1966 was a great year for English football. The King Eric Cantona was born in that year.

Top scorer. Ronaldo.

Using this tournament to relaunch his career for those who missed out one his first, abely assisted by Pepe.

Can't see England doing it. Southgate is suffering from the same dilemma Eriksen did back in his time in charge. Namely that he doesn't seem to have the bottle to drop one of the star names in order to redress the imbalance in his team.

What was painfully obvious last night was that Foden and Bellingham can't play in the same team. Both want to be the main man playing centrally off the striker. Bellingham would appear to be undroppable, so Southgate shunted Foden out to the left where he was totally ineffectual. He'd be far better off playing Anthony Gordon in the left-forward position. He had a great season for his club and has a bit of bite and conviction about him. Foden is a better footballer than him, but to get the best of him he has to be played centrally.

Does Harry Kane really and truly cut the mustard when it comes to the biggest games? I heard Kevin Doyle's stat about his goal scoring record in semi-finals and finals, and it isn't great to say the least.

They also have big question marks at left-back at central defence. Guehi and Trippier did a job last night, but again you'd wonder about them against better opposition.

Trent is another conundrum. He's not good enough defensively to play right-back against the best teams, but I'm not so sure this experiment playing him in midfield is going so well either. He has a lovely passing range and brilliant technique from a dead ball. But where is the best position to play him in? Although untested internatioanlly yet, I'd nearly go with Wharton beside Rice to see if he'd sink or swim.

What a hit by Stanciu!

I've a soft spot for Romania. World Cup 94 was the first World Cup I really got mad into as a young fella. Romania had a great team back then with the likes of Hagi, Popescu, Raducioiu & Dumitrescu. Good to see them back performing well at a big tournament.

The ol Lampard Gerard conundrum. Some of those midfield selections haunted England managers.

They got the job done despite not looking impressive. Thought their defence did well and the inexperienced Guehi did well. Will be interested to see if Foden and Alexander Arnold start when they get to knockout games. Serbia look like they could be their biggest test in the group.

Yeah that's true. There are no medals handed out in the group stage. Like they probably will improve and make a semi final or even the final. But I just wouldn't trust them to get it right in the really big moments.

I'll be interested to see how Portugal go tonight. They were very impressive against an admittedly poor Ireland recently. Ronaldo is their conundrum. The man is a goal machine, but contributes little in general play. I've tipped them to win it but I'm not super confident on them doing so.

If Matinez has the bottle to drop Ronaldo from the starting 11, and use him off the bench, then Portugal have an excellent chance imo.

However I don't think he has, and they'll struggle with 10 men without the ball against the better nations.

De Dutch have as much chance of winning the Euros as Kilkenny have winning the All Ireland!

I'd drop Martinez before I'd drop Ronaldo Mes! Who in that Portugal team will score match winners in big games? We'll see how he goes but he's 39, still hates losing and wants to win more trophies. Tell the rest of them to work harder without the ball and let Christy score the goals.

Ah yeah, Martinez is a bit of a bluffer.

Don't get me wrong. I'd be playing Ronaldo in every game. Just not from the start.

He's more likely to get those goals against the big teams if he's fresh. Particularly in a knock out tournament with ET etc.
