Birr was called Parsonstown, the family name of the Earls of Roses. Daingean was formerly called Philipstown, after King Philip. It was the capital of Offaly until the assizes was transferred to Tullamore in the 1820's. Tullamore is now the capital town. Plantations involved replacing local families with foreign settlers from England, Scotland, and Wales. Not much joy for the original landowners. Thanks very much Mick for the correction.

I did not initiate this particular piece of the discussion- I was only responding to another persons comments.

Your own county involved, jaypers you'd never think it such is the restraint and dignity of the Limerick posters here! LOL Don't mention my county, we're finished! We're happily enjoying the holidays! baire (Galway) - Posts: 1849 - 05/08/2021 10:04:21 2367849 Link 0 |
I don't think any serious Cork supporter or hurling person thinks Kilkenny are a one man team……it will be an interesting clash of styles on Sunday, Cork have yet to face an aerial threat like Kilkenny yet TJ is immense under the high ball, Walter on the edge of the square for a while will also be an interesting potential clash….some of younger Kilkenny lads are blending in well too…interestingly I think midfield is where Cork could gain a stranglehold as Kilkenny struggled there in the Leinster final. Anyone who thinks Kilkenny won't have a plan to stifle and clog Cork pace and running is fooling themselves ….I see this very much as a 50/50 game , Kilkenny have had the upper hand on Cork over the last decade bar the match in Thurles….they have a side laced with experience and winners, the only nagging doubt would be how good were Wexford and Dublin who Kilkenny beat but trying to say Clare beat Wexford handier than Kilkenny and Cork beat Clare as a form guide is simply bulls@it Toss of a coin stuff for me but anyone who thinks Kilkenny are a one man team is either a troll or a fool….. You're welcome. It should be Earls of Rosse, not Roses.

Well baire, it is not for nothing that our mission is SPORTING LIMERICK.

Yes indeed, should have said 'Mission Statement'- it is on the jerseys.

Statements are easily written, a bit like political parties with their fine promises! What happens in the heat of battle can be quite unsporting to say the least.

Damien Cahalane back in mix for Cork vs Kilkenny. Wonder if selectors have given consideration to playing him at centre forward? He has played successfully there for his club, and would bring ball winning ability for puck outs etc! Rob Downey has full back berth nailed down, and Millerick is comfortable at left half back! Anytime Damien Cahalane plays Cork do something silly. He's a fine athlete and is very strong and he hasn't made any huge clangers yet this year. However Rob Downey is a much better fullback. Reads the game well and no brain farts. Id leave Cahalane on the bench and use him in the last 15mins. bloodyban (Limerick) - Posts: 1710 - 05/08/2021 12:57:05 2367916 Link 0 |
Damien Cahalane could function in Cork half forward line as Gearoid Hegarty does for Limerick! Am sure it's crossed selectors minds. He has played half forward for St Finbarrs!

even putting cahalane and hegarty in the same sentence makes me cringe.....

Which of them is more likely to strike you in the back?

Honestly it does seem that someone one is on a power trip. I will because I can. Earlier we had 200 at the Clare Waterford game and 6 days latter 5 thousand at the semis.

Hope we get the opportunity to find out! We'll see after this weekend.Henry Shefflin reckons that Kilkenny can starve Cork full forwards of possession, so will try to dominate from half back line. Interesting game, and should be a close one!
