Finally a score line and a performance that was needed in this division… we just might be clicking into form at the right time… now let's win the final and end this League Final defeat hoodoo that we have… It would be the perfect boost before the Antrim game….!

Indeed. Finally clicked together a performance that was more than 10 mins. Yes it was against a very poor Waterford team though. Still left a lot behind us though, with a few more goal chances and a lot of wides too. Hopefully that is us clicking and starting to peak maybe. Just great to see us running up that score...

Anyone know nature of Martin Reillys injury & if he will be back soon ? He's a huge loss, apart from being our most experienced player he gives us another option inside.

So with the other results today, Division 3 next year will be Cavan and Tipp up from Div 4, Down and Offaly down from Div 2, Antrim, Westmeath, Fermanagh, and Longford staying where they are. Interesting Division. Bar Tipp, its all Midlands or North of that so no huge travel. 4 Ulster teams, and no reason we wouldn't give that a good rattle.

Hopefully whoever is manager will allow the team to play with a bit more freedom like last night.

A Saturday night game in Thurles would be nice. Nothing else to get overly excited about in terms of away trips. Belfast maybe.

But yeah, we should aiming for promotion, no question.

With all due respect to Waterford they have to be the worst team we have played in years, gave the ball away cheaply on many occasions, lost count of the amount of times they were pulled for over carrying and once Faulkner moved on to their number 13 any threat they had was nullified. Our lads did what they had to do and finished the league in style.Good riddance to division 4 and hopefully we never find ourselves there again.

Yep. Good riddance. They were very bad. We were good, but left at least 2-10 behind us on top of what we scored as well. They were that bad.

I said the same a while ago. Get promoted, forget it, and never go there again. Now let's win a final on Saturday and move to Championship...

So just a few of my thoughts on the weekend. We got the win, as expected, and it was finally a big one. The type of win we always knew we could have in this Division, and we signed off the group games with it and sealed promotion (thank the lord we're out of there). So we go 6 from 7, 12 points, top of the table. This is as I expected, I always felt we might trip up in one game. And I'm fine with that. Actually more than fine: as we get a chance to rectify that on Saturday when it matters in a final. They got the rub a lot a few weeks ago, and will need that and more on Saturday. We can show how we have learned and turned things around, and hopefully we come out as we can and play the game we can in Croker.

As for last Saturday, it took a few moments to get going, to figure things out, but we did and coasted our way home from there. A lovely evening for football, wasn't much of a wind, but we played 1st half for once with the little bit that there was. Our defence has been poor last 2 games, and it took a few scores for them (their 13 was a handful) before we got their measure. Gunner and Faulkner swapped players they were marking and we were then able to snuff them out. But still took our time. The Galligan goal was class, Smith was good when he went in on the square, but we also hit a lot of wides and missed more goal chances. We easily left another 2-10 behind us only for wayward shooting and picking the wrong option. We're trying though, and it's clicking more and more each week. Not much more to say, the 2nd half was facile enough as we just cruised home, and the late goals put a nice complexion on things. No doubt Waterford are a very poor team though, so pinch of salt needed there.

On to the final now. No reason we shouldn't continue progressing and get a good win here to leave us sitting nicely when travelling to Antrim. This is the time to start to motor and peak, not last month. Those earlier results won't matter so much if we finish this strongly. We're going to be 6 weeks in a row on the go, but that shouldn't faze us. No sign of Marty, Oisin Kiernan was in the stands not togged out, Cormac O'Reilly had a knock. Still lads to come in if needed so we've options, likes of Caoimhin with his cameo puts his hand up to start. I feel we owe Tipp one here for a few weeks ago, and also to make a marker against a fellow provincial winner from 2020 (who we now get lumped in with in conversation). People will be intrigued with this as it's live on TG4. We need to go out, get the win, break this final duck at Croker, and show where we really are. Then build it from there to Championship. Looking forward to the trip already.

Anything other than a win on Saturday will not be good going forward….. We have a bad record in recent meetings with Tipperary but they are only a shadow of the team that won the Munster Championship a couple of years ago…. We missed a lot of goal chances when we clashed a few weeks ago so we know we can open them up… A nice comfortable win before the Antrim game is what's needed… plus it's high time we ended our dreadful record in league finals when playing in Croker…

Next weekend will show whether we have built up any momentum.

There's no doubt that for 2 of Mickey's 3 seasons in charge, there is a marked step up come championship time. I don't agree with the way we have approached the league, but Ulster championship results have been relatively ok under his tenure, so it awaits to be seen whether that will continue.

Next weekend should be about putting in a comprehensive winning performance. Tipp are not the same side that won Munster, they have lost many of their key players since that win, and so we should be winning this game with a bit to spare.

Lift the cup and onwards to the Antrim game.

Think I must be going mad when I'm agreeing with the bulk of ForeverBlue2 and Cavan_Shambles posts above! We should be targeting this game and building to Antrim. Don't think it'll be very comfortable, or with a bit to spare. Finals rarely are, and we've a monkey to get off our back on our finals record at Croker. Tipp will step up for this too. A win will do for me, anything more comfortable will be a welcome bonus though.

I think we are all singing off the same hymn sheet when it comes to Cavan football…. It just depresses me that we have let our standards tumble so low that we ended up in Div 4…. We are back up thank goodness but still a long road back to where Mickey found the team… There's no reason in the world we can't emulate Monaghan and aim for a sustainable stay in one of the top divisions… Monaghan are now there 10/11 years which is incredible… Playing the likes of Dublin Kerry and Mayo every season can only be good for players and supporters… that's the standard they have set for themselves and staying up there is a magnificent achievement… I know Loughduff Lad you don't seem to mind lower league football but to me we will have wasted at least 3 years tinkering around in division 3/4 which is no good… I still think we will have enough experience to get over Antrim but then one of the bigger teams await and our lack of matches against good quality opposition might catch us out big time….

This is where you keep getting me wrong. I never wanted to be down here. It's not like I don't mind it, I hate it. I just saw the way the results fell in the last 2 relegations, and the separation in League and Championship results. But make no mistake, I did not want to be down there. I also think we've wasted a few years also. We had an opportunity to consolidate as a top team when up there, or at least stabilise around Div 2, with an odd journey up or down. But I have reconciled that and differentiated with out Ulster final appearances and win. That's always been my point, and you keep missing it. Division 4 does not define us.

It's possible to think this, but also think there is a difference between the 2. I also thought it was an opportunity to try things. We've seen the emergence of Paddy Lynch properly, Finnegan and Madden, while other lads like Cormac O'Reilly pushed into first 15 status. It wasn't for me a win each game by 10+ points, but learn and develop where we can, and with the battles we have had it's better long term. I really do think in years to come, this will stand to the lads. I fully expect we'll get promoted next year too

Think you hit the nail on the head there. Getting out of Div 3 next year at the 1st attempt hopefully will be priority .
Any success after the Antrim game this year would be a bonus.
And as regards the league final Tipperary are probably not as good as they were when they won Munster a few years ago . But they are probably the best team we have faced so far. So it would be good to get the win on Saturday

By thy way, I should add that I do think we are singing off the sane hymn sheet, once we do get to championship.

And I'd hazard caution re Monaghan. I think they could do with an odd relegation here and there to develop. I actually don't think hanging on every year in Div 1 is overall good for them. I feel they're close to a drop off a cliff (despite how yesterday went for them) next few years when the older players move on. To be fair, they won Ulster in 2013 from Div 3, but overall bar an All Ireland Semi in 2018, what has being in Division 1 meant for them the last 6 years? Not much if we're honest. You'd expect a Div 1 mainstay to have a better Championship record than that. They peak too early for me as they try to stay in Division 1. I think there's a middle ground somewhere between Cavan and Monaghan to reach, where you're decent in League, but ready and fully firing for Championship.
