Replying To CARPS:  "Forgot to come back on this... sorry, there's no way it was all down to Poacher. No more than beating Tipperary this year was all down to Niall Carew. The players have to be there. And Poacher had decent players... his skill was in organizing them... the more competitive club championships encourage guys to commit.

as for "clonmore were far too strong for junior." If so, why did they need a final replay to win the title?

As for sticking to the eight team formats? Well, I have say Fenagh's poor display today in Leinster suggests we should he thinking about a six team seniors and intermediate. That was very poor. Against Wicklow: 17 points to 6?

How about Senior next year: Bagenalstown, Eire Og, Mt Leinster, Palatine, Rathvilly, Tinryland,

Intermediate: Ballinabranna, Fenagh, Kilbride, Kildavin, Myshall, Old Leighlin

Junior A: Clonmore, Eire Og 2, Grange, O'Hanrahan's, Leighlinbridge, Tullow

Junior B: Bagenalstown 2, Ballon, Fighting Cocks, Old Leighlin 2, Palatine 2, Tinryland 2

Junior C: Asca, Ballinabranna 2, Fenagh , Kildavin 2, St Mullins, Rathvilly 2

All teams play each once, Top 4 go into semis, bottom two into relegation. Everyone guaranteed 6 games. That's two more than at present.

Can put the other 10 teams into a Junior D with two groups of five, I guess."
We will have to agree to disagree on that, in 2016 carlow were annialted by louth in the championship, it looked like there wasn't much point in even fielding anymore, the same group of players went on to a leinster semi two years later after easing past louth and kildare, poacher was definitely the difference.

I actually find myself agreeing with a 6 team senior, on a league basis that's 5 games then straight to a final with the top two. Bottom team relegated.
I'd still go with a larger intermediate as I think the gap between intermediate and top teams in junior is small enough, I think clonmore would have been in contention in intermediate just like they were last year it has to be remembered it was a late goal by eire og that relegated them, I think championship structures should be fluid though and constantly assessed our leagues need to include promotion and relegation and should be run on a home/away basis, club players need more game, same goes for juvenile they need more games.

Well done to palatine and clonmore, two very good performances

Very disappointing day for Pal yesterday - OK, I'm from Laois but I would like to see Carlow teams and clubs do well in general. That little spell just before HT probably cost Pal the game. Port will hammer a lot of teams once they get 4 or 5 points ahead.
Losing Crowley was a huge blow too. Still a good year for them overall.

Pal can't have any complaints about the result, Port better all over the field and really, a standard above Pal. Game plan was abit naïve IMO, way to open playing against a team like that, who move the ball at pace and have some very quick and dangerous forwards. Not saying it would have changed the outcome, but you could tell after 5 mins they were going to struggle to contain them.

But still, great year for them. County champions and a win in Leinster was alot more than many would have expected.

Also, great win for Clonmore on Saturday. Leinster semi at home in two weeks. Real opportunity for them now to get to a Leinster final.

Hard not to disagree with your assessment. Pal have had a better than expected year with a Leinster win v St Pat's capping off a good year for them.
Port are a very good balanced side who play football in a serious way in that they have their homework done and know how to exploit weaknesses and yesterday showed their preparation beforehand. Credit to Port.
Their match against Kilmacud will be interesting and I believe they have chance too !

Goodyear for pal, bad ending but portarlington are a seasoned team who will give kilmacud all they want of it in the semi, losing crowley was a disaster and removed the only threat pal carried really.
Great win for clonmore, with 15 mins to go it looked like straffan would push on and win but clonmore dug in and got some good turnovers, the kildare side were physical but maybe lacked the fitness of clonmore late on, some great scores for clonmore when they really needed them.

Would many clubs in Carlow have outside managers?

Good question, probably half or somewhere in that ball park.

Can't see the relevance of the question, we're no different to most other counties.

He's doing an expose for ABC News Australia on payments to managers in Carlow... Tread carefully.

Great win for St Mullins today beating the Wexford champions. Half back line immense as was Paul Doyle.
Marty brilliant as always same as James Doyle.

But Jack Kavanagh was the difference between the teams.

Croke Park now in 2 weeks against Kilmacud Crokes

Great game and result yesterday for St Mullins. For two teams that haven't played a competitive game in 3 months, it was a very good pace and standard. Game probably shouldn't have been as close as it was in the end, St Mullins missed 3 very good goal chances in the first half, but hopefully they will be sharper against Kilmacud.

I know players are probably delighted to get a day out in Croker, but I really don't like bringing the semi's to HQ. The atmosphere in the grounds yesterday was great, which will be completely lost in a mostly empty stadium. Think it also benefits teams like Kilmacud and Ballyhale, playing on the bigger pitch.

On the croke park thing you make a very valid point but I think there's 2 factors, could be a once in a lifetime opportunity for players to play in Croke Park as you mentioned. But secondly, you're guaranteed a good playing surface all year round in Croke Park which isn't the same in all venues this time of the year. i remember last winter watching Ballygunner and Loughmore on the TV and the pitch in Dungarvan was in bad condition, Parnell Park was meant to have been in a poor state for the games at the weekend. I was away the last couple so couldn't comment on the pitch in Dr Cullen Park.

Some exhibition of hurling from both Ferns and St Mullins yesterday and the best team won.
The few golf chances missed by St Mullins might have guarantèd a loss in previous ye but this particular team has largely been at this juncture before and the addition of the wily and astute Maurice Ayleard is having a positive effect. St m did not fear Ferns and so did not have any period where they did not play well Nd when they missed those golf chances they did not change away from their game plan.
The fact that they had a fair few practice games over the past few months benefitted them as well.

Ferns never gave up the ghost either and it was very exciting in the last quarter. Quality of hurling was high too and Marty scoring 11 from 11 was superb.
A few times St Mullins looked vulnerable but they clawed their way back with all players contributing to a well deserved victory.
As for Croke Park... its great that all players can get a chance to play there for their club now. It's actually fantastic. Delighted for their management and all the panel.
I am sure that quite a few St Mullins players were thinking about Croke Park in their sleep last night. It's the place to be...
Its where we all have dreamt about playing and its so few who get that chance.
And don't forget - it's a place where players can absolutely shine !

Good showing by Clonmore on Saturday, but just fell short in the end. Discipline and wayward shooting really let them down on the day. Castletown dominated f playing against 14/13 in the final 15 or so minutes.

But still, great campaign for Clonmore, who will relish intermediate next year.

Agree that Clonmore had a great year but they will be disappointed with last weekends performance.
Their lack of scoring power hit them half on thee day. McGrath getting a black card in the second half was massively important as he looked like the only player to be capable.of scoring if he got the right ball. When he returned late on he again personally fouled and got a red which knocked the wind out off the Clonmoe sails. But all through- Clonmore just were not able to get into positions to score. The Meath boys were young direct and were determined. After the game you could clearly see it meant a lot to Castletown too.
Clonmore have had a good Leinster campaign and will rattle the Intermediate next year.

Best of luck to St Mullins today, hopefully they can do themselves justice and maybe even get a positive result.

Sadly , today was not their day. Kilmacud had too much for the Carlow side.

Yes Kilmacud were just that bit sharper on the day. St Mullins started the better but failed to put it on the scoreboard. The crokes corner back should have been sent off but don't think it would of affected the outcome. Some good performances by st Mullins particularly conor kehoe and paddy boland. It's been a good season for them and they should be proud of themselves to a man.

St Mulliins could not get any fluency on the day and the speed of Crokes was a big factor all through.
One or two things did not go to plan for Mullins but Crokes are a well drilled and strong outfit and were troubled a few times and were willing to foul close to goals and take a card rather than concede a goal.
St Mullins needed to start well but just fell a little short in that department.
But St Mullins never threw in the towel and fought hard to the finish. They are to be admired for that and the Croke Park factor which often sees teams wilt was not a factor.
Great credit is due to the management team for an excellent campaign at Carlow and Leinster level.
In Leinster terms and in particular looking at Sundays teams St Mullins were real minnows when looking at the numbers.

Agree with you that Boland and Kehoe were excellent and that the Crokes corner back was lucky to escape a red... not sure that if he had gotten a red that it would not have affected the result but would have made a difference. And yes all the players should be very proud of their performances. A credit to their club.
