Replying To dickie10:  "are there many clubs in louth that dont have names and go by just their town/ village or townland or is it because of lots of amalgamations? like in meath most clubs are just Kilmessan, Nobber , Trim etc with no rovers, rangers etc on to them. any reason for this? like why do cloughhead not just call themselves cloughhead? why dreadnoughts?"
The Dreadnots is one of the oldest clubs in Louth and was set up in 1887 by a group of fishermen with the mentality "We Dread Nothing". The name is often confused with the British Battleship, The Dreadnot but has nothing to do with it. In 1889 they reached the Senior Championship final but lost to the Blues. It would take them 123 years to reach another Senior final (A record for the longest gap for senior finals to reach for one club) when they reached the final in 2012 and again in 2014 but lost both finals to Paddy Keenans great Pats team.

Other clubs in Louth named after places:
Dundalk Young Irelanders: Dundalk
Newtown Blues: Newtownstalaban (It was founded in Morgans pub in 1887)
Lannleire: This is the old name for Dunleer

Mattock Rangers are based in Collon and is named after the river Mattock that flows through the village. This is a tribute of the Boyne and is also the border between Louth and Meath. Glyde Rangers are also named after a river, The Glyde and their home grounds is in Tallanstown.

Replying To Ollie2:  "At long last the Championship is starting this coming weekend. Can the Marys make history and win the Senior Championship for three years in a row for the first time ever? Here's my predictions for the Championship over the three grades:

Senior!
Winners: Mary's
Biggest Challenger: Jocks
Outsider: Mochs
Relegated: Brides

Inter!
Winners: Hunterstown
Biggest Challenger: Kilkerley
Outsider: D.Y.I
Relegated: Glyde

Junior!
Winners: Plunketts
Biggest Challenger: Connells
Outsider: Mitchell's"
The first Championship final on this weekend. I tipped Hunterstown from the start so Ill be sticking with them on Sunday. The Plunkett's let me down but The Connells and Mitchells are still in the Junior Championship and could meet in the final. I also tipped the Brides and Glyde to get relegated and both came up.

You would imagine Craig Lennon would be called up?

I think you mean " both came down" . Ha ha.

My predictions - Mochs , Kilkerley and O.Ps.- all went by the wayside. I'll now go for Jocks , Hunterstown and O'Connells. And of course Pats for the minor. It will be a great battle with Cooley.

I like your thinking haha. Pats and Cooley senior teams had some battles in the 2000s. It's hard to believe that Cooley have not won Joe Ward since 1990.

In 2028 I will have a toast to Kildare winning the first Sam Maguire and their last All Ireland. I hope you do the same in 2057 to the mighty Louth.

Intermediate final replay should be played in Dundalk given hunterstown basically had a home fixture yesterday.

They originally said it was in Ardee at 3.30 Saturday

Today they said it's been refixed for Darver at 6 on Saturday

How in the name of God is a championship final on in Darver. Not one seat for anyone unable to stand for and hour and a half
If the weather is bad, the grass banks will be a death trap

Crazy stuff, surely Castlebellingham
, Knockbridge even Dromiskin could host the game

Given it was practically a home tie for hunterstown in the first game surely the clans was the place for the game. It will be a nightmare trying to get in and out of darver and then as you say if the weather is bad it will be the same. No consideration for players families or the older supporter. An absolute disgrace

Pretty sure their is a ladies game in the Clans on Saturday which rules it out

I can't understand how with numerous decent grounds between Ardee and Dundalk, they pick Darver

Wonder what the reason for even moving it from Ardee in the first place as they originally said it was to be played their

I would say the Gaels wouldn't give home advantage again. I think the girls game in the clans is on Friday night. Darver hasn't the facilities nor access to host a final. Seems to be a south Louth bias all round

Some crazy venue decisions this year. Certainly Darver is not suitable for an Intermediate final particularly in mid October
Last Saturday week one minor semi final was played in Dowdallshill at 3.30 pm and the other one a mile away in the Clans at 5.30pm. Sensible people would have played both games at the same venue for the benefit and convenience oof our paying supporters .

And the showpiece next week. Where do we park.?

It will be like the animals heading into the ark. 2 cars by 2. Also the pats v blues senior final played in drogheda and went to replay was then fixed for drogheda again and the pats refused and it was remixed for dowdalshill.

Ìn 2019 the Blues and Dreads senior semi-final was fixed for the Raghs. Clogherhead objected to this and the match was fixed for Castlebellingham.

Oh god, whatever is done I wouldn't interfere with the Ladies side of things. That is currently heading for the mother of all messes in Louth.

They seem sure this game is going ahead in Darver anyway on Saturday.

For all the good things the county board have done over last few years, some of the fixture decisions (not having the league finished before the champ starts for one, we had promotion relegation games played the following season just a year back) and now this intermediate final in a pitch with not even a seat for fans, never mind a stand with cover
