He's clearly not 'new' ! my point is that we would be lost without the old reliables to an extent ? Ok Paddy Lynch certainly stepped up against Leitrim, but it's about having that consistency of performance ? wil he be the man against Sligo ?

Shouldn't be relying on the old relibables in Division 4. If young players don't emerge now, when will they? as Ray Galligan, Martin Reilly and McKiernan are in the Twilight of their County careers.

Agree with you totally FoolsGold… if young players are not able to step up to the mark in Division 4 what hope will they have against the big boys in the Ulster Championship….?

Ah now. McKiernan is 31? Loads left at that age when players play into their mid 30s easily these days. Get your point on Galligan and Marty though, however both look super fit and look to have years left in them yet. Marty is an absolute freak of a specimen at his age, and Galligan in goals can go on for a while yet.

And we can't have it both ways. We need to get out of this division, no point using just youth if we can't get out. The best way to use youth is to integrate a few yearly into an established team and go from there. And we're doing that. No team in Ireland could go without iconic and established players as those 3. Yet we're bringing in Lynch, Cormac O'Reilly, Cian Madden and so on last few games. Youth only adds if they can come in and learn from the ones who've been there and done that. Add in the age profile of a lot of others and it's a good team overall with the right blend of youth and experience and everything in between. It's exactly where you want a team to be.

Sligo now the big match…. It's hard to gauge them after their miss match with Carlow…. Carlow are in serious trouble and word was they were struggling to get lads to travel to Sligo….

McKiernan is still young enough yes ,but has been on the Cavan panel since 19 or 20 and the wear of County football ,while it hasn't taken its toll on him yet , next year or 23 might show signs.

And there isn't loads playing into their mid 30s. Tiernan McConnell retired recently at 30. Paul Mannion lost the hunger for County football at 28.
James O D while he had injury problem could have played on another year or 2 but retired at 31..

Agree totally with that…. 32/33 is now a rare enough to see at county level… the demands and ware and tear is just too great… Lads are getting fed up with the over workload associated with playing county football… and it's hard to blame them..

Players don't play into their mid-30s anymore, if anything, they are retiring earlier and earlier with each decade as the demands of the game are too great.

I think the point is that if the demands don't force you out and you have the desire - both big ifs, then players nowadays will have the conditioning and fitness to play at a high level into their mid-thirties. It strikes me that Gearoid, Marty and Ray all intend sticking with things a bit longer and have the drive and fitness to do so.

What's the thoughts for Sunday fellas? I'm looking forward to the trip to Sligo, haven't been there is quite a while for a game. Must be 2013 in Division 3 since we were last there at Markieviez? Anyway, looks to be our toughest match of this league. They seem to be in good form, although hard to know with that thrashing of Carlow. It's the tightest match we'll have this league anyway, and we need to be in the right frame of mind going into this. Had a weeks break, few injuries healed up maybe, and hopefully we can get the job done here. The weather is looking poor enough, so might be low enough scoring, but we've shown v Leitrim that we can get by the conditions as required. Think we've enough to sneak it by 2 points, but it'll be tight. Draw could be there too

Did Spillane bring you up some yerra when he came up to ye? Any Kerry man would be proud of that...

Know you're winding, but think it'll be a good tight game, in what looks like bad weather. 2 good sides in form, it'll be interesting

Cavan should be winning this but two good sides in form is pushing it a bit…. If we were that good we wouldn't be in division 4….this will test Cavan somewhat as conditions will be a leveller but any dropping of points in this division is unacceptable in my view…. A win by 4/5pts is the call..

Cavan Should be winning by 3/4 points I think. Sligo are weak centrally and at the Carlow game Carlow just let them have their short kick outs. It will be different story with Cavan squeezing their kick outs. Their big threat inside is Murphy but Faulkner would be fit for him I think. If Cavan come with intensity they will have most of the ball. The question is can they get some scores as we have seen they are still struggling in the forward areas. Still I expect Sligo will put it up to us but the bookies have us at 2/5 for a reason.

Another forward needs to step up now ! in fairness Paddy Lynch did against Leitrim and Gearóid the last day ! !
Can't fault our forwards, hoping for more from Tom Galligan !
Who will pick up Niall Murphy ? trust me he's a baller ! !

Are Sligo a good side ? I don't think many would consider them a good side tbh.

Well they seem to be, seeing as they're top of the table with us, and that hammering of Carlow. Now it might (and probably will) prove that Carlow are very bad, but Sligo need respect. They're probably one of the strongest in this Division outside us, so we need to watch that. I still think we'll beat them, even being away.
