Replying To Loughduff Lad:  "He takes the long shots to be fair, from 45m+ in all weather. He doesn't take ones from 30m in and such. The ones he takes are never guaranteed and are hard so he will miss some. Can't believe that some are giving out about it. He's a very good free taker from that distance. Sure we have an Ulster title due to that free he scored from over 55 metres against Monaghan? He will miss some, but we need that option. Can't believe this is even being discussed...."
The rule for taking free kicks from the hand needs to change so as to encourage lads to kick frees from the ground…… it's a great skill of the game that has been lost hence all these goalkeepers trudging up the field to take freees ….. every kick taking far too much time.. I agree that Galligan can be good from 45s and the like but would you not rather have one of your outfield players who would have the skill level to take them….?

It has not been lost. There are many who do it, but it is a hard skill that is simply beyond a lot of players. It's why we can name off the top of our head the handful of players who can do it very well. Why you would want to change this rule is simply ridiculous. If someone wants to take a free out of their hands from 30m out, then so be it. It's called football, as kicking out of hands be it from play or from play is a skill we develop in players. We have many issues in football, but this isn't one that needs sorting. Again, it is highly weird the issue you have with this. It really isn't as good as you think it used to be. Are you maybe misremembering football from the good ol' days?

Anyway, back to this weekend. Wexford come to town. With McKiernan back and a hard competitive match under a lot of fellas now, we should see the lads start to open up a bit when we get back to a good pitch. Weather not meant to be great, so might be a little bit of tough going, but we should have too much for Wexford here. Would like to see some of our more experienced players get a handle on this game (where they didn't against Leitrim), and would like to see our young forwards develop a little bit more and get a good run. Likes of Marty back too will be great for the team. We should take a good win here

In fairness is there as much time spent on players to develop long distance free taking.
James O Donoghue on the football pod mentioned they were obsessed with his GPS stats.
A lot of teams like to play possession through the hands football, which is worked on the training ground. The skill of free taking is probably an after thought

Sports move on as the physical implications become widely recognised.

Oisin McOnville has said that he suffered from back problems as a result of the repetitive strain of kicking frees off the ground.

If that's the case why are 45s or penalties not taken from the hand….? It's called football as you say… Frees out of the hand was primarily brought in to speed up the game out of defence or line balls ( which it has by the way) … but free kicks intended to result in a score should be taken from the ground… 45s have to be taken from the ground… if this was the case you would see a lot more outfield players more capable of striking the ball of the ground as a lot more practice would have to be put in… I'm just trying to make a point

If that was a true case in fact then every goalkeeper that ever played would end up in big trouble as they have always kicked the ball of the ground ( kick outs and now frees ) 4/5 times more than any free taker during a match….putting full effort in as its only recently short kick outs came into vogue…. The tee might help a little but I'd say Oisin might have picked up his back problems some other way……!!

The kickout technique is different to the free kick technique.

I'm no expert. Oisin was just relaying what a doctor had advised him.

Ronan Carolan is another that will need a hip replacement if he hasn't got one all ready. According to bar stool talk.

Be careful what you ask for. If a team is forced to kick frees from the ground and they don't have a good kicker, then the opposition just has to keep fouling anytime they pass midfield. We're just emerging after all that double sweeper/ blanket defense horror show. Leave it be

Another win today but it's a pity we are not able to get a goal or two against teams it this division… It's something that has ailed Cavan for years now… We haven't had a real goal poacher since Jason Reilly..!

It's rare that Cavan win by six points and I'm disappointed but the second half today was very poor. We were nine or ten points up at half time so why not push on? Sligo have made a statement today by absolutely battering Carlow.

We came out in the second half and greatly lacked intensity. A high amount of backs on the pitch also and Martin Reilly & Madden brought on when I would have been more interested in seeing someone like Caoimhin Reilly get a few more minutes.

Agree with the substitutions. Why didn't we use the opportunity today to test some new forwards? What's going on with Thomas the Bun, Ryan Connolly and Paul Smith not being able to make the panel when we're desperate for forwards and these guys lighting up the club championship last year.
Instead we get the standard 2 minute Niall Murray cameo and stall the development of the younger talent in the county that have a lot more to offer.

We started today with 3 recognised forwards - McKiernan, Lynch & Reilly - in the six so we were stunted from the start. I hope to god poor Liam Brady gets a run out too. Ray Galligan is a great keeper but even Cluxton used to let his understudy get some action in the League.

Good win yesterday. We had the measure of them practically from the start, and by half time we had the game sewed up. There was some really good play that half, with some cracking points from Gerry Smith (outside of his foot, very like his one against Monaghan 2020), James Smith, and GMac. We used the wind very well, and really they did not look up to much. And in fact were being quite dirty and trying to drag our fellas into a fight more than trying to play football.

The 2nd half was disappointing, if not unexpected. You'd like to think they'd keep the foot on their throat, but I suppose when you have a lead like that, it's perhaps understandable that we eased up. We always did have enough to keep them at arms length.

The biggest issue for me is that we still can't get goals. We might get away with that in a lot of matches this year, but we need to start scoring them. In fact, it did look like we tried today with certain moves. That's probably why we looked a bit disjointed in the 2nd half, as we weren't taking our points by trying to pass the ball in to try score goals. And that was hard with the way they brought men back and crowded that part of the field. Anyway, still did enough and Marty scored a few nice points when he came on too to make sure we were always comfortable. We've no issue with scoring points, and that'll be enough for this division, but goals is a concern that we need to sort out. Sligo next day out looks like it'll be the match that will decide who wins this division.

A win is a win is a win ! Job done and the 2 points secured BUT the main concern for me out of the starting forwards, if you take out G Mac and P Lynch's close in free, none of them scored. Also Thomas Galligan certainly not at the level he was at when we won Ulster ? The old guard (Faulkner, K Clarke, Gunner, G Mac, Marty Reilly, G Smith) are our 'go to' men !
Who's stepping up of the new guard ? ? Should be some match in Markievicz ! !

I wouldn't have a huge concern about that just yet. No team plays with 6 out and out forwards, it's probably around 3 to 4, like us. And with that, some of the backs were playing very far forward. Gerry Smith and Oisin Kiernan spent a lot of time up there supporting when needed. Seems to be the way of the games these days. Numbers on the back seem to count for very little bar a couple of positions. The half backs and half forwards are fluidly mixing at all times, and as long as we've enough who can score going forward when needed (as we did well enough yesterday) then it's fine. Would like to see where we are when we get Pierson back, and maybe Conor Madden back into form. But the days of many recognised forwards is long gone I think

Would you count Oisin Kiernan as New guard or Old Guard?
