What was lucky about the goal? it was well worked into the target man who laid it off to Murtagh to score, something we should have done much earlier. We had 30 shots on goal to Galways 28 and we won 32 of the 51 kick outs. The dominance Galway got was scoring on the counter attack which was thanks to poor Roscommon defending and turnovers 14 v 7 in favour of Galway.

Anyone who thinks Roscommon were remotely competitive in Connacht final is delusional. It was over as a contest by 50th minute, Galway operating at a different level to Roscommon.

Agreed.

Teams operating at different levels in Pearse Staidum that day, no matter what way the Rossies dress it up.

Best of luck to Galway tomorrow. Roscommon are a poor team unfortunately. We were poor in the Connacht Final and we were poor against a Clare team demolished and exposed in Croke Park today. Roscommon have some good players but it's just not happening. One championship win in three years says it all and Sligo may well have competed with us if they had 15 players. It's hugely disappointing for gaa people in Roscommon and the team has huge support as we saw again in Salthill. I don't know about Galway but I hope they win tomorrow.

Galway had the better system of play and structure to their team and by 50 minutes in the final was theirs to lose however the main stats from the Connacht final was Galway only won by 3 points and conceded 2-16. To see where Roscommon went after that Connacht final defeat and who they lost to highlights Galway will need to up their performance levels for 70 minutes in order to beat Armagh tomorrow

What Rossies are is dressing it up? its well talked over that this stage and nothing i said directly after the game has changed much. As to be competitive that arguably means to within a score or two from the opposition who was favourites.

I have Galway down to win tomorrow due to their system but no doubt the Connacht final performance won't be good enough to beat Armagh side with momentum of beating two Div 1 teams.

Also to add we'd have been hammered by Derry today too their physicality is way ahead of where we're at !
Still think they'll be beat by any one of Armagh dublin Kerry or Mayo"
You are forgetting about Galway. A glorious chance to reach AI semi final wasted against Clare. It was set up for our half of the draw to have a potential final clash against Dublin/Kerry

Derry put that so called glorious chance to bed today. Roscommon would not have beaten them

Never dismiss garbage time goals

100% i doubt any Galway supporter will ever again dismiss it after today. Still managed to win the lottery of a penalty shootout.

Never! Armagh were middling and actually looked tired in normal time. Galway will need to up it for Derry, although Galway do have the forwards to win it.

Not much lottery about that penalty shootout. Galway's penalties were all excellent. Padraic Joyce confirmed that Galway's 5 penalty takers had been practising taking them at training sessions in the expectation that one of their matches would be decided on penalties. Separately, Galway and their goalkeeper are very poor under the high ball. Roscommon got a goal late on with a high ball in the Connacht Final. It's a pity we didn't employ that tactic more often in Salthill.

He also said penalties shouldn't in place for All Ireland championship. Felt very sorry for Armagh fair play to him for being honest. Another mistake by HQ.

All teams club or county have been practising taking them at training sessions. You can take a good penalty and it can come off the head of the keeper who guessed to dive the same way of the shot no amount of practise will change that. The penalty shootouts they have in hockey would be less of a lottery.

We didn't really exploit the Galway goalkeeper at all same on the Clare keeper who is even worse. As i said already the high ball tactic should have been used earlier but it wasn't until Glennon was brought on did we have a target man. Ciaran Lennon would be ideal player for such tactics next year if he chooses to commit.

Hopefully watching the games at the weekend the Roscommon management and team can turn the disappointment of missing out on the quarter finals into driving them on next year. Maybe they need a bit of that pain and to see what Galway , Derry and Armagh have achieved since pushing on over the past coupleof years. Roscommon are not a million miles from those teams but intensity IS miles off and a coherent defensive strategy needs to be implemented. Galway clearly upped the intensity levels from the league and developed a better defence. A few more of the U20s need to be brought into the panel to keep lads on their toes.

I myself would hope that the Roscommon management would take heed of what James Horan did. Walking away after a four year term for the betterment of the county, even though they won national leagues and took Dublin off their perch and reached two more All-Ireland finals under him. A classy act by the man to move on I thought. And this business of no other manager will take us on is bull. Roscommon have class all over the field and could put it up to anyone when at their best but that best is what's missing now and can only be brought out by a high energy, focused, experienced football manager ideally with AI success behind them and who is dedicated to seeing Roscommon grow as a team . People saying Roscommon have reached their ceiling is not true. All teams at that level can either push on and upward like Derry / Galway / Armagh. Or they can give up the ghost and drop down through the divisions again. It's essential we get a change of energy into that team this year. One championship win over a D4 team in years and we're still happy to keep on the hurling man and a backroon team that is very inexperienced at intercounty level?

It's the 2nd time that Horan has left after 4 years. To me that's pre planned and probably due to work commitments more than leaving for the betterment of the county.

2016 to 2019 we had a fresh and hungry team in a similar to where Galway,Derry and Armagh are now and who had the potential to reach at least the last 4 of the championship but that was never realised. I fear now looking at the championship result since 2019 that we peaked that summer and if so no amount of added energy will likely stop that slide. A new backroom team was brought in to freshen things up he's a hurling man that has won club and inter county provincial football titles for three different teams and one of the best ever football managers was hurling man a certain Sean Boylan from Meath but even he had to step aside when the best was got out of them.

Good post. Absolutely agree. But Anthony Cunningham will go nowhere unless the County Board say Au Revoir and I doubt the County Board has the imagination to go looking for a new Manager. Horan did a great job in his 2 spells with Mayo. Yes the ultimate prize of the All Ireland evaded him as indeed it has evaded every Mayo Manager since 1951 but Horan turned Mayo into a very professional team winning the League and six Connacht titles. Over the past 15 years, Mayo haven't been much better than Roscommon at underage so he really didn't have much more material to play with than us but he made it pay. When Mayo look back, last year was a real missed opportunity because that Tyrone team was very beatable in the Final.
