I think the lads are off to Portugal for warm weather training next week? .. Do our Footballers get granted the same privilages MyOhMi (Wexford) - Posts: 170 - 20/03/2025 08:53:29 2597412 Link 0 |
All games are tough at this level. Antrim will have targeted this from way out and Davy knows us. An exceptionally challenging start but if we perform for 70 minutes it's a game we must and will win at home. Dublin. The bogey team. I won't go over all the ifs, buts and maybes. There's very little between us. They're physically superior but we have better hurlers is the simplest way to summarize it. We can win this game but I wouldn't have confidence in us to do it. Galway. A different animal altogether this year I think. This will be extremely tough but we need to keep errors to a minimum and we've a chance. Offaly. They will be dying to beat us to announce their arrival. We're the most beatable of the bigger teams for them. We absolutely have to show up. If we do that I have confidence we'll win. Kilkenny. The highlight of every year. Nothing between us in a given day. We'll have to wait and see what's at stake. In short we've had a bad league but slowly improved. Our season will hinge on putting 5 performances together. Are we capable of a Leinster final? Yes but we'll need to minimize mistakes and some luck to get results against two of the big 3. Is is just as likely we could find ourselves in a relegation dog fight? Could easily happen. Hopefully we get a good performance against Limerick. I heard they're headed off for a warm weather camp then so hopefully we get things right. Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 3461 - 20/03/2025 09:47:52 2597417 Link 0 |
To be fair that's beyond everyone in Leinster. Kilkenny drew with Carlow last year so there'll be bumps in the road for everyone.

They don't have the time - they will be in a league final and then the following Saturday playing in the Championship. At the same time I am not sure warm weather training is a great idea - don't see the point except it gets them all away together for a week - so it perhaps more a a team building exercise than training

I think its a great opportunity for the players. They get to live like professional athletes for a week . Last year we struggled to get a pitch when the lads went to Laois for a training weekend. The lads can get loads of work in improving their hurling , speed and fitness, gym sessions . They will get to have team meetings to go through tactical things and im sure they will have a pool to recover in the evenings with good food. It can only be good for team morale and will bring them more together. It doesnt guarantee success but I cant see any negatives

I don't think so. They wouldn't generate anywhere near the revenue

The negative I see is the cost and how that money could be better spent on coaching, coaches, coaching coaches or a combined colleges team?

Do you know Doylerwex where the Dublin Wexford match is scheduled for? I heard tell of a double header with the Dublin footballers but don't know if it is correct and do not know if it is confirmed either way. If it is in Parnell, I think we will win. If it is in Croke Park, I think Wexford will have our number. So I hope we're not handing Wexford one of our big advantages, ie. getting you in to the Nell. Unfortunately our footballers only have a week between their League final and the Championship opener against Laois. I did ask the question.

It's listed as Parnell anyway. Personally I would love the trip to croker and would have more confidence there. I couldn't understand why ye did that in 23 but you still managed to get the result. Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 3461 - 20/03/2025 14:14:34 2597481 Link 0 |
It's also cheaper than spending the week in Ireland

You beat us last time on Croker

All those things are true although I do think the week in Portugal could be extremely beneficial for our senior hurling team in preperation for championship and that would have knock on benefits ie young lads wanting to play for wexford etc

I get that, but your statement has nothingness to do with revenue. If you actually break down attendance numbers, programme sales, then consider how sponsorship revenue is distributed in the back of TV appearances you could argue the hurlers are getting a raw deal with their allocation of funding. They get way more than the footballers but hurling is still supplements football. Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 3461 - 20/03/2025 14:48:31 2597492 Link 0 |
Thats interesting didnt realise that. How much roughly is the week in Portugal costing between flights , Hotel , food , rental of pitches & gym etc must be between 30k maybe more?

They don't get way more than the footballers from the Board. The footballers get the same kit, meals etc as far as I know. As regards success it was only 15 years ago our footballers were more successful than our hurlers, and pre WW2 we were considered a Football first county. You're like a dog with a bone when it comes to this combined colleges thing! I thought we had established that it was difficult to pull off from a logistical standpoint and besides, there's a somewhat realistic chance that there could be three Wexford schools hurling in 'A', think FCJ might be in Senior A in a year or two as well? The fundraiser last weekend went along way to paying for the trip. I'd say it wouldn't be costing much more than going to Laois did last year tbh.

Should be. They won the Junior PP B final comfortably this year, by around 20 points.
