time to breathe, cest la vie.
