A sickener to lose that one. Mellows had the edge physically and in the running game, and were defensive solid for the most part, but their stickwork let them down when it mattered most. Absolutely incredible guts in that team though and it was a once-in-a-lifetime year. beano (Wexford) - Posts: 1460 - 08/12/2024 16:44:31 2582787 Link 0 |
Big rebuild next year, oisin foley, hanlon, D O Keefe, P Foley, liam og(apparently)all gone and big doubt over Liam Ryan involvement now as well. We will be under savage pressure next year

Dee and the 2 Foleys didn't play this year. Never mind next year. Hopefully Ryan will be fit for Championship. I got told Matthew will be back, not sure about Mogie. But even if they are not, we will have lads step up this year.

I suppose we didn't have Oisin & Paudie Foley this year anyway and Dee, Liam Og & Matthew while unbelievable servants to Wexford are all 33 years old now. Jippo not involved would worry me big time, he is is a huge huge presence in our defence and we don't have a like for like replacement for him. 2025 is a big year for Keith and this Wexford team, there is no stand out team in Leinster anymore, an opportunity to make a Leinster final is definitely achievable. Thats a lot of experience to lose in one year. Jippo would be a huge loss . Dissapointing if Oisin Foley is out too think he would be a huge asset to our forward line. Paudie hasnt played for a few years now. Liam Og , Dee and Matt have been magnificent servants.

Two goalkeepers are gone also, Duggan and Lawlor, from what I've heard and Andrew Kennedy has been called up. If Jippo is still carrying injuries next year then I think management need to look externally for a full back…Eoin Whelan would be my shout but throwing someone in their first year of senior inter county at full back is a big call. From what I saw of CB in the championship, the two Foleys would easily get in to the starting 15.

They would from what I saw also. But if they don't want to there's no point thinking about them. Can't blame the 2 lads for leaving the panel if they did, they didn't get much of a run last year. Kennedy looked very solid any time I saw him the last few years. Viking66 (Wexford) - Posts: 14123 - 11/12/2024 09:25:09 2583075 Link 0 |
They didn't leave. They were surplus to requirements and are pretty upset about it. It's an odd call for me. I'd say Dugan was the standout of the three last year with Lawlor a close second. Hearing mixed things about paudie Foley. Apparently he's on a new program with some lad in curracloe who works with the Olympic sprinters but we'll just have to wait and see what the panel looks like come January. I'd expect if Matt and Mogie were going they'd have said something by now so maybe they're sticking around. Regardless we need to use the full panel in the league and try to bring the fringe lads on a bit for the beginning of the championship. Jippo is potentially the biggest loss but haven't heard a word about him. Hopefully he'll be around in late spring. Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 3223 - 11/12/2024 10:33:41 2583088 Link 0 |
Hopefully those lads stay on and we gain the two Foleys this year . Having them would be a huge boost

I'd be hoping Liam doesn't pull on a Wexford jersey until at least March. Hopefully break the injury cycle he's in.

If that's true and both keepers were deemed surplus to requirements it's a shocking call. As you said both of them performed well, albeit neither went far in the championship. I thought Lawlor especially was hard done by Rossiter this season but I'm not privy to how they were training and attitude etc. Personally, I'm sick listening about P Foley tbh, not been around for a while now so he shouldn't even enter the conversation if we're building a squad for the future. I'm sure others have a different take on it. YellowShadeOfPurple (Wexford) - Posts: 29 - 11/12/2024 16:22:31 2583153 Link 0 |
As I saw Cork in the semi All-Ireland final I said "Dublin ran them close but don't have a gear at this level". We could have beaten them but Limerick would have swatted us aside like a fly. ExiledInWex (Dublin) - Posts: 1264 - 11/12/2024 21:29:05 2583205 Link 0 |
Another Wexford team getting some very harsh treatment from officials today. We need to be making a far bigger deal of this as a county. Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 3223 - 14/12/2024 14:04:41 2583514 Link 0 |
Impossible to win a match when you have one of your better players sent off after 3 seconds. It gave the Galway forwards acres of space as AJ couldn't play his usual role as effectively. Pity about the sending off as it ruined what would of been a great match. Past hurler (None) - Posts: 835 - 14/12/2024 16:45:38 2583523 Link 0 |
What is it with refs and Wexford teams? I used to think it was because of Davy when he was manager but it's getting worse if anything…Jack O'Connor red against Offaly in the league, Rory red against Clare in Thurles, Kilkenny pen in Nowlan park when clearly outside the box. And then yesterday!

Whatever about the first two you mention, just to point out that in inter-county hurling, the foul doesn't have to be inside the large paralellogram for it to be a penalty. A penalty is to be awarded if you deny an opponent a goal-scoring opportunity by tripping, dragging, or pulling him, or by using your hurl "in a careless manner", anywhere inside the 20m line (but not within 25m of either sideline), or anywhere within the semi-circular arc. As I've pointed out before, when you consider that the arc has a 13m radius, a penalty could actually properly be awarded for a foul that's a full 33 metres from goal. I don't know to be honest but as far as I can see we've gotten absolutely no 50/50 or marginal calls in any high profile for for about 5 years. We'd probably have an all Ireland won if it wasn't for that rule that it's ok to constantly foul Conor McDonald every time the ball comes within 20 yards of him Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 3223 - 15/12/2024 12:41:59 2583600 Link 0 |
Would have won an All Ireland? Seriously? Leinster maybe but an All Ireland is delusional especially in the last number of years. Your conditioning (bar Chin) is way of Limerick etc. for a start. Tell me this - was it the refs fault when Antrim beat you this year? peiledoir20 (Donegal) - Posts: 1066 - 15/12/2024 13:48:14 2583605 Link 1 |
No- but it was when KK beat Wex and got them into a Leinster Final and Wexford not.

Which is more likely? A conspiracy against Wexford in refereeing circles? Or a discipline problem in Wexford hurling?
