Thanks, wasn't sure on the rule I was worried when the foul happened and was sure he'd see black. I agree Kildare kicked plenty wides, just meant that if I was a Kildare fan I'd be pretty annoyed at the ref as well.

For your information there's a big. Difference between a keyboard warrior and a poster who posts about Donegal gaa affairs. I dont go about constantly putting down good gaa people at every opportunity. Few posters on here slating Bonner on every post. Multiple accounts I may add. Probably the same people who abused him on Facebook last week. Cowards

To be honest I think we have gone back from last year . We are way to slow attacking when we win the ball in our half etc and the defending team have all the time in the world to set up their defence . Its really frustrating to watch..... letterkennyGuy (Donegal) - Posts: 178 - 07/02/2022 15:50:30 2398999 Link 0 |

Hi papa_pump: Thanks for reply. It's probably a combination of everything you've alluded to. Just makes the task that much harder.

With about half the team injured it really brings the squad into play. I noted Joel bradley-Walsh was on the bench. I didn't even know he was on the panel. He looked very dangerous at FF against ul for lyit and caused a load of damage. Took his two goals from play well and looked like a man who wasn't going to miss the penalty. I know he hasn't played much Gaelic for a few years. It will be interesting to see can he progress in training with the seniors. The fact that in the second half we were short Neil McGee,Daire O'Baoill,Hugh McFadden,Jason McGee,Kieran Thompson,Michael Murphy,Niall O''Donnell,Jamie Brennan and Oisin Gallen and still able to compete shows that we have a reasonably strong panel. Most of those players would be starters if fit.We would be very short of inside forwards if Murphy,Brennan and Gallen were all missing at the same time and at midfield if Thompson McGee and McFadden were missing. To lose all those players is a big hit.If all the afforementioned were available along with the new guys like Conor O'Donnell,Shane O'Donnell,Mark Curran etc we would have a good strong panel and give the manager some headaches in picking 15 All going well I would be reasonably positive. But in the meantime we will have to struggle on with what we have and get 2 more victories from the last 5 matches to secure our div 1 status. gunman (Donegal) - Posts: 1179 - 07/02/2022 21:10:13 2399170 Link 1 |
I find the back 6 hard to know. I'm not sure mccleneghan has done enough yet to warrant starting, come championship. And neil mcgee still wants to give it a crack to get back. And you also can't ignore that they could bring someone back from further up the field. From midfield up and assuming all players are fit it is a pick from mcfadden, mcgonagle, jason mcgee, Thompson, Niall O'donnell, langan, conor o'donnell, Ryan mchugh, patrick mcbrearty, Jamie brennan, mogan (tracking back), Michael murphy and oisin farrah. It looks like they want to keep mchugh up the field and think mogan will track back but be named as a forward. I wonder could conor o'donnell be asked to come back a little. I think he moved on to Archbold (kildare 7) and kept him quiet after a very good start. I think he has also played from the defence at underage a little. He would also add a scoring threat. I also wouldn't rule out shane o'donnell from the half back line either. And as much as you might like the odd score from the back I'd happily take our defenders not scoring if they keep the opposition quiet. I think with the back 6 it's a bit different than other areas of the field in that management will use a horses for courses approach on a game by game basis. I don't think there should be a hard & fastenened "best back 6". Certain players will suit certain opposition better than others & it's a management task to identify that. Getting the match ups right is a crucial part of the modern gamne moreso than establishing a locked down starting 15. Lockjaw (Donegal) - Posts: 9870 - 08/02/2022 10:18:45 2399228 Link 0 |
This is a good back 6 but think I would go with Hugh McFadden at centre half back. He is good at organising and does all that defensive work anyway. McFadden-Ferry, McCole, McMenamin Ban, Hugh McFadden, Ward I like McClenaghan but he probably hasn't done enough for a starting position. Daire O'Baoil is another man I'd love to see have a run in the team. Green_Gold (Donegal) - Posts: 1916 - 08/02/2022 10:44:30 2399241 Link 0 |
I like daire o baoill but from watching him he needs to work on his defensive game.. Armagh have gone with jarly og burns as a wing back this year. Maybe we could look at placing a big athletic ball winner there too. Be an extra option on Patton kick outs. But who would you play there. See Bradley walsh on squad squad last week will he get game time in Killarney. Don't know anything about him but he's supposed to be a ball winner be great if he could offer something. rorysboys (Donegal) - Posts: 2643 - 08/02/2022 11:21:16 2399264 Link 0 |
Alright lads is Kieran Gillespie definitely gone.. I follow him on Instagram and he's in some shape Such a massive pity. And has anyone heard anything about Conor Morrison? Two players that would add serious steel if they were fit and available? RoryGall35 (Donegal) - Posts: 193 - 08/02/2022 11:44:56 2399273 Link 0 |
Even from that 2014 minor team, Gillespie was marked as the natural successor to his club mate McGee. Doesn't look like that is going to happen for the poor fella now. Hope Morrison will be back soon. To be fair to him he used his year off wisely managing Eunans reserve team to a championship. Great sign of a young fella that and seems like a proper clubman. We have plenty lovely footballers in Donegal, what we need is a few more 'dogs of war' when we find ourselves in the trenches, particularly in our full back line. People laud the likes of Ciaran Kilkenny, Dean Rock etc. when talking about the great Dublin 6 in a row team and rightly so. But let me tell you they wouldn't have won half of them without the likes of Bastick, Philly McMahon etc. Hopefully 'The Undertaker' in our backroom team can uncover a few for us. peiledoir20 (Donegal) - Posts: 1262 - 08/02/2022 12:18:28 2399285 Link 0 |
Daire O'Baoill has had his fair share of game time in recent years, he isn't consistent enough, I haven't see him really stand up and look great in a County game to date. He has direct pace, but his tackling and cover has been poor, room for improvement. I don't think Hugh McFadden is naturally a No 6, but he certainly has a level of physicality that might suit some encounters, he is definitely a valuable player. Conor Morrison was anticipated to be back around Summer 2022 if all went well with his rehab, but I haven't heard anything since, but his return to playing may not mean he is back at level required for Intercounty. Kieran Gillespie was in the Donegal squad last year I think, but don't recall him getting any game time. He was looking like a power house full back before his injuries, not sure if he can make it back to that level again, did he play for Gweedore in 2021? That might give a clue. Curran McCole McFadden-Ferry EBG Brennan Mac Ceallbhuí Lots of moving parts between now and April. Couple of Sigerson matches to play out. Could be Curran v Clifford on Thursday. If Hugh McFadden is fit then I'd be inclined to say he starts at number 6 such is the form of McGee and McGonagle. SurelyToGod (Donegal) - Posts: 472 - 08/02/2022 14:51:48 2399335 Link 0 |
Donegal have been very unfortunate with injuries to full backs in the last 8 years, Luke Keaney was looking like Eamon McGee's successor until he was forced to retire with injury. Kieran Gillespie was looking like Neil McGee's successor until he got hit with repeated injuries. Conor Morrison is a savage man marker, would have been a perfect replacement for Paddy McGrath, but he is also out long-term. Had those fella ever all managed to remain injury free, I think Donegal would have had a lot more silverware, those 3 men are dogs of war types we desire, we've just had terrible luck. Played a league game this year I think. did the knee again. I think he had his third cruciate operation. Won't be available this year. Such a pity poor lad. Hadn't much luck with injuries.

I see Kilcar have decided not to appeal the County Boards decision to fine Glenties €5,000 but let them keep the title. MuckrossHead (Donegal) - Posts: 5028 - 09/02/2022 13:19:15 2399504 Link 0 |
Another cop out by the GAA, the game should have been replayed long ago, good that it's over anyway, an absolute joke.
