Kinda says everything that you don't even know that there is a different structure for football an hurling championships this year with an extra round of hurling!! Whenever I see these arguments about football holding hurling back and vice versa I tend to think that it comes from a place where people are just looking for excuses rather than the obvious solution of we as a county just need to work harder but rather than do the hard work it's easier to come up with excuses. If anything some of the football people can be worse in that respect tearintom (Wexford) - Posts: 1457 - 07/04/2024 13:14:17 2536185 Link 0 |
Did the seniors play any challenge games over the weekend ? Afinestick96 (Wexford) - Posts: 455 - 07/04/2024 13:27:50 2536187 Link 0 |
Maybe decide at certain stage in hurling say at age 16 That only the best 80 hurlers should be picked out of clubs thars 80 every year and tell them no football create new teams r . Get all the real hurling men to mentor them and at adullt have 8 teams in total not clubs or amalgzmtions of clubs only . Play hurling all the time surely that would improve the standard and our county team could improve. Let everyone else play football or junior hurling . How many of the 80 wiuld actually do it ? Ballyhale have football teams at various age levels up to minor. Although they no longer compete at senior level, they won 3 Kilkenny senior football championships in the late 1970's/ early 80's.

Thanks tear in tom "its says everything does it? That is a miniscule difference and one that wasnt worth pointing out. I'm talking about radical change to the structure- knockout football or something like that. Please don't patronise my arguments , I won't be patronising yours. You thnk the current approach is working and I don't so we will agree the differ, saying that the county just needs to work harder is unfair on the huge work being done, it's work that's not being targeted enough in my opinion. No not in the slightest ,I read somewhere that Laois actually won the all Ireland minor football that year and only bet Kilkenny by a point, and there were a few other serial all Ireland hurling winners on that team aswell. So they obviously did all put time into football at some stage to develop their skills of the game. But it didn't stop them from winning Liam McCarthys did it

Kilkenny play their football championship straight knockout.

I think we will all differ in our opinion and arguments can be made for both codes being prioritised equally or more in favour of one or the other. Formertownie (Wexford) - Posts: 342 - 07/04/2024 16:46:02 2536218 Link 0 |

Yes. Hopefully we will beat them for a change. Think we have only beaten them once in Championship in over 15 years.

Apparently we lost to Waterford by 6 points in challenge game yesterday. Only told this second hand but all players played minimum 30 mins including Rory o Connor. I have no clue of team or who played well. Wexfordgaa (Wexford) - Posts: 348 - 08/04/2024 08:59:33 2536450 Link 0 |
Was talking to a couple of parents yesterday in the park with chaps on the u20 panel saying that they are sweating on the fitness of a few players for the match against Laois. tearintom (Wexford) - Posts: 1457 - 08/04/2024 09:09:58 2536454 Link 0 |
Just on your point re. "the start of changes to prioritise hurling" - what I actually expect to happen next year is for the Football Development Committee to bring the same motion for the football championships as the Hurling Committee brought for the hurling championships this year. And then we'll be back to the championships operating the same way in both.

Laois will be up for this game. Some of the lads who missed the Kilkenny game mightnt be back yet I was told they likely wouldn't make it back til the knockout stages. Were you told there are new injuries?

At least one of the players that started the last day is definitely out for the Laois game.

Happened to be in Abbotstown on Saturday and watched a bit of a Dublin v Limerick challenge. It was a savage game with plenty of big hits. Dublin were very impressive and won by a couple of points. Limerick were close to full strength too. wexfordwin (Wexford) - Posts: 188 - 08/04/2024 11:00:57 2536505 Link 0 |
Possibly but I m just getting more cynical over the years . There's no easy answer to the dual question . But there is certainly anti one or rhe other from both codes. just feel the hurling first get more of a platform. Whether thats a numbers issue or lack of interaction by the other is a different question there would nt be any chance the football first would have got the structure change first. We l gave to wait and see about my point . Would mean another weekend to be found for championship in an already cramped schedule. Glad to see footballers improving under John building a decent squad . The expectations are nt as high but all u could ask is they fulfil the potential of ye team . . Where as we expect more from hurlers and possibly rightly so Keith certainly seems to gave brought stability and belief whilst introducing new players. Let's hope it continues into championship. Good year eould be for footballers promotin is gone . Good performance v Louth and extended run in tailteam Cup For hurlers staying in div 1 was huge . Alas last performance v Cork ended the momentum hopefully momentarily. Maybe a good thing to lessen expectations Top 3 finish hopefully resulting in leinster final . Qualify for a 1/4 final minimum and see how we go as long as we compete well we will have made progress in both codes . If we don't finish top 3 I still think Keith is the best man to bring us forward at present. Formertownie (Wexford) - Posts: 342 - 08/04/2024 11:02:30 2536506 Link 0 |
