Any obvious reasons for the run of success? Population shift, different school principal, new club officials etc. Its very unusual to see that level of dominance in all age groups, most clubs have a "golden generation" that they know from early on are a cut above the norm but the depth in Clonguish is impressive. Late 80s early 90s Granard had something similar but it never translated to a Senior title.

Is it true that Clonguish fielded an overage player the other night. Could have serious prepocursions if proven

Ciaran Carey has been a massive driving influence in underage coaching, as has Derek Duggan, Jimmy Gacquin and Daniel Mimnagh was excellent in the national school to name a few but it has been a widespread club effort. It was badly needed given the famine we are currently enduring. Don't forget that only for the imbalanced structure we would have almost certainly been down to intermediate in recent years. Lots of clubs have and have had lots of great coaches and have not come near the level of underage silverware we have attained, it has been freakish and won't be sustained

Id say its a foregone conclusion Ballymahon will be relegated and within that stat you mentioned will have lost to 7 different teams in championship, all of them by an extremely high margin, anticipating the same for this weekend. Credit should be given to them for sticking with it and fielding, unlike Kilashee the previous year, but clear this year has done them no favours and the gap between senior and intermediate is not narrowing. I know they have an extremely young team and a lot of experienced players dropped off in the last two seasons and with five 18 year old's starting on their victorious Intermediate team last I would hope this year hasn't done too much damage to them. While no different to any other years recently, south Longford football is in dire straits when Carrickedmond and Ballymahon should really both be intermediate, and at that Ballymahon might even struggle at inter next year. You would hope for some structural changes to address the problems, but it wont happen. LongfordSham (Longford) - Posts: 116 - 22/09/2023 14:41:30 2505222 Link 0 |
We fielded 6 overage players last night.

Thats a very odd allegation to be throwing out there, highly unlikely its not something that goes on in Longford

Let's see how the Clonguish official gets them out of fielding an overage player. No doubt he'll have the St Michael's club up in front of solicitors again. Revo (Longford) - Posts: 13 - 23/09/2023 09:03:38 2505282 Link 1 |

I presume you're just on a wind up))) Fielding overage players was something common 40 or 50 years ago but everyone knows everyone now in a small county like Longford....... doubtful such a thing could happen now. backtoback2 (Longford) - Posts: 42 - 23/09/2023 14:39:18 2505327 Link 0 |
They need to try better!!

He just still sour over us beating them last weekend. Answer him better to go back and tell his team to try and win without bringing the dark arts into! Frank74 (Longford) - Posts: 187 - 23/09/2023 15:12:08 2505330 Link 0 |
Not at all when Clonguish have a Leinster title get back to me. We done it without a corrupt official as well.

Ok you are about as Mullinalaghta as I am. Never once have I heard any of their supporters attempt to gloat like that. Something tells me you are a bitter individual a bit closer to our border!

I think you could be right Lios Breac. He's not from Mullinalaghta as their supporters look to be all on the Longford GAA Discussion forum. I'd guess he's a Slashers man but would not count Killoe out of it either!! Anyways, looking forward to the 2 games next weekend. Hopefully the weather will improve. Well done to our Minors and Ladies teams who both won this morning and are in their respective County Finals.

I just seen the semi-finals for the Junior A Championship. Should it not be Killoe V Abbeylara and Ballymore V Legan seeing as Killoe topped the group? Are the CB hoping for an all Junior team final? It's a bit odd where its 1 v 3 and 2 V Junior B, when the Senior and intermediate went 1 v 4 and 2 V 3. Frank74 (Longford) - Posts: 187 - 25/09/2023 07:22:24 2505514 Link 0 |
They did open draw but didn't know about it until Friday we were all surprised thought it was 1 vs 4 and 2 vs 3

No surprise in the relegation final on Sunday. Credit to Ballymahon for showing up throughout even if it was a disaster of a season for them. Hopefully there is structural change made to sort out this ever-growing gap. I suspect clubs with the most vested interested in regaining or keeping senior status this year will move heaven and earth to prevent any reduction in sfc size, or will come up with some Senior B nonsense instead. Lets see. LongfordgaaAbú (Longford) - Posts: 571 - 25/09/2023 10:43:36 2505546 Link 1 |
They have put in junior b since last year but what's odd is it was open draw and not 1 vs 2 v3 we expected to play Ballymoney not kiloe but they did open draw apparently

Last year Ardagh Moydow won the B title and went into the semi final of the A Championship against Ballymore who had finished top of the group. Grattans who finished 2nd in the group then played Killoe who finished 3rd. Not clear whether there's an open draw for semis in Junior and it just happened to end up 1vB and 2v3 last year or why else this year was different to last. It would help massively if each years competition rules were published online!
