Yeah I recall that alright. Although to be fair, we don't have Kilkenny now. We have Waterford and Carlow though (both has 20 point hammerings this year), and they meet Kerry and Dublin regular enough in their provinces. With an a and b system, likes of Kerry should not be down there anyway. Like if it was redrew now, you'd have the Divisions 1 and 2 mixed up and redrawn together as 1a and 1b, and same for Division 3 and 4 for 2a and 2b. Think it'd be decent and mixes things up better and prevents the ladder being pulled up a bit in Division 1. I know for example, if were were playing in it in our time in Division 1 and 2, we'd be exposed to like of top teams, but also likes of Div 2 teams too. We'd be able to develop without risk of a whitewash against 7 Divisions 1 teams, we'd get more wins I'd imagine. I think it'd help, but not going to happen anyway

Probably won't happen so the best way out of it for us is to get promoted again next season….and it's well within our capabilities..

Jaysus made hard work of that, but broke the duck, and won a cup in Croker. Let's enjoy this for a while before anything else. Congrats and well done lads Loughduff Lad (Cavan) - Posts: 2488 - 02/04/2022 16:11:33 2409072 Link 0 |

It was, but a cup in Croker is not to be sniffed at, especially since we lost the last 4 or so League finals in the last 15 years we were at there, and we're against a bogey side for us who beat us at home 3 weeks ago. Were you not all saying we needed to win the cup? And we did, and broke a duck doing so. Won it when only playing in patches and very poor otherwise. Honestly our supporters are the pits...

Fully agree on preparing for Championship, I've been saying that all along here. But don't doubt the benefit of winning a cup in Croker against a bogey team

A win but my God it was woeful stuff to watch…but then again it is Div 4 standard.. Have to start with our keeper Galligan…. it was embarrassing seeing him coming up constantly kicking balls wide to the left all the time.. is nobody on the pitch or line able to stop that nonsense .. Mc Kiernan and Gerry Smith not at the races… McLaughlin put in a good shift and was the reason we got the 2nd goal… Paddy Lynch took his 2 goals very well but his work rate out of possession is very poor… This sort of performance and way of playing football will be no good come Championship… ForeverBlue2 (Cavan) - Posts: 4243 - 03/04/2022 10:08:43 2409161 Link 0 |

Good to get the win and good to get promotion . The type of game we play with so much lateral and back passing is not easy on the eye. But we are not the only county playing that kind of dire football. The only time we let the ball forward or pressed was when we were behind on the scoreboard. I can't understand why more direct ball is not kicked into the full forward line. Tipp could have snatched the game late on with the direct ball that troubled or full back line. We could take a leaf out of the direct style that Louth played in the game after ours. Breffni1969 (Cavan) - Posts: 510 - 03/04/2022 13:58:28 2409202 Link 0 |

Great to win and great to be promoted which is all we could have asked for at the start of the year. Both goals very well taken and the second in particular showing the benefit of attacking / running at pace instead of all the zero risk passing sideways and backwards. It works against weaker teams, but will only ever help keep the score down rather than winning against stronger teams. If you're going to go down, go down at least trying to win. More and more teams moving on evolving their game to a more direct style after years of negative dross. Let's hope we don't get left too far behind. Trust the players we have to play ball, they are well able. Calving4Sam (Cavan) - Posts: 91 - 03/04/2022 14:14:34 2409206 Link 0 |

So what to make of Saturday then? On one hand we again didn't put in a full performance by only playing in patches, got outscored 12-15 by the opposition, a lot of wides and dropped balls, some decision making was poor, and nearly got caught at the end only for the crossbar and just about clung on. On the other hand we beat one of our bogey teams who beat us at home 3 weeks ago, we broke a 70 year duck by winning a final in Croke Park and lifting a cup, we took 2 of the goal chances we got, we created some really good chances, and we won while not playing all that well. A very mixed bag it's fair to say. Loughduff Lad (Cavan) - Posts: 2488 - 04/04/2022 10:10:46 2409437 Link 1 |

Very good post and agree with most of it. Well done to the team on Saturday and great to get the win in croker, but I thought we were going to shoot our self's in the foot again I watched Cavan in London and the first 8-10 minutes we blew London away and they couldn't get near us I think we hit a goal and five points in that time and then we fell asleep although managed to keep our noses in front it could easily have gone the other way , against a better team we would have been caught and there was some of that on Saturday as well just hope that's ironed out before the championship. On another note thought Kerry were really good yesterday they showed how to get the ball forward in the quickest possible way ie accurate kick passes short and long and at pace and very little hand passes especially backwards or sideways. Hopefully other county's will copy please including my own as it's much more exciting Up Cavan.

I really hope it was just a case of getting over that final hump. Maybe now we have it done, we can push on. We've won many games this year by not playing well, and only playing in 10 minute patches. That was enough in that division, but won't be going forward. Hence why I'm hoping we're holding back a little. Kerry went full bore yesterday, but Mayo looked to be holding back too and were missing players. It's very hard to know what to take from the League, I guess we'll really see in a few weeks. I do feel that we can challenge most teams if we play the way we can see, and put together a 50/60 minute performance, rather than 10 minutes. We really need to push on with our goals though. We couldn't score them early on in the League, and on Saturday we scored them but then didn't follow up with another punch. If anything we went to sleep. We let them score 4 on the trot after our first goal, and then 2 after our 2nd. They wiped out the lead and momentum these goals got us. If we stretched our lead out to 5 or 6 after the 1st goal, we could have sewn this up early, rather than letting them back in. Also to be fair though, their 9 Russell scored 4 worldies of points which effectively kept them in it as well. Look, we got the win, but lots to work on for 3 weeks time too. As another poster said Kerry let the ball in to the forwards quick. Breffni1969 (Cavan) - Posts: 510 - 04/04/2022 13:24:32 2409514 Link 0 |

I thought Tipperary were pretty woeful on Saturday.. Apart from Sweeny who roasted our full back line and their no 9 Russell who thankfully came off before he beat us on his own with long range points… 4 of the best you would see anywhere… The man in front of me turned around and said "we should be beating these out the gate "… I replied " if we were able to do that we wouldn't be playing them in the first place"… He said you cannot argue with that…! That's our problem our slow build up and cross field passes and backwards passing just keeps poor teams within a score of us all the time…. Letting Wicklow beat us is a real case in point…and there are more examples too… Antrim aren't up to much but the way our management has set up the team will insure they will be in the game right to the end and this is my big worry….. Only for the crossbar Tipperary would have won the game on Saturday and it was purely down to bad play on our behalf…. It's hard to see any future in playing football this way…. most of Saturdays game was a snore fest and 2-10 was a woeful return for an almost perfect day for playing football….
