I understand this, but almost all counties choose to complete leagues prior to playing championships after the in county championships finished. Leitrim Mayo and Fermanagh are three I know for sure did.

Yes but this is down to the counties concerned. We played our club Leagues during the intercounty season and started our club championships a week or so after our intercounty campaigns finished.

Maybe don't disagree with you but I would point out that the timing of the provincial and AI club are a big part of the reason counties take their time getting started. I've always felt those should be pushed out to Jan, February, March and that the intercounty season can start later and be finished by the end of August. A county knocked out early can get cracking with their club championship. I know that wouldn't allow a fully rigid calendar but I think it'd give a lot of clarity but still provide some flexibility to get more club games in better conditions. I have no problem with Split season - its a good thing. But no point in playing club championship at same time as previous in the muck and clabber. Some said the provincial championships don't start until Nov - start them earlier. Start club championships as early as possible when the county team is knocked out, then play provincials. I know there are some dual counties and things would need to be ironed out but surely playing football in awful conditions when there is a free period in the height of summer to play defeats the purpose. Provincial championships should start on the first week of November. Cavan's problem is of their own making in this regard. Ye last played intercounty on July 9th. You'd have 4 months to dedicate to club games Onfor15 (Wexford) - Posts: 533 - 26/10/2022 13:11:44 2445505 Link 0 |
Pray tell how you propose to "iron things out" for a dual county such as ourselves, where 90% or more of players play both club football and club hurling. Some facts to help you with the ironing: - Our inter-county involvement ended when our senior hurlers lost to Clare on Saturday June 18. - Club championships here are based on our long-standing preferred structure of two groups of six (so five group games), followed by quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finals. So eight rounds of games needed in both hurling and football. - Some of the championships started the weekend immediately after our county team was beaten (so June 25/26), while the rest began midweek on Tuesday June 28/Wednesday June 29. - We then proceeded to play our championships on 15 of the following 16 weekends, before finishing with our football finals on October 15/16, in order to have teams qualified for Leinster championships on October 22/23. The weekend off was to give players a short break between the completion of the hurling championships and the start of the football. It actually ended up being needed for a replay of one of the hurling finals. So now, pray tell how you propose to iron things out so that a true dual county where the vast majority of people play both games can have things finished earlier, just so provincial championships can start earlier for counties who concentrate 90% or more on only one code? How are you going to do that without slashing the number of games we provide to our club players? Pray tell. Pikeman96 (Wexford) - Posts: 2833 - 26/10/2022 13:33:26 2445507 Link 1 |
If Cavan started the championship in July and finished in August what would clubs be doing until the Provincial club championship in November? FoolsGold (Cavan) - Posts: 2872 - 26/10/2022 14:20:03 2445513 Link 1 |

Don't think there's a county outside of UIster that plays straight knockout, club leagues are played while intercounty season is in full flow, clubs play without county players, there essentially glorified challenge games.

To be fair Croke Park is aiming to budget for 6 rounds of championship in each code. It's very hard for much else to be done. This is part of my point though. If you move Provincial club to the New Year you can let counties do what they want in terms of playing their competitions and it's on them if they want to play it late. Right now it's stupid for a county board to finish early and have their champions sitting around doing nothing and possibly going up against a team that's straight out of their county championship campaign. Develop a championship format that gives players more games and isn't finished as quickly.

Tyrone system isn't the way to go. Players shouldn't be waiting until the end of September and bear in mind Tyrone were knocked out on June 5th.
