Wexford's point blank save and a missed free from Kilkenny were the turning points Yellow (Wexford) - Posts: 589 - 12/05/2023 19:02:15 2477948 Link 0 |
It's all about results viking. Unfortunately we had a very poor league and an unimpressive championship so far. It was always going to be a big ask to get wins with so many of our key players injured. During the season to date we've had Chin, Rory, Mogie, Mac, Dee,OHanlon, Devitt, Flood, Jacko, Jippo and a few more that I can't remember. No team could cope with that many casualties. It was a cruel blow for management, the players and the fans. We all want our team to be successful but that was always going to be impossible with so many carrying injuries. Yes we were poor in most of our games. Yes we were giving out stink about our defensive strategy and our lack of power in the front six but Egan had no choice as having to play with so many inexperienced lads winning games was always going to be near impossible. Oh I've just remembered, Damien Reck our top defender was and still is out of action. Now it's a case of hoping our guys get back to full fitness and we come 3rd in the round Robin. We always like to blame somebody for our failures but I think we all need to look deeper into the reasons. No one liked our style of play over the last few months, it must have frustrated the players as much as it frustrated us. Egan knew we had to play defensively. It was damage limitation. I felt we should have played with more upfront but when you think about it maybe it was the right way to go. With everyone back I'm sure our style of play will change dramatically. Hopefully that will change, think Molloy was the best player on last year's u20 team.

We had a couple of missed goal attempts also though. We were probably the 6 points better that we needed to be to win by 2 if you know what I mean!

I couldn't care less about our style of play tbh. I just want the lads to show some composure and get over the line in a few big games. Against Tipp with the extra man we reverted to going long, forgot about the short game that put us in a winning position, and lost the game. Against Clare in 2021 we stayed on the bus for the 1st quarter. Against Clare last year we wilted as they put the pressure on, and let their fans ramp it up even more by gifting them a goal. The last 2 games against Dublin we missed some really good chances, including some shocking wides from placed balls. Any other top 9 county are 90% plus from frees. We were barely at 2/3rds of that the last day. If we had of scored just 1 of those 8 or 9 missed frees, Rory could've put the last free over the bar, if he didn't miss it, and we would have drawn the game. If we had of got 90% of our frees we would have won by 5 or 6 points. Oddly the Wexford hurling podcast discussed the game at length without even mentioning the word "frees"!

I would certainly think that Cian Byrne will be our freetaker next year. He is really good from all angles and he's contribution from play is well above average. Having a reliable freetaker would most definitely keep us competitive and get us winning games instead of losing because of inaccurate shooting from placed balls. I believe Byrne is a must for the future.

You'd wonder though- Banville got a bit of game-time earlier in the year and is regarded as one of our better free-takers in the squad. Considering Chin is clearly hampered by the AC injury (certainly last week anyway), could we have not given Banville the chance to at least keep us competitive? Or was he even on the match day panel, I can't remember?

Didn't that point-blank save come from a fairly obvious square-ball though?

Yes he is very consistent with them and a busy player in open play too.

He was. And I think he should start the next day. I posted up a team to play Westmeath on this a few days ago.

Banville is undoubtedly a very good freetaker and if Chin is unable to play then he should start. However looking down the road a bit surely Cian Byrne would get the vote ahead of Banville as he has a better workmate and a better return from play. As I said his freetaking is exemplary. Just been a freetaker is not enough in the modern game. Everyone must work for the 70+ minutes. Magpie2 (Wexford) - Posts: 447 - 13/05/2023 20:44:39 2478149 Link 0 |
Agree 100 % Cian Byrne has a better workrate and is more aggressive. I do think Ross Banville is a better scorer from play though.

You probably have the stats on Banville Viking, but would it be true to say that he didn't score much from play in any of the games he played. Although he never really got a decent run throughout the league or championship.

Didn't banville come on and get a point the last day

He hasn't really had any Championship and not much League gametime tbh. He played the whole game against Clare and got most of his frees and 65s, but got nearly no ball played inside to him to score from play as we were over run. He scored a goal against Westmeath when he came on at half time and played ok. He didn't play at all against Cork, Galway or Limerick. He was playing ok in Birr in the Walsh Cup before getting injured off after 50 or so minutes. Don't think he scored from play but he got 9 frees as the Offaly backs were fouling alot to prevent scores from open play. He played very well against Laois in the Walsh Cup opener, not sure he missed any frees and scored a few from play. He came on in the 2nd half against Kilkenny in the Park but looked like he still wasn't fully fit after going off against Offaly. Got most of his frees think he missed 1 scoreable one. He's still only 23 this year. He played well for DCU the last couple of years in the handful of their games I saw on TV. Got some nice scores from play and linked up attacking play well. It's his habit of marking space when opponents are coming out short with the ball is his main problem. And he's not a huge lad so isn't the best at winning long puckouts in his direction. But then those would be criticisms that Galway folk had of Niland and he scored 6 or 7 from play against us by taking up those little pockets of space and getting fed the ball by the bigger lads who could win it. Well he definitely couldn't be any worse than some of the lads I witnessed in Croke Park v Dublin. And one certain thing is, he won't develop as a county hurler sitting on the bench week in and week out. Past hurler (None) - Posts: 921 - 14/05/2023 22:31:07 2478522 Link 0 |
That is for sure. If he played against Dublin the last day and got 6 of the 9 missed frees we had would Dublin have scored 4 or more points on account of him being on the pitch?

Surely should start against Westmeath?

You would think it would be worth giving him a go
