Downs a poorer team compared 2 years ago.
Lucky to beat Athlone and Kinnegad two poor teams.
Wont get in asses roar of Lomans

Hearing today that there was a bit of controversy in ballynacarrigy yesterday in the junior 2 match between delvin and garrycastle. Everybody in the park and the scoreboard had a draw game but the ref announced delvin won by a point. Anybody know anything more of this?

Unfortunately I think the result of this appeal will be to the detriment of juvenile footballers in the years ahead. The second teams are entered into the lower divisions to give games to players who train just as hard as everyone else in the panel but due to the competitive nature of championships higher up the divisions might not get rewarded with as much game time as the first 15. We will probably be looking at 15-17 subs togging out next year for some of these clubs and that only leads to one thing at these age grades, player drop out.

Also I must defend the minor board on this one, I believe they attended the hearing and tried to fight the appeal but ultimately were informed that the appeal had succeeded. It is a slap in the face for them after their efforts over the last number of years to grow player numbers. I guess the club who appealed were able to use the influence of their members on the county board to get the game they lost fairly and squarely replayed. Don't get me wrong if a club plays a named player in their second team they should be punished, as happened to a rather large club last year, but this is not the case here. Its not very sporting and I know many of the members of the appealing club are unhappy with the unsporting nature of the appeal.

Anyway, not much can be done about it at this stage. I agree with the previous poster "Ludicrous stuff" is appropriate."
Did you say the county board attended an appeal and tried to "fight it"? Fight an appeal where they broke the rules.... and as indicated in other comments they were made aware of this situation before hand and still continued with the rule breaking??? ... now that's very concerning happenings.... the most important thing here is the integrity of the game and this was obviously compromised greatly in this case....
Will sanctions be imposed on the perpetrators?"
I believe the Minor Board fought to defend their approach at the appeal hearing and outlined the consequences of postponements, rescheduling of games and changes to fixtures which we are now faced with. We may now be looking at games running to early to late December for a number of age grades. Who do you see as the perpetrators here? No team has played any players from the named 15 on their second team. I don't know whether or not the minor board were aware of the situation beforehand as mentioned above, so can't vouch for that info but the fact that a club appealed on these grounds in the first instance is ludicrous in my opinion."]The only perpetrator in this case is the party that broke the rule. And that's The Minor Board. That's not my opinion, that's a fact.
If a club broke the rules both chair and secretary would be hit with a ban... whether it was an oversight or not. If they knowingly done it, then they're positions are also untenable, and it's as simple as that.
We all have an opinion on this... but the rules are the rules and consequences are the consequences. You have to be accountable for your decisions and actions, especially if you are in these positions of authority.
If a rule is passed for next years championship that all players must wear pink boots with yellow dots, then they must all wear them whether you me or anyone else likes it or not. As I said.... rules are rules and abiding by them is what keeps us all in line!!! It's the same in every walk of life, not just sport."]"If a rule is passed for next years championship that all players must wear pink boots with yellow dots, then they must all wear them whether you me or anyone else likes it or not"

If this stipulation did exist for next years championship, I would be absolutely mortified if someone from my club affected all underage championships by lodging an appeal in September calling for replays and stretching out of games until December because everyone failed to wear pink boots with yellow spots. Anything the club achieved after that would be somewhat tainted by this behaviour. But I guess we're all different and I wouldn't expect everyone to have the same view on sportsmanship as I have.

Also, you mention that the Minor boards positions are untenable. Give us a break.........

That's a lot of poor teams in the knockout stages of a championship. You must enjoy going to the matches!

Heard the same team, even the Delvin bench had a draw but will Garrycastle bother appealing ?

I was at four different games in Rochfortbridge this year, in each game there was at least 1 point waved wide or a wide waved as a point, in my opinion the goalposts are not high enough.

As I have stated before Lar Wall has not been contacted by the county board regarding the Westmeath Manager job!

They are looking at other options

Lomans win by 12 which defintely flattered them as they were fairly casual in the second half. However Tyrrellspass were very disappointing kicked terrible wides and in the first half hit long balls in to no avail. Lost their discipline in the end as well. Downs and Lomans will be a good final

I don't get the hatred towards St Lomans on this …. They have just reached their 10th county final in a row and lads will tell you there not all that and their blown up …. That's a fair achievement for any team and we have an exciting final awaiting us…why can't we ever just give teams credit regardless of what club we are we'd all love if our club achieved half of what st lomans have yet here we are having lads tell us their not all that and they are blown up …. Fair dues to keep coming back year after year reaching finals and I for one would love my club to be able to reach those standards

Can't say I think that it's hatred towards Lomans but it's I guess, dismissive of Lomans on this forum because they are constantly achieving these things and it might be taken for granted. Was at the game this evening, Lomans just too strong everywhere, their starters too strong, their bench too strong. Teams just can't compete. It's a formidable task for any team. Tyrellspass never turned up, and maybe it's a case of, as usual, when a team plays Lomans they don't turn up because the opposition is just leagues and leagues ahead. Danny McCartan MOTM, he was outstanding. Great final ahead but I'm afraid we might be saying the same thing in two weeks time… the Downs just didn't turn up.

If a club broke rules after being told not to.... would you expect sanctions on their officers??? Think about that.
I think your mixing up romantic notions of "the CB being a sound bunch of lads doing their best" (which I'm not saying they aren't, it's definitely a thankless job) with rules.
Why can I ask you, did all games up to this incident (and you can go back to the start of the league last march) involving 2 x teams from clubs in the same age groups, take place on the same evening, same time... seamlessly without anyone complaining (even during the holiday periods).... then when it comes to knockout (when schools are back and everyone should have the numbers they decleared last February).... just one clubs games get staggered by 24hrs.... it stuck out like a sore thumb on the fixtures list...
Figure this one out.... why would the CB knowingly go against a rule and stagger 2 x games for just one club.... must be something we're not thinking of????
Surely if they thought the pressure was on and they needed to do something... could they not have called an emergency meeting and passed an ammendment to the rules properly with everyone's agreement?
.... and to sign off as you did.....Give us a break!!!!!!!

To be fair; they weren't expected to win and getting to the semi final can be viewed as a successful season.

Should be a good county final in the Downes can perform for the full match.

Surely a county manager will be appointed in advance of the county final..

I don't think there is a whole lot between the downs and plans and it could either way like it proved in 2022 but I see posters constantly jumping at a chance to slate st lomans …. Their 2nd team were beaten yday and people took a pop I think the bigger picture is when st lomans 2nd team are competing with sole clubs in this county it's not saying a whole lot for Westmeath going forward …. There a massive club town team great numbers but that's all well and good you have to produce and they are let's give them credit instead of slating them … 10 county finals in a row is no mean achievement but personally I wouldn't like to call them and the downs I think the downs are a brilliant footballing side when at their best nd it could go either way I for one really look forward to it

Easy enough win for Lomans. Tpass were very poor and were probably overhyped after beating an average Shamrocks side. Good wins for the Downs and it'll be a good final. Loughlin will have to be tightly marked. However, Lomans have so many good forwards. I'd say they'll win the final by 3/4 points.

Intermediate semis seemed easy enough. Good wins for Milltown and Garrycastle. Garrycastle will want to go straight back up after relegation last year. Dolan and Monaghan are flying for them.

Junior has been a brilliant championship. Great win for Josephs today. McDonnell is a brilliant footballer. Bun are very good and experienced. However, are lacking some underage through. Good win for Finea too with McCormack and Cunningham influential. Lomans probably were a it overhyped with a lot of youngsters. They are all probably junior footballers bar Sean Kelly and Conor Regan, who would probably start for each senior team in the county. They both could see senior minutes in the final. If i was a betting man, I would say Finea by 2/3 points due to their Intermediate experience.

Many brilliant finals in store!
