Great weekend for carlow. They have done the county proud. I must admit I was sceptical of the footballers chances but glad to be proved wrong! Hurlers were excellent again yesterday regardless of the offaly team sent out. Well done to both teams. Ceatharlach Abu! Unusedsub (Carlow) - Posts: 87 - 14/05/2023 18:06:26 2478414 Link 1 |

Offaly and ourselves I'd say are the two genuine dual counties that squeeze more out of relatively small populations that any others in the country.

Thanks for that. Can I add I'd love to see Galway winning Sam and Shane Walsh being MOTM just like he was last July.

Yeah and laois (thru gritted teeth) in fairness. Both have much larger geographical areas than us tho as well as larger populations.

When discussing Leix's historical superiority in the rivalry with Carlow, people tend to omit the fact that they have a much larger population than Carlow. It's 50-60% bigger (and for GAA purposes higher again, due to the Graiguecullen issue). Also, both rugby and soccer are much stronger in Carlow than in Leix. They don't even have a soccer league, what clubs they have play in Carlow (except for one team in the Dublin league). Also, there has never been a senior rugby club in Leix, and in the last 30 years Carlow sides have won seven Town's Cup and Laois only one. Carlow really punches above its weight (across a lot of codes), for the third smallest population in Ireland. However, I think pound-for-pound you'd have to admit Offaly is the strongest GAA county. All Ireland's in both football and hurling, over the past 50 years. I also think they are the only county with fewer than 100,000 people to have a football All Ireland during that time frame (open to correction there) CARPS (Carlow) - Posts: 686 - 15/05/2023 10:16:25 2478588 Link 0 |

It didn't surprise me that we finished strong yesterday or that that throughout the game our lads seemed to have more in their legs than Wicklow, definitely we had way more genuine pace. It might seem a small thing but when I got there yesterday I was pleasantly surprised to see they had cut the grass quite short in Aughrim (shorter than I ever saw it there) and with good reason as underfoot the pitch was firm. Definitely suited our guys and was very different to the Leinster game last month when the pitch was heavier and the grass I'd say a good inch id not two longer which wouldn't and didn't suit Carlow's runners. I think we're definitely a dry ball top of the ground team so conditions suited us yesterday. Onion Breath (Carlow) - Posts: 1418 - 15/05/2023 16:10:29 2478738 Link 0 |

Very poor today, a poor gameplan poorly executed, limerick figured us out and played with width in the second half and tore us to pieces. Aside from a 10 minute spell in the first half before half time we were miles behind them in every aspect. Looks like wicklow will lose all 3 so I'm assuming we will make the preliminary quarters but we are nowhere near where we need to be Barrowsider (Carlow) - Posts: 1637 - 20/05/2023 17:48:31 2479790 Link 0 |
Spot on. I'll cut them some slack in that they were probably tired after aughrim and the 6 day turnaround and the ref was very lenient with some of Limerick s tackling in the 1st half which was downright dangerous. 2 points that stuck out like a sore thumb to me. 1.why did we Concede every kick out to Limerick and allow them to build from the back quickly. 2. Why did we insist going long with our own kick out when we were being cleaned out practically every time. It's very frustrating to watch lads bursting themselves yet getting very bad advise from the sideline. God knows there's enough of them there to come up with something better than yesterday's shambles. Overthebar53 (Carlow) - Posts: 250 - 21/05/2023 10:18:47 2479901 Link 0 |
I also noticed we are trying to defend everywhere which leaves huge gaps, I don't know why we would be defending out on the sidelines 60 mtrs from goal

@Barrowsider maybe stick to the minors, interesting no comment on the wicklow game or well done maybe because you were not there.Typical negativity the minute Carlow lose.
