'Ah come on CC...' They said 'always', which is wrong. England won the World Cup in 1966, one of only 8 countries to win the tournament. What annoys me more about the comment is the term 'bottlers', not so much to do with England, but generally, when said about a team or person in sport that fails to win something. It's an ignorant and dumb comment. By the way, I'm not an England fan, but I enjoy the craic in a pub in London with English friends when these Euro/World Cup tournaments occur. Context is key here CC, most people weren't alive the last time England won a trophy so I think a life time of England failing to win a major tournament is sufficient enough time to use the phrase 'always' in this instance. As for the term 'bottlers' I don't see a problem in using it when it involves a team with superior talent to most or all of their opponents and they fail to meet expectations. As a Leeds fan I'll concede that the team bottled it in the season just past. Superior talent to 90% of teams in the league and lost promotion by losing to teams they were heavy favourites to beat and then didn't show up in a playoff final against a Southampton side that didn't look much better. I'm not sure what else you'd call it if you watched those non performances. But it doesn't mean they can't learn from it and earn a better description next time round. You say it's 'dumb' and 'ignorant' but what would you call a team that fails to live up to it's potential? "Well done lads, keep it up"?

France, I think. Strength in depth and a manager that's been there before. M'Bappe maybe too good for the rest individually as well. A boring shout I know, but it's hard to look past them.

They have no chance after leaving Courtois probably the the best goalkeeper in the world out of their Euro 2024 squad

Traditionally I would go for Italy (seven sisters of Italian football and all that) but this time I am going for Portugal!! katser (Galway) - Posts: 2475 - 15/06/2024 20:09:03 2551687 Link 0 |
No they're not! They're a rock band and you've omitted the definite article! Onion_Sack (Dublin) - Posts: 256 - 15/06/2024 20:59:11 2551708 Link 0 |

M'bappe not in great form though. If he hits it they'll look good to win. But a big gap in class between M'bappe and his teammates, who too often look 1happy for him to get them through. I'll go with Portugal. GreenandRed (Mayo) - Posts: 7651 - 16/06/2024 14:44:36 2551865 Link 0 |

M'Bappe usually shows up for France and after coming so close to back to back world cup victories they have to be amongst the top heavy favourites only 18 months later, for me. Portugal have a chance for sure but I don't rate their manager, a bit like Southgate, when the chips are down or the game is in the melting pot do they have the know how from the sideline to out think the likes of Deschamps, Nagelsman or even Spalletti in certain key moments? I'm not sure. SaffronDon (Antrim) - Posts: 2501 - 16/06/2024 16:35:42 2551916 Link 0 |
The Euros will be won by a "Preliminary QF Rd winner", which means the format is inferior to the one run for Sam. omahant (USA) - Posts: 2889 - 16/06/2024 16:57:46 2551941 Link 0 |
I think Portugal will win. Everyone saying France, a lo for England and even Germany or Spain, but Portugal have class in every position. Ronaldo will hopefully have an iconic send off for his last ever Euros. gaa.88 (Kerry) - Posts: 2 - 16/06/2024 23:35:32 2552096 Link 0 |
I think Portugal play better without Ronaldo these days, against the better teams. While he's undoubtedly still a great goalscorer, he's a passenger when the team is out of possession. Against the top teams, this is a big problem. They have serious talent and have played some lovely stuff over the last few years when Ronaldo hasn't been in the team.
