While there maybe some truth in the statement (Are we saying that July seen one last sting out of the Dubs in the AI final, I doubt it even if there is very little coming through) club notes are no place for this comment. OK if it appeared in the match report by a neutral reporter then you have to respect the reporter article. Lets hope it will not come back to bite light the statement in 2004, "This is the second leg of our 5-in-a-row" We all know what happened after 2004. There could be a nasty sting in the statement above. B&G (Longford) - Posts: 362 - 20/09/2023 12:47:40 2504925 Link 0 |
Serious credit and recognition has to go to that mullinalaghta team for what they have done in the last number of years, nobody can deny them that. Would there be a debate to be had that they are the greatest Longford club side of all time? LongfordSham (Longford) - Posts: 116 - 20/09/2023 12:58:36 2504931 Link 0 |
If you know that much then you'll know who wrote the notes!

The only way it will come back to bite anyone is if Mullinalaghta come back and win another one or two championships. I don't think that is going to happen. The same happened with our great team. We got hammered in the 04 final and everyone said we were gone. We got back to the final in 05 and we thought then, that everyone had cake on their face. We lost that final too and since then, on the playing field, the club has been in a slow decline. The same will happen this Mullinalaghta team. They had a great first 15 for 10 years, but after that they had nothing to bring off the bench. They'll be senior for a few years yet and make the odd semi-final but it's going to be a slow drop off now for them. Spinx (Longford) - Posts: 1326 - 20/09/2023 13:43:45 2504938 Link 0 |
You shouldn't be surprised with comments like that from them considering what they've tried to do to the Killoe senior club and the Slashers minor club in the past.

I love how this statement from 04 has just grown legs and has changed over the years from what was actually said lol. First of all you got the year wrong as you had said 03!! Second of all what he said was that 'in the parish of Clonguish when you play football and get to senior all you hear about is the fantastic 4 in a row won by the team in the 60's. It would be great to match that or try and go one better'. There was no such comment guaranteeing that they would win another 3 in a row after that. But all you lads who have a serious chip on your shoulder with our club just have to change a few things to support your lies!!!

Just a quick one for the cloinguish folk. As we know clonguish are neighbours with the Leitrim parish of Gortletteragh. Down through the years I've gone canvassing for tickets around the parish. I've noticed when you turn left at Fox's pub coming from the direction of drumlish down towards the townlands of Tooman and Clooncumber there seems to be great confusion of where the county lines are. One house believes there in clonguish and 2-3 kilometres down the road their neighbour believes they are in Gortletteragh. I've heard plenty stories of Cloinguish and Longford greats who indeed lived in Gortletteragh, Co. Leitrim. I was just wondering is there any of this next crop of clonguish footballers who are indeed living in Gortletteragh. And could we possibly have them back. All in jest I just find this very interesting. best of luck to our neighbours in the county semi final. Leitrimforliam (Leitrim) - Posts: 325 - 20/09/2023 14:15:26 2504947 Link 0 |
What did we try to do to Killoe or Slashers? It is the end of the Mullinalaghta team, every reasonable observer of the game locally would agree with that. It coming from the club probably should not have happened but then our PRO can sometimes let the pen run away with itself! liosbreac6265 (Longford) - Posts: 254 - 20/09/2023 14:24:30 2504953 Link 0 |
Not to my knowledge are there any of the players from Gortletteragh parish. We did gain the greatest ticket seller of all from Clooncumber however!! A lot of confusion comes from part of Bornacoola parish being in Longford and we gained players from there over the years, most notably the Flynns.

We did gain Seamus Prunty from yourselves. Gortletteragh is a huge parish but unfortunately very small population wise. We've always lost players to neighbouring parish's. We all enjoyed Alex's weekly visits to the pubs of Gortletteragh and his saying "May the lord of the blueshirts look down upon you"

Would Gerry Moore fall within Gortletteragh or Clonguish? I think his father won a championship or 2 with Gortletteragh. Frank74 (Longford) - Posts: 187 - 20/09/2023 15:43:08 2504971 Link 0 |

Killoe got their "revenge" when they played out a disgraceful result against Mostrim not long after it. Embarrassing behaviour which will never be forgotten and which would have warranted more than a 48 week ban liosbreac6265 (Longford) - Posts: 254 - 20/09/2023 16:27:30 2504980 Link 0 |
I think there's a danger of conflating the behaviour of one individual - whether it be a club PRO or a county board official who comes from a particular club - with the club itself, certainly where the Killoe saga of 2020 is concerned. I don't remember a particular issue with Longford Slashers but I do remember the letter of the law being insisted on by the Clonguish club a few years ago against the Colmcille minor club where there was no reason or urgency to do so and I remember attempts being made to strong-arm the county board into putting us out of the championship in 2010. He applied for the Longford job in 2018 and was turned down by the same county board so I don't see why you'd be surprised by that.

I believe that he did win championships yes and there was always rumours that Matthew Carey was living outside the boundary. Of course Clonguish masters at drawing and erasing the parish boundaries where it suits them, as Killoe and Slashers have been known to.

Ah I think the PRO just ran away with themselves on the 'dying bee' remark - a bit too fired up after the win. No great harm in it, but was amusing to read :-). I'd say Mullinalaghta are big and bold enough (and have enough in the trophy cabinet) not to be bothered by it. I don't think anyone regards it as the settled view of Clonguish people, any more than anyone regards the comments on this forum as the view of everyone in their clubs either. That would be idiotic (not quite as idiotic as bringing the county into disrepute on the national stage and having the GAA's DRA slap you down for a ludicrous half-baked ban, but idiotic nonetheless). Yes the Carey's i'm aware of living in Gortletteragh. The boundary we share with Drumlish and Ballinamuck seems more defined.

I'll even add a few more to your list....Ballymahon, Colmcille, Dromard and even my own club. The way these things are normally settled in Longford is on where they went to national school. Every club is has these border players in their squads! Spinx (Longford) - Posts: 1326 - 21/09/2023 13:50:17 2505059 Link 0 |
